  1. A sad end to a great campaign for Walespublished at 20:52 British Summer Time 11 October 2022

    ET: Switzerland 2-1 Wales

I mean, what can I say? What do you say?

Wales had never reached the play-offs for a major finals.

    They were big underdogs tonight.

Two disallowed goals, a missed penalty and 120 minutes of drama later, I think we all started to believe it was Wales' night.

To lose in such a manner, it's pretty tough to take.

It's been a record breaking campaign for Wales, who smashed their attendance record twice, but it just wasn't quite enough.

It's another oh so near, but yet so far for Wales.

This will hurt for a long time.

Thanks for following along with us.

This team has already created history getting to this stage.

There's so many positives to take.

Yes it's going to hurt now but it's important the girls use this disappointment to fuel them and hopefully it will help to progress the team onto the next level which is qualifying for a major tournament.

The visibility of women's football in Wales - you can't underestimate the power of that.

They're role models and inspiring the next generation so we have to take that from the campaign.

Obviously our target was to qualify so we'll have that disappointment and heartbreak, but there's so much more to take.

It's My Life by Bon Jovi blares out in the stadium.

The lyrics - "This ain't a song for the broken-hearted" - feel horribly apt for Wales after that late winner for Switzerland.

Wales manager Gemma Grainger told BBC Two Wales:

"It is incredibly tough to take. We know the margins at this level are fine and that has been shown tonight.

"I am incredibly proud of this group. I am proud we competed in this game and we intend to keep doing that.

"We are disappointed right now, we know we can win these level of games, but it is fine margins.

"We have to thank our fans for their support in the campaign."

I'm devastated for the players, it's such a shame as we were seconds away from a penalty shoot-out.

To be fair Switzerland took control in the second-half.

Wales did show flashes of inspiration and good play but it wasn't enough.

I'm just gutted for the girls.

I wonder if all of Wales' players will feel they have another international campaign in them?

Have we, for example, just seen Wales' record scorer in an international shirt for the last time?

    Questions for another day.

    This is absolutely heart-breaking.

    We got so close.

But you do have to look at the bigger picture.

Wales had 15,000 on Thursday evening the development of the game has been outstanding and it's such a shame it won't be rewarded with a historic first major tournament.
