    Manchester United 2-0 Nottingham Forest

United want a penalty for a handball, but nothing given. Forest move down the other end and David de Gea makes two saves in quick succession. The first one with his legs, the second a much more routine one straight at him.

Kris: Antony must be the most expensive single footed player I’ve ever seen. It's fine having a dominant side, but you must be able to at least competently use your weak foot at this level. Man Utd would probably score a lot more (in this game and others) if he did.

Alejandro Garnacho links up with fellow substitute Donny van de Beek and it's a great chance for Marcus Rashford.

Yet again Wayne Hennessey, only playing because on-loan goalkeeper Dean Henderson can't play against his parent club, does superbly. United two up, it could easily be double that.

With Utd improving, Chelsea and Liverpool (you would assume) to come back after poor starts, and Newcastle's emergence, there are likely seven strong top four contenders this year. Missing out on the top four used to be seen as failure for any of the big six. I'm not sure that's the case anymore - you could have a pretty strong season and still miss out. Could we see the top clubs start to place more emphasis on the domestic cups to help define success?

    Manchester United 2-0 Nottingham Forest

A triple change for Nottingham Forest.

For the visitors it's Harry Toffolo, Sam Surridge and Emmanuel Dennis on and Taiwo Awoniyi, Renan Lodi and Orel Mangala off.

Soon afterwards, United make a couple of changes too. It's Donny van de Beek and Alejandro Garnacho, who scored a last-minute winner against Fulham in the last Premier League game before the World Cup, the men on and Antony and goalscorer Anthony Martial coming off.

Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen link up, but before either of them can get a shot away Forest manage to clear their lines.

But it's not long before United come again. Anthony Martial is in behind the Forest defence on the left-hand side of the area, seeking out his second and United's third goal.

Yet again Wayne Hennessey makes a great save to keep the score at 2-0.

  10. GREAT SAVE!published at 57 mins

    Manchester United 2-0 Nottingham Forest

Marcus Rashford with a dream pass to Bruno Fernandes and he lays it off for Antony. It's a great opportunity for the Brazilian who forces an excellent save from Wayne Hennessey as he sticks up an arm to keep it out.

That keeps Forest in the game.

Jesse Lingard had to walk round from the far side of the pitch to the Nottingham Forest dug-out.

He got an excellent reception from the Manchester United fans, which is only fitting given he joined the club when he was seven and scored the winner in the 2016 FA Cup final.

Jude: The way Rashford is playing at the moment he might be wearing the famous No. 7 shirt before too long. MR7.

  13. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 54 mins

    Manchester United 2-0 Nottingham Forest

A change for Forest and it's a forced one as Lewis O'Brien comes on for Jesse Lingard, who may well have just done his hamstring.

Not the Old Trafford return Lingard would've been dreaming of. A warm reception from the home fans, at the club he served so well.

Forest's Renan Lodi from the left swings in a cross from the left, Taiwo Awoniyi can't get a touch, but Brennan Johnson on the right side does well to firstly keep the ball in and secondly win a corner.

The corner is headed away at the near post though. Much better from Forest at the start of this half.

But from that Forest corner, United counter at lightning pace, before it falls to Bruno Fernandes on the right side of the penalty area, but his cross is a poor one and he can only send the ball into the side of the net.

I don't think I mentioned Brennan Johnson at all in the first half, but he looks to make an immediate impact at the start of the second.

He takes on Tyrell Malacia, beats him, swings in an inviting cross but Raphael Varane does excellently to head it behind, with Taiwo Awoniyi waiting to pounce.

Rashford may get the headlines. But what a player Casemiro is. The midfield general United has needed for years.

  20. 'Forest gave away cheap goal'published at 21:00 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2022

HT: Manchester United 2-0 Nottingham Forest

    Stuart Pearce
    Ex-England defender on Amazon Prime

I think it's been a comfortable evening for Manchester United. For Forest to gift them a goal like they have, a set play.

When you come to places like this, they're really tough at the best of times, you think don't give a cheap goal away and that's what they've done with the first goal.
