Marcus Rashford scored one and created another as Manchester United overcame illness issues to beat Nottingham Forest and move to within a point of the top four.

Rashford converted a superb opener after 19 minutes when he was picked out by Christian Eriksen in a pre-planned corner routine, allowing the striker to exploit Forest's failure to track his run by sweeping a first-time shot past Wayne Hennessey.

The England forward turned provider three minutes later, cutting in from the left wing and rolling a pass to Antony Martial, whose low finish from the edge of the area found the net after Hennessey failed to hold.

Forest's keeper denied Antony, Martial and Rashford before substitute Fred profited from an excellent through ball from fellow Brazilian Casemiro to find the bottom corner three minutes from time.

Forest never recovered from that first-half double blow, although they did have a goal ruled out by VAR just before the break.

Steve Cooper's men have not scored a league goal away from the City Ground since 20 August and remain second bottom.

For United, it completed a fourth successive victory in all competitions and underlined the theory that the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo will not have a negative effect on the remainder of their season.

    Earlier today...

Chelsea boosted their top-four hopes as they resumed their Premier League season with a comfortable victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

Having failed to score in three consecutive matches prior to the break for the World Cup it took Chelsea less than 16 minutes to get up and running with Kai Havertz sliding in an effort at the back post from Raheem Sterling's low cross.

With the hosts dominant, Mason Mount celebrated his 150th appearance for Chelsea in style, curling a superb effort into the bottom right corner of the Bournemouth net from the edge of the penalty area.

It drew a nod of satisfaction from manager Graham Potter, who will have been delighted by the slick performance his side delivered, particularly during the first half.

Christian Pulisic saw an effort ruled out after Havertz was judged to have fouled Adam Smith, while the German also spurned a second-half opportunity to extend Chelsea's lead.

The result sees Chelsea move up to eighth in the table, six points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham with Bournemouth remaining in 14th.

The only negative in Potter's and Chelsea's evening came with the earlier-than-planned withdrawal of Reece James, seven minutes into the second period, on his return from the knee injury that ruled him out of the England squad for Qatar.

The 23-year-old lay on the turf with his hands on his head before receiving treatment and eventually walking off unaided.

  4. 'We want to win trophies again'published at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

FT: Manchester United 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Manchester United

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Football is very up and down and you have to learn to try and control you emotions, sometimes it's difficult.

"Going out of the World Cup was a massive disappointment but you have to take your time and get your head right before you come back here because you can't afford to be losing games and be feeling sorry for ourselves.

"I'm pleased with the response of everyone coming in and integrating so quickly again."

On what's different for him this year: "I think the main thing is that I'm enjoying myself and I'm focused and happy. I'm hoping that can carry on. I want to have a really good season this year and hopefully win a trophy with the club. "

On if he's confident United can win trophies again: "That's the main aim. It's an ambition that we've had for a while. When I first came into the team we had a good start, we won three or four trophies in the first couple of years.

"Since then we were in a difficult patch but the only way to come out of it is to keep working hard and we have to keep listening to the manager and the staff, play the football he wants to play and win games. If we keep improving we'll be in and around those opportunities."

On the importance of United's home form: "I think everyone enjoys playing here, it's probably one of the best stadiums in the world. It's got brilliant fans and when we're playing well it's a great feeling, great atmosphere. There's not much you can compare to it."

  5. 'We have to battle to win every game'published at 22:36 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

FT: Manchester United 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag talking talking to BBC Match of the Day:

"We conceded no goals, kept a clean sheet. Happy with that because it is always the base to compete. We could have scored more goals definitely. We had some great attacks, lots of movement. When you have one on ones with the keeper, you have to score more goals.

On Marcus Rashford: "It was not only Rashford but I'm really happy with his performance once again. He is in a really good pattern and if he keeps with this pattern and spirit, it is good for us and good for him."

On the front four that started tonight: "We want players in but that front four has not played much together in the first part of the season. If we can bring them together more often on the pitch, I'm sure they will progress and get routines together and score more goals."

