Absolutely brilliant bit of defending from Calvin Bassey, heading off the line to deny Sakala, and reminding the home fans what a good player they lost when he left for the Netherlands. Much more promising from Rangers, though.

  2. CLOSE!published at 20:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Rangers 0-1 Ajax

    So close for Rangers.

An inch-perfect chipped cross to the back post finds Fashion Sakala loitering. His thumping header looks destined to crash into the net, only for that man, Calvin Bassey, to thwart his old team on the line.

    Rangers 0-1 Ajax

Rangers have steadied the ship a bit here. They're pressing Ajax at the back and trying to cause panic in the Dutch backline, particularly on the right with Fashion Sakala and James Tavernier. However, the visitors are holding firm.

  4. 'Bit of a scuff'published at 20:09 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Rangers 0-1 Ajax

    Kheredine Idessane
    BBC Sport Scotland at Ibrox

Bit of a scuff there from Berghuis but they all count, and he certainly fooled the Rangers rearguard. Worst possible start for Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side, conceding their 20th goal of the group campaign so far.

  5. 'A nightmare start'published at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

It's absolutely dreadful defending from Rangers. Tavernier caught sleeping. It's a lovely lay-off from Kudus and Berghuis is there. A nightmare start.

    Steven Berghuis

It took Ajax just four minutes to slash open the Rangers defence.

The hosts are unlocked down the right-hand side with a cute ball across. A teasing lay-off is provided for Steven Berghuis, who awkwardly sends a cool finish into the bottom corner with Allan McGregor stranded.

Not as loud a roar at the Champions League theme as we have become accustomed to in Scotland in recent weeks, but still a rousing enough reception.

This good be a good night for Rangers. It could, potentially, be an out-of-this-world sensational night. However, the bumper crowd inside Ibrox will no doubt take the former right now.

Rangers were excellent offensively against Aberdeen at the weekend and a similar performance will be needed tonight against an Ajax side that do ship goals.

Right, the teams are back in. the big Champions League football parachute is getting looked out. Last chance to go stick the kettle on or nip to the loo before the players emerge.

    Rush back, now...

  12. Going out on a high - Van Bronckhorstpublished at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Rangers v Ajax (20:00)

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst tells BT Sport his side's aim for tonight is for a "positive result".

"We want to end the Champions League season on a high, on a win," he said.

"It's the same intentions we had against Napoli and Liverpool at home. We started really well on the front foot, created a lot of chances in both games and that is what we want to do tonight too.

"In the Champions League you need to be clinical, because you don't get that many chances. You need to have the focus for 90 minutes at this level otherwise you get exposed.

"For the fans, it is important we get a positive result."

Rangers fans will be pleased to see Alex Lowry out there warming up. The 19-year-old has not featured for the first team this season and is making his way back from a horror tackle in a game against Dumbarton when he was taken out in cowardly fashion after scoring a hat-trick for the B team in Challenge Cup tie in August.

He's joined among the substitutes tonight by fellow teenagers Connor Allan, Robbie Fraser and Adam Devine.

That's the biggest away support I've seen at Ibrox since Celtic used to get the whole of the Broomloan Road Stand. Looks like around 3,000 Ajax fans in the traditional 'away' corner, dozens of whom were here yesterday watching the Dutch side train.

  18. 'Ajax are confident'published at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Rangers v Ajax (20:00)

Dutch journalist Eline de Zeeuw is talking to Sportsound about Ajax's recent struggles...

"Everyone was so excited after Ajax beat Rangers 4-0", she said. "It was like tiki-taka. Now they cannot find each other, they are out of form - it is hard to watch at times.

"Ajax fans say you have to aim higher - there is criticism. A few of the new players haven't been performing that well.

"There is also criticism of [Calvin] Bassey. He was bought for millions; some critics say he isn't providing enough, he isn't fast enough, he isn't aggressive enough. He was supposed to fill the void of Lisandro Martinez.

"That can all change, maybe he just has to get going. Ajax are confident about tonight, and they need to close the group with a good feeling. They have a big game coming up against PSV in the Eredivise."

So, Ajax go with nine of the starting XI from the 4-0 pasting at the Johan Cruyff Arena, dispelling any notion that they might be coasting before a big showdown with PSV Eindhoven at the weekend.

The first stirrings inside the stadium come from the visiting fans, with one huge red and white flag hoisted aloft. I know the Dutch are a tall bunch but there's no way the pole it's on was sneaked in down anyone's trouser leg.

  20. Commentator's notes from the press gantrypublished at 19:14 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Rangers v Ajax (20:00)

    Alasdair Lamont, BBC Sport Scotland

If Rangers have endured a torrid Champions League campaign, Ajax haven't had an easy time of it since their 4-0 thrashing of Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side on matchday one.

Four straight defeats and 15 goals conceded mean this is the end of the road for them in the Champions League this season, though barring an unlikely five-goal reverse at Ibrox they will find solace in the Europa League.

Those high-profile defeats have brought criticism from Dutch pundits, not least of Calvin Bassey, whose transition from Rangers to Ajax has not been an entirely smooth one.

Their domestic fortunes remain positive though - a point clear at the top of the Eredivisie with a game in hand on second-placed PSV Eindhoven.

Only once have their Champions League travails had a knock-on effect in the league, when they lost away to AZ Alkmaar (destroyers of Dundee United) following the narrow 2-1 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield.

They have another big domestic challenge this weekend when PSV visit Amsterdam and there are suggestions some top players could be rested with that in mind and third place all but assured in Group A.
