Paul Carney: Really pleased we are only playing Wales tonight. Supremely confident of victory. Absolutely nothing can go wrong... can it?

jambarrell: Southgate to go to a back five so Dier in for an attacker, plus Henderson in for Bellingham. After a dour first half, no substitutions until Grealish for Sterling on 67 min and Foden for Mount on 78 min. Sneak a one nil win.

Bob Moss: Don't know about anyone else but I will be watching the USA v Iran, much more interesting game rather than watching England and Wales kick lumps out of each other for a draw.

  3. What do England and Wales need to do to qualify?published at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

We've been dropping this in throughout the day because, frankly, it needs more than one look, so here we go again.

England are on the verge of reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup, but Wales face an uphill battle in their quest to make the last 16.

So what do the home nations need to secure a place? Let's have a look.

    England

    • England will go through regardless if they avoid a four-goal defeat by Wales.
    • They'll also finish top of Group B if Iran and the USA draw and they don't lose to Wales by four or more goals.
    • If England draw against Wales and Iran beat the USA, Iran top the group and England finish second.
    • If England draw to Wales and the USA beat Iran by at least four goals, the USA will finish top of the group, with England in second.
    • If England lose to Wales and the USA beat Iran, USA finish top of the group and England qualify second.

    Wales

    • Wales must beat England and hope for a draw between the United States and Iran.
    • If USA or Iran win, Wales will need to beat England by four or more goals to finish second ahead of them.

    Round of 16 matches

The Group B qualifiers will face the first or second in Group A, where the Netherlands, Ecuador or Senegal will go through.

    • Saturday, 15:00 GMT - Winners Group A v Runners-up Group B
    • Sunday, 19:00 - Winners Group B v Runners-up Group A

    All make sense? Yep? Phew!

  4. 'Wales are just going to give it absolutely everything 'published at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

BBC Radio 5 Live’s Nicky Campbell, has been speaking to England and Wales fans ahead of tonight's highly-anticipated game between Wales and England.

Here are some of the fan comments:

England fan Glen, in Milford on Sea: "We should be rotating the squad tonight and using some of the amazing talent that we’ve got in readiness for the round of 16.

"We’re all sat on the edge of our seats thinking we might get beat by Wales.

"I just wonder why we’re in this situation in the first place, we should’ve won the group already with 6 points.”

"Tonight will be an interesting game because Wales are just going to give it absolutely everything and I love Wales, I love some of the players they have.”

Wales supporter Mark, in Reading: "I was given the choice to support England or Wales when I was about seven in the mid 70s, and I prominently said I’m going to support England.

On watching Wales beat England as a child, he added: "I burst into tears there and then and said I’ll never support England in any sport whatsoever.

"It’s the constant belief from England that they will win everything they’re involved in."

Julie, in County Durham: "Whoever wins tonight is fine by me.

"I understand how serious fans are about their team, especially England and Wales but for me, I was born in England but I regard myself as being British.

"Whoever wins tonight for me is fine, that’s great, because it will still be British.

"We love going to Scotland and we love going to Wales, we respect those countries and their traditions. I feel part of that because it’s part of our United Kingdom."

A bit of Chris Rea World Cup magic - "Football's coming home to England, oh I can't wait to see that trophy, it's coming home at Christmas yeah, with Saka storming down the line... and it's been so long, but it will come home, Kane scores a goal, to put England in front, in the final in Qatar, it's coming home for England"

    Jurgen KlinsmannImage source, Getty Images

Former Germany striker and BBC pundit Jurgen Klinsmann, says "nobody cares" how teams get through to the knockout stage, as it's soon forgotten.

"The third round of group matches are about to begin and these games are humungous. It is a huge stage," he says in his daily BBC newsletter.

"Everyone has a different situation - 'what if this happens, what if that happens'. However, you have to put your focus just on your own game and forget about what the other teams are doing in the same group.

"You can’t speculate, you need to get your job done.

"Going towards the knockout phase, it is a completely new tournament.

"There is the group stage that you just have to get through it and nobody cares how you got through. If Germany go through with four points, then next week nobody talks about that anymore.

"The final group games are exciting but it is understandable that in the first two games some nations were not going at full risk. They know that they probably need four points to get through."

World Cup: Wales fan on taking 2,500 supporters to Tenerife

While there will be a vocal Welsh contingent in Qatar against England tonight, there will also be a surprising amount of support somewhere else - Spain’s Canary Islands.

An estimated 2,500 fans have gone to Tenerife instead of Qatar to watch Wales in the World Cup - and the fan who came up with the idea said she is having "the best time".

Bethany Evans said the idea snowballed after she posted it on social media.

She said most fans there were put off a trip to Qatar due to the cost, others because of rules and regulations.