On Luke Shaw playing at centre-back: "Shaw told me last week he can play there and said to put him in there. He played there really well, he looked really experienced and composed and it was a really good performance from him.

On where Man United can finish: "We're not looking at league positions right now, it's about where we are at the end of the season. We have to improve the process and battle for winning every game. That is the focus that the whole squad needs and every player needs to concentrate on that process."

  6. 'We could've backed ourselves more'published at 22:34 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

FT: Manchester United 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It was always going to be really tough here tonight and we knew the game was going to look as it did in terms of them having territory and possession. The goals are a killer in terms of a set piece where some players have clearly not stuck to their responsibilities.

"And then we're in a half-decent position in United's box, but then to give up the space and the territory we did, I wouldn't say we gifted the goal because they have to work for it, but it's frustrating with the goals.

"I just felt we could've backed ourselves a bit more in the game. We got in between the lines two or three times in the first half but didn't make the most of it. In the end you do have to make the most of those situations at this level.

"I'm a big believer in looking at the process of the performance. I was more frustrated at times with a lack of quality at times at the top end of the pitch, a lack of belief in decision making and taking risks and backing ourselves."

  7. 'We have to be in the Champions League'published at 22:31 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

FT: Manchester United 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Manchester United

Manchester United full-back Tyrell Malacia, speaking to Amazon Prime: "I think for us it was important to get the three points, get a clean sheet.

"We have the qualities [for it to have been more]. We keep improving. You see it in the training also, now we have to put it on the pitch.

"I think everyone has their role [in providing chances], the midfield, the full-backs, I will do everything to keep doing that."

On the importance of the clean sheet: "It was different to normal and you see we have a lot of quality, even with this back four we could keep the clean sheet."

On the impact Raphael Varane brings: "Varane is a big player and a lot of experience. He knows what he has to do and motivate us. Even with Luke Shaw there [in centre-back], he was talking all the time with me during the game so the connection was good."

On what statement this win shows: "We are ready and we have to be ready to play for the Champions League. As a big club we have to play in the Champions League every season, it's important."

  8. 'We're always in the market for good players'published at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

FT: Manchester United 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag on taking off goalscorer Anthony Martial: "He is fit to play and I'm sure if this game against Wolves was not in three days I would let him stay on. But I want to keep the freshness and save him after so long out."

On signing a new striker in January: "We are always in the market but it has to match the sporting criteria and the financial criteria. We do what we can to bring in the player we need."

On Cody Gakpo, who is set to join Liverpool after being linked with a move to Manchester United: "I don't talk about individual cases. We are looking for offensive players, looking for a striker, that would be good because we have so many games coming.

"We want to keep playing in all the competitions we are in, we want to keep going to the end of the season so you need numbers to keep competing."

  9. 'No surprise about Casemiro's performance'published at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

Casemiro is the heart of this team. It took long for him to start, I remember at the beginning of the season every fan didn't understand why Casemiro wasn't starting but now you can see.

He is a player who has won five Champions League's so I am not surprised about this performance.

  10. We need to be more clinical - Ten Hagpublished at 22:25 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

FT: Manchester United 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It is a pleasure to work with Casemiro and everyone sees how important his role is and the level he brings into the team.

"I think the players grow into the season and I think they performed well in the World Cup and now they continue. Stay in the performance, stay in the level, keep progressing game to game."

On United scoring their first goal from a pre-planned corner routine: "It is important in football today that you score from set plays and don't concede from them, we have to be good in them. It decides games.

On whether they could be more clinical: "We have to score more goals, we created so many chances and it take us just before the end to score the third goal, we need to take this moment earlier.

"Just before half-time we had two really good chances to finish the game. There are many games to come, you can then save energy and is better for everyone. For the progress of the team we need to be more clinical.

"You can see Martial and Rashford are goalscorers, Bruno Fernandes will score goals, but we have to be ruthless."

