  2. What does history tell us?published at 19:03 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Rangers v Ajax (20:00)

Remember Rangers need five goals? Well. we've jumped into the archives to have a look back at some previous big results on the continent. We've got two hours to fill before kick-off, so endulge me...

In season 1960-61, Rangers beat Borussia Monchengladbach 11-0 on aggregate in the Cup Winners' Cup. Dundalk were despatched 6-1 on Fairs Cup duty in 1968-69, but that is nothing compared to the 10-0 and 8-0 tonkings handed out to Valletta in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1983. The Maltese team were beaten 10-0 on aggregate seven years later in the European Cup, too.

In the Champions League era, Alania Vladikavkaz of Russia, Faroe Islands side Gi and Austria's Sturm Graz have all been beaten by five goals or more in a single match by Rangers, while Amica Wronki of Poland, Gibraltar's St Joseph's and Lincoln Red Imps have also been scudded by at least a five-goal margin in continental competition.

I didn't think Rangers would be as poor as they have been. You don't want the record of being the worst team ever in the group stages. A good result tonight would go a long way to rebuild confidence.

Tillman is not defensively minded, Arfield likes to get forward. There will be a lot of onus on Davis to cover ground. He needs to have a big game if Rangers are to have any control in midfield.

    Rangers v Ajax (20:00)

Giovanni van Bronckhorst makes three changes from the side that dispatched Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon.

Borna Barisic replaces the injured Ridvan Yilmaz at left-back, John Lundstram is suspended and Ben Davies misses out, so Scott Arfield partners Steven Davis in midfield, whilst James Sands moves back into central defence.

    Rangers v Ajax (20:00)

Ajax have conceded the most headers in this season's Champions League with five, and Rangers have shipped the most goals from crosses, also with five.

Rangers happen to be second for most headers conceded, whilst Ajax are second for goals conceded from crosses.

An area to target for both sides, be that from set-pieces or from open play.

There was such a positivity about Rangers being back in the Champions League - a buzz. The buzz has flickered and almost gone out. For something that was so special, it has brought about a negativity and a criticism particularly on Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

  10. The worst ever?published at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Rangers v Ajax (20:00)

While the return to the Champions League hasn't been overly pleasant for Rangers, they'll be keen to avoid breaking an unwanted record in the competition.

On 20 occasions a team has finished on zero points, however Dinamo Zagreb hold the record for finishing with no points and have a goal difference of minus 19.

Both Rangers and Viktoria Plzen - who play Barcelona tonight - sit on zero points and a goal difference of minus 18 and minus 17, respectively.

Would you take a dreary 0-0 right now...?

  11. An ominous recordpublished at 18:25 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Rangers v Ajax (20:00)

Rangers have lost five times against Ajax in European competition, more than any other opponent.

Two of those defeats have come at Ibrox - no team has ever won away to Rangers in Europe more than twice...

A chance to set the record straight, perhaps.

  13. Before the dream died...published at 18:16 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Rangers v Ajax (20:00)

It was on a relatively sunny late summer's night in Amsterdam when the glow of returning to the Champions League was obliterated at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Three goals down at half-time, Rangers were shell-shocked in front of a roused crowd who were being dazzled by a team still in its infancy after a summer rebuild. Another goal would be conceded later on to top off a grim night.

It was the harshest of reintroductions to life in with the big boys. Things haven't improved much since for Van Bronckhorst's men, while things have pretty much nose-dived for Alfred Schreuder's team, too, despite briefly holding an Anfield lead on matchday two.

  15. Five is the magic numberpublished at 18:10 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2022

    Rangers v Ajax (20:00)

    Five. Everyone got it? Five.

That's the margin of victory Rangers need this evening to overturn Ajax's group lead and squeak into the Europa League.

Why five? Well, in the Champions League it goes on points, then head to head, then goal difference. As things stand, Ajax are three points ahead, with their only win only coming against Rangers in Amsterdam in a 4-0 victory. Therefore, only bettering that will do for Giovanni van Bronckhorst's team.

Football has a habit of overcomplicating things, but let's keep it simple. Think Jackson 5. Think Famous Five. Think even this mob.

Ah the Champions League. It's been a right laugh, eh?

Welcome to tonight's coverage of Rangers' final Champions League group game against the team which kicked it all off back in September on match day one.

Hopes of making it out the group have gone for both teams, but that doesn't mean there's not something on the line tonight. Well, maybe.

Stick with us as we'll give you the big build up to tonight's - hopefully - big game.
