  1. 'It is their game of the year'published at 19:27 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Marseille v Tottenham (20:00 GMT)

    BBC World Service

French sports journalist Bruno Ahoyo speaking to BBC World Service's Sport Today: "Marseille will play to win. They will have 55,000 fans with them still. It is still a very horrid atmosphere. They will do all they can.

"They have the best squad available. It has been 11 years since they played in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

"They want to show they can be a great team. Everybody is saying in Marseille it is the game of the year.

"They don't want to be playing in the Europa League next season."

  2. State of play in Group Cpublished at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

Ooooh, Bayern Munich are playing Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen are at home to Barcelona.

That could be exciting... is what you think until you see the group table.

Bayern have won the group, Inter are second, Barcelona are in the Europa League and Plzen are bottom. All those positions are locked in so nothing will change no matter the scores tonight.

  3. Who needs what?published at 19:19 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Marseille v Tottenham (20:00 GMT)

The closest group by miles - all four sides know a win would put them in the knockout stage. Anyone could win the group, though Spurs know they would do so with a victory.

Spurs and Sporting, who host Eintracht Frankfurt, just need a draw in their games to go through.

If Spurs lose they will finish third and end up in the Europa League.

  4. Rangers hopes hang by threadpublished at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Rangers v Ajax (20:00 GMT)

Also in Group A tonight, we have the contest between Rangers and Ajax, neither of whom can qualify for the next round.

The Champions League uses head-to-head before goal difference. So for Rangers to finish in the Europa League place they would have to beat Ajax by five or more goals, otherwise they are out of Europe.

You can follow live coverage of that match here.

Here is what Jurgen Klopp had to say after the loss to Napoli in that opening Champions League game...

Jurgen Klopp - We have to reinvent ourselves

This has become a familiar lament from the German this season.

Luciano Spalletti's Napoli have swept aside pretty much everyone they have faced this season. In Serie A, they have won 10 and drawn two of their 12 games to top the table by five points. They've won away at Lazio, Milan and Roma.

In the Champions League they've won out of five, scoring 20 times in the process. That includes 10 over two games home and away against Ajax and four in the first game of the group - that impressive, statement battering of Jurgen Klopp's lads.

If you need reminding of that utterly one-sided encounter in Naples, you can read our report here.

These are not happy times at Liverpool.

Saturday's home loss to Leeds has further fuelled the fire of frustration that has been simmering away for much of this season. It means the Reds have now lost to two teams near the foot of the table in successive Premier League games, are ninth in the table and closer on points to the bottom three than the top four.

However, in Europe things have been going pretty well. Just the one loss from five games and qualification already secured. There is still a chance the Reds can top Group A, although it would take quite the result against Napoli this evening.

And as the Italian side have shown, they're pretty handy.

  8. Spurs have to deal with Conte absence - Hojbjergpublished at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Marseille v Tottenham (20:00 GMT)

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg says Antonio Conte's touchline ban for the Champions League game against Marseille doesn't present a "difficult situation" - just a "different" one.

The Spurs boss was shown a red card in the aftermath of their draw with Sporting Lisbon and will now serve a suspension against Marseille on Tuesday.

"First of all, of course your head coach is a massive part of the team," said Hojbjerg.

"Luckily he has a very good staff and players who are very well aware of what he expects from them and we'll try the best to fill his role, although it's not possible to fill that gap.

"He's a person who lives every game with great passion, with his heart. We need to make sure we're well prepared, which we are.

"We have to deal with the fact that he's not on the sideline. For me it's not a difficult situation, it's more a different situation. We know what we have to do and realise the ambition."

WIth Antonio Conte suspended, assistant Cristian Stellini will effectively take charge tonight.

The 48-year-old, who managed Serie C side Alessandria for 16 games in 2017, has been Conte's assistant at Inter Milan and Spurs.

He said: "He will work with us until we arrive here and then we have to stop the communication.

