    The year 2022 will be a rollercoaster of memories for the Rangers support who remember the rampaging run to Seville for a dream final, before the nightmare of the Champions League group stage took hold. The test will be getting back here next season and making amends.

  3. 'Club won't spend money that's not there'

    More from Giovanni van Bronckhorst: "Ajax are a team who are used to avoiding the press with their movements. We know the Ajax school, how comfortable they are with the ball - they showed that today.

    "There was a big difference in freshness; they didn't have a game at the weekend, and we had only two days to prepare. Not only football wise, but physically as well. That's for everyone to see.

    "This is the first time for many of my players to play in the Champions League. They're not used to the level of opponents. Of course the injuries don't help, but whenever you are on the pitch for Rangers, you expect to get results.

    "The positive is that we operated on the highest level after 12 years. We need to be better - every time you aren't in the right positions, you will struggle against any team. We have to learn and take that to the next game.

    "The club will do everything to try to build the strongest squad. I read many stories we struck gold with so many millions coming in - it's not true. That creates an expectation that we can buy new players, but I don't think the club will spend millions if the money isn't there."

    Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst: "It started well with two good ties against Union and PSV to qualify for the Champions League, but after playing six games you can see the difference in level - that's why it's very difficult for us to get results.

    "You know the gap is there, but we don't want to concede so many goals. We struggled against teams of the highest quality, it's a big learning experience for us.

    "I've competed in this competition, I won this competition, so I know the other side. Now I face the side of the team who is not on the same level yet, and we struggled with that. Liverpool, Napoli, Ajax are teams who are operating in this league for years now, and that's been hard for us.

    "Of course we want to be involved again next year, but then we have to do better. It's been hard, those are facts."

    Despite a poor campaign overall, Ajax have enjoyed two comfortable performances and wins over Rangers, starting in matchday one in Amsterdam and finishing here.

    They can now look forward to the Europa League after Christmas while Rangers' focus shifts on trying to wrestle the title back off Celtic.

    The team that I watched play the Europa League final - it's night and day in terms of the intensity, the quality. Rangers look lost.

    Rangers captain James Tavernier tells BT Sport this Champions League campaign has been "a learning curve" for this Rangers side.

    "It's obviously tough to take," he said. "You want to finish the final game, especially at home, with a positive result, we couldn't do that but we will need to take it on our stride going forward and we'll come back stronger.

    "It's the finer details when you're playing against this quality of opposition. If you switch off for two seconds they'll punish you.

    "We will learn from this. It was a proud moment for all of us coming into this competition, we haven't done ourselves justice, we haven't given the fans the minimum of what they wanted and we'll own up to that and apologise.

    "We have to be better. We never want to be beaten, we're a club known for winning games and trophies. We haven't met the mark."

    Liverpool recorded a 2-0 victory at home against the impressive Napoli. Despite that, Napoli top group A.

    And it finished 4-2 to Barcelona against Viktoria Plzen, which, as we've spoken about, leaves Rangers with that unwanted record.

    There were spells throughout the game where Rangers looked to be posing more of a threat to Ajax but they were so comfortable. Rangers huffed and puffed and everyone at the club will be glad the campaign is over.