  11. 'We conceded two poor goals'published at 22:23 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

FT: Manchester United 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates, speaking to Amazon Prime: "To be honest in the end it's probably fair. We conceded two poor goals in the first half which was a bit of a kick in the teeth. We got together, regrouped. Obviously we scored then it got ruled out and we thought about getting to half time.

"We changed a few things tactically, we got in a few times but we couldn't punish them. Obviously they got the goal and killed the game off so it was fair in the end."

On his disallowed goal: "I just thought I'd scored. Obviously that's the way it is now with VAR, they find everything, so that's obviously gutting. We had opportunities to score and get ourselves back in it but we couldn't find that killer pass or chance."

  12. 'Rashford a huge asset to Man United'published at 22:21 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

FT: Manchester United 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Michael Owen
Former Manchester United striker on Amazon Prime

All in, Rashford should be getting 20 goals a season including all the cups. If he can get 15 goals in the league, that would be a very good return. I do feel Man United need that number nine, whether it is Martial or another player.

I do feel Rashford is better on the left, he will contribute decent number of goals every year but he is not going to be the Van Persie, Van Nistelrooy or the Rooney who scores 30 goals a season.

Obviously he is a huge asset to this football club, gives them something different, gives them pace, gives them directness. He played well again tonight.

  13. 'I want to score more than ever before'published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

FT: Manchester United 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Manchester United

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, speaking to Amazon Prime about the goal he scored: "I feel comfortable in those positions and I want to score goals. If I can keep getting myself in positions like that... I've spoke to them about putting me in the box for corners because I'm usually on the edge of the box!

On if he practiced his goal in training: "We didn't practice it too much but it was one from the training ground. We've seen they're very man-to-man and if you can shift them to the back half of the goal then you can get a good chance on goal."

On where he prefers to play: "I think it depends on opposition, it depends on the personality you're playing against. More often than not I prefer to play on the left but if there's a weakness in the middle or if there's a certain player I feel I can exploit I like to have the freedom to move and do that."

On his goalscoring target for this season: "Every forward has a number they want to try and reach. For me it's to score more than I've ever scored in a season so for me I think it's 22, 23. I need to try and keep scoring and affecting the games."

  14. Casemiro impressespublished at 22:16 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

  15. 'It's a different mindset to last season'published at 22:10 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

FT: Manchester United 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Manchester United

Manchester United scorer Marcus Rashford, speaking to Amazon Prime: "I don't know if it is as good as I've ever been playing but I'm definitely enjoying it.

"We're winning a lot more football games and our level has been a lot higher. Happy with how were developing and hope we can keep kicking on.

"It's a completely different mindset to last season, a different team playing different football.

"For me, when you're not in the team and coming on there is a different mindset and you have to think about making an impact and you're not sure when you get another chance or another goal.

"But I'm enjoying what I'm doing at the minute."

  16. 'Never looked good for Forest'published at 22:08 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

FT: Manchester United 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Luke Edwards
Daily Telegraph writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

If I'm being brutally honest it's never looked good for Nottingham Forest from the start of the season where they signed two completely new teams worth of players, I don't think that's ever worked in the history of football. I've never seen it work in the Premier League.

I don't think you can just buy that many players and build a winning team out of it all in one go. I was worried that Steve Cooper would lose his job, that he would pay the price for promotion as often happens for managers who bring teams up from the Championship.

He's got a big, big task ahead. To try and gel the new players into a team capable of competing in this league is almost an impossible task.

With only seven points separating the bottom 10 teams, it could well come down to goal difference at the end of the season - and Forest's is the worst in the division.

They would've gone 15th with a win but instead stay 19th.

A good performance from Marcus Rashford, he got the assist as well. The talking point was whether his play would still be there in a wider area.

I think it was an all-round solid Manchester United performance, some great technical bits. Casemiro just had that little bit of class and at the end creating things at the front and running and blocking at the back.

Forest had a go in the second half, they showed some good promise at times. Ultimately they've got to take out from it that they're just not at this level when they're playing against a United side who are on song.
