  3. 'It is important to be visible'published at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2022

Wales forward Jess Fishlock says homophobic comments made by a Qatar World Cup ambassador are "very sad and disappointing".

Former Qatar international Khalid Salman described homosexuality as "damage in the mind" and said LGBTQ+ people should "accept our rules".

Fishlock - an openly gay woman - heads to the tournament this month as part of BBC Wales' coverage team.

She said it was "a difficult situation for a lot of people".

"They are not going to change their ways just because it's a World Cup… but their ways and their beliefs are questionable around the world," Fishlock told BBC Radio Wales breakfast.

"When you hear things like that, obviously it is very sad and disappointing."

But Fishlock says going to Qatar is important not just professionally, but for her personally as an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.

"Obviously, I want to enjoy the World Cup. I want to enjoy Wales in the World Cup, but it's important to be visible to the situation," she said.

"We can argue whether it should or should not be held in Qatar. Should Fifa have allowed it to happen? I think that is more of a conversation to have.

"Then with the politics surrounding Qatar's beliefs and their way of life - that is another conversation to have with regards to progression and progression of beliefs in a certain country."

  6. Fans take interesting route to Qatarpublished at 18:47 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2022

A group of Welsh football fans have set off for Qatar - but not everyone - notably superstar Gareth Bale - is confident they will make it for their first World Cup game.

That is because they are travelling the 5,000 miles (8,000km) by electric car.

Even Wales captain Bale - usually supremely confident with anything Welsh football-related - has his doubts.

But the group are confident they will be there to see him lead the team out against the USA on 21 November.

The group set off in the wind and rain on Friday, 28 October, destined for sunnier climes.

"We know most people think this is a mad plan - we've even had Gareth Bale himself sat in the car looking a bit doubtful about whether we can actually achieve this," said Nick Smith.

"But we're confident in the car and we're up for the challenge. We're driven by both a love for football and a passion for the positive change electric cars can bring for people and the planet.

"There will be bumps in the road for sure but we've got loads of support behind us and we can't wait to get to Qatar and join the other fans and support Wales in their first World Cup in 64 years."

The group set-off from the Football Association of Wales' headquarters at the Vale Resort, Vale of Glamorgan, on Friday with former Cardiff City footballer Scott Young and fellow fans Huw Talfryn Walters and Walter Pennell.

  7. Neil Taylor retirespublished at 18:41 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2022

Here is one you might have missed this week... Former Wales international defender Neil Taylor has announced his retirement at the age of 33.

Taylor played for Wrexham, Swansea City, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough in a career which spanned 15 years.

The left-back played 43 times for Wales, including every game in their run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals.

"I feel like I've rinsed out every ounce of ability (or lack of) that I had through hard work, determination and sacrifice," Taylor said.

Writing on social media,, external Taylor added: "My mum said to me when I was seven-years-old, if you ever want to stop you can, but if you're in, you're all in, and I was.

"But I no longer am. I've enjoyed my career immensely, playing from the National League all the way up to the Premier League and to the dizzy heights with my beloved Wales."

  8. 'An impossible dream come true'published at 18:36 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2022

For almost 40 years it has been sung to celebrate the Welsh language, history and culture.

So it is perhaps fitting that Dafydd Iwan's song, which translates as 'We're Still Here' in English, should mark a moment in history for Wales.

Rob Page's side have qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1958 and Yma o Hyd has been chosen as the official song for Qatar.

The song has been remastered and features live recordings of the Wales fans - the Red Wall - in full voice at recent matches.

"It's an impossible dream come true," said Iwan.

  9. Tough selection choices await Wales boss Robert Pagepublished at 18:31 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2022

When Wales manager Rob Page takes to the microphone, it will not be the first time that a crowd eagerly await the calls from the stage of Tylorstown Welfare Hall.

Every Tuesday evening, the last remaining miners welfare hall in the Rhondda Fach valley has its family bingo night.

Tonight though, the prize is something a little different. The calls more significant than two little ducks, even if they will be unlucky for some.

Because it is at this unusual setting, a few minutes' drive away from Page's childhood home, that Page will announce the 26 names to travel to Qatar for the country's first World Cup appearance in 64 years.

Many choices will be obvious, but some are still being debated by fans trying to guess who will be on the plane.

The decisions of the manager match the enormity of the honour for those selected whose time to impress has been and gone.

The questions can only be answered by the 48-year-old former defender on Wednesday evening - including the few key issues that are still splitting supporters.

As Wales manager Robert Page prepares to announce his squad for the World Cup, the man who saw him bloom as a football teenager has no doubt about his abilities to inspire.

He is a born leader, according to former coach Lynn James.

Page will name the squad later on Wednesday in his home area of Tylorstown, in Rhondda.

Mr James described him a "very well rounded character" who "emanated a leadership quality".

  14. James absence a big blow for Englandpublished at 18:17 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2022

In case you missed it, a big blow today for one of Wales' World Cup group rivals.

Chelsea defender Reece James says he is "devastated" to not be included in England's World Cup squad.

The 22-year-old sustained the injury against AC Milan on 11 October but remained optimistic of recovering in time for the competition.

He began jogging this week after Chelsea had initially said he was expected to be out for eight weeks.

"The minute I injured my knee, I knew the turnaround to make the World Cup would be tight," James said on Twitter., external

"But I always felt it was possible.

"I've worked harder than I ever thought I could to give myself the best chance of going and truly believed I could help the team."

It is understood that England manager Gareth Southgate deemed it too big a risk to take James.

But James said: "I appreciate there was a risk on both sides, but it was one I was willing to take.

"Good luck to the boys. I'll be back soon. Stay safe and sending love."

Two of Wales' younger forward players are doubts to make the squad due to injury.

Rubin Colwill and Tyler Roberts are both be available for Rob Page's Wales World Cup squad but are in a race to recover from injuries.

Cardiff City's interim manager Mark Hudson brought Colwill on as a second-half substitute on Tuesday and is hoping to get "some more minutes" before Qatar.

  18. Mr Medals is 'not 100%'published at 18:02 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2022

Another year, another major trophy won by Mr Medals, Gareth Bale.

The Wales captain says he is not fully fit despite his crucial late goal in Los Angeles FC's MLS Cup final triumph over Philadelphia Union.

Substitute Bale scored a 128th-minute equaliser to set up a penalty shootout which LAFC won.

It was the 33-year-old forward's first appearance in over a month because of what he calls a "slight issue".

"I'm not 100% at the moment. I'm still coming back, I still have a few little issues like most people do," Bale said.

  19. Joe Allen's race for fitnesspublished at 17:56 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2022

One of the players of the tournament at Euro 2016, Wales will be desperate to see Joe Allen named in today's squad.

The Swansea City midfielder is facing a race to be fit for Wales' opening World Cup match with the United States on Monday, 21 November.

Swansea have confirmed that the 32-year-old will not play before Wales' World Cup opener in Qatar.