"We are not allowed to speak with Antonio at half-time. He will stay on the coach with the players [before arriving at the stadium], normally we use a different coach and then we will divide our way. We will go in the dressing room and Antonio will go in another seat. Then 15 minutes after the game we are able to speak again.

"It changes a lot, the presence of a coach like Conte is indispensable, especially for a tough match like this."

Today is a big, big, big, big day in Spurs' season. Season-defining even.

Win or draw and they will be in the Champions League knockout stages, as well as being in the top three of the Premier League.

But lose and it's the Europa League and that sense of anger and resentment at Harry Kane's goal being disallowed by VAR last week could eat away at them as they drop into the Europa League.

  11. Team news - Konate return a lift for Liverpoolpublished at 18:52 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

Ibrahima Konate's return after injury against Napoli is a big lift for Liverpool. The young France central defender has been much-missed during injury absences this season.

Joe Gomez drops down to the bench to accommodate his return, while Andy Robertson is rested for Kostas Tsimikas.

Striker Darwin Nunez is another not in Liverpool's starting line-up, despite scoring in wins away to Rangers and Ajax. Curtis Jones comes in, as does James Milner, with Harvey Elliott dropping to the bench.

Calvin Ramsay is on the bench after talk of a potential start.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Tsimikas, Van Dijk, Konate, Milner, Thiago, Fabinho, Jones, Firmino, Salah.

Subs: Adrian, Kelleher, Gomez, Elliott, Ramsay, Robertson, Nunez, Carvalho, Bajcetic, Phillips.

Napoli XI: Meret, Di Lorenzo, Ostigard, Kim, Olivera, Ndombele, Lobotka, Anguissa, Politano, Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia.

Subs: Idasiak, Sirigu, Juan Jesus, Mario Rui, Elmas, Lozano, Simeone, Zielinski, Zerbin, Zanoli, Gaetano, Raspadori.

  12. Team news - Bentancur & Perisic returnpublished at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Marseille v Tottenham (20:00 GMT)

There are four changes to the Tottenham side from their victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Davinson Sanchez drops to the bench alongside Emerson Royal, Yves Bissouma and Oliver Skipp.

Returning to the side are Ivan Perisic, Ben Davies, Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Moura.

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Perisic, Dier, Lenglet, Davies, Sessegnon, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Lucas, Son, Kane.

Subs: Forster, Royal, Spence, Doherty, Sanchez, Tanganga, Skipp, White, Bissouma, Sarr, Bryan.

There's a lot of ex-Arsenal representation in the Marseille squad.

Former Gunners and Manchester United striker Alexis Sanchez starts alongside Nunes Tavares, currently on loan from Arsenal.

Former Arsenal full-back Sead Kolasinac is on the bench, alongside ex-West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet.

Marseille XI: Pau Lopez, Mbemba, Bailly, Balerdi, Rongier, Veretout, Clauss, Guendouzi, Harit, Tavares, Sanchez.

Subs: Ngapandouentnbu, Blanco, Gigot, Gerson, Payet, Suarez, Under, Kolasinac, Kaboure.

  13. State of play in Group Bpublished at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

In the two early games, the scores are Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Club Bruges and Porto 2-0 Atletico Madrid at half-time.

Bruges and Porto are already in the last 16 - but there are still things to play for.

Club Bruges will win the group if they match or better Porto's result. If Porto pick up more points than Bruges, they finish top.

Atletico will finish in the Europa League place unless Bayer Leverkusen better their result.

So as things stand... Porto win the group and Atletico are out of Europe.

    Tottenham's need is greater tonight.

They are in a right old scrap for qualification in Group D, in which all four sides know a win would put them in the knockout stage.

Liverpool are already through, but face a proper what could be a right old ding-dong with Napoli for top spot.

We'll have live text commentary of both those games (with updates from elsewhere) on this very page.

Neither Liverpool nor Tottenham have been having the best time of it of late.

Their respective Premier League campaigns have taken a blow or two in recent weeks.

But tonight, in Europe, they can give themselves a much-needed lift.

Both can top their group. But it's not going to be easy...