When Wales qualified for the World Cup, Evans, from Nelson in Caerphilly county, decided going to Qatar would be too expensive. She initially suggested a Tenerife as an alternative as "a bit of a joke."

But the idea went "a bit mad" as more and more people decided to join her.

"Seeing my idea come to fruition like this it beats absolutely everything," she said.

"And that bar on Monday night, if you closed your eyes when we were singing the national anthem it was like you were in that game, and that was good enough for me."

Jingle Bells: Dashing to the goal, Ronaldo's on his way, chasing Fernandes' ball, a hair's breadth away. It wasn't meant to be, just not Ronnie's night, what fun it is to replay and see, the camera shows what's right. Bruno's goal, Bruno's goal, watch it all the way... Oh what fun it is to see the flight not alter or sway, hey! Bruno's goal, Bruno's goal, Ronaldo wheels away... but what fun it is to see a highlight I could watch all day.

Just six have been from outside the area, with eight penalties and nine from set pieces.

A few long-rangers wouldn't go amiss going forward though.

There are divided loyalties at this village primary school on the England/Wales border.

Children have seen some World Cup games at Carreghofa primary school on the outskirts of Llanymynech, which straddles the border between Shropshire and Powys.

But they will be at home for the big World Cup match between England and Wales.

Predictions include 2-1 and "three or four" nil to England and 3-1 and 3-2 to Wales.

Wales fan Josh, who predicts it will be 1-1, says he has watched all of their games.

But in the wake of the side conceding two stoppage-time goals against Iran on Friday, he adds: "I think they are good. But they're just getting a bit too over confident near the end."

Ghana v Uruguay (Fri, 15:00 GMT)

This is a match you should definitely look out for on Friday.

Ghana face Uruguay not only with World Cup qualification on the line, but also revenge on their mind after their now infamous quarter-final in 2010.

The game was locked at 1-1 in the final seconds of extra-time when Luis Suarez handled on the line to deny the Ghanaians a winner that would have seen them become the first African side to reach the last four of the competition.

Former Liverpool striker Suarez was sent off while Ghana were given a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan hit the crossbar with his spot-kick to send the match into a penalty shoot-out, which Uruguay won 4-2.

Suarez then ran back onto the pitch to celebrate with his team-mates, with Uruguay through to the last four for the first time since 1970.

    This is a nice story.

David Brooks visited the Wales squad at their hotel in Doha just hours before tonight's must-win game against England.

Bournemouth forward Brooks, 25, has not played since September 2021 after being diagnosed with stage two Hodgkin lymphona.

In May, Brooks - who has won 21 Wales caps - announced he had been given the all-clear and has been working his way back to fitness.

Football Association of Wales chief medical officer Jonathan Houghton said seeing Brooks "fit and smiling" made his day.

  18. Merson speaks of gambling dangers during World Cuppublished at 13:46 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    MersonImage source, Getty Images

Former England player Paul Merson has been speaking out against the dangers of gambling during the World Cup, especially just before Christmas.

The 54-year-old made his name with Arsenal and went on to play 21 times for England. He's been open about his struggles with drug, alcohol and gambling addiction, but believes gambling is "the worst addiction out of all of them".

Merson says he has to be careful about how many games he watches during the tournament.

"I've quite stayed away from it if I'm being honest - I haven't really got involved watching the 10 o'clock, 1 o'clock, 4 o'clock, 7 o'clock, it's too much for me," he told the Press Association.

Merson says he watches the England games and the "big games", but he has to pick and choose.

"If I'm sitting watching a game for no reason, and there's a lot of games out there that mean nothing to me, it's 'why am I watching this?', it's like I'm a recovering alcoholic, why would I sit in a pub?" he said.

"There will be a lot of people out there who will chase their Christmas money, they will go 'I'm going to bet this, I'll bet that and that'll pay for Christmas'."

Mario Ferri wore a T-shirt with "Save Ukraine" on the front and "Respect for Iranian woman" on the back.

The Supreme Committee, which is organising the World Cup in Qatar, confirmed that he was released shortly after being removed from the pitch.

"His embassy has been informed. As a consequence of his actions, and as is standard practice, his Hayya Card has been cancelled and he has been banned from attending future matches at this tournament," a committee spokesman said.

A Hayya Card is an electronic visa system that can be accessed via an app.

  20. Hazard denies rift rumourspublished at 13:35 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

Croatia v Belgium (Thur, 15:00 GMT)

Captain Eden Hazard says the Belgium players "had a good talk" after their defeat to Morocco on Sunday - but denied rumours of a rift in the squad.

Roberto Martinez's side, ranked second in the world, were surprisingly beaten 2-0 and will almost certainly have to beat Croatia on Thursday to advance to the last 16.

"We had a good talk among the players," Hazard said. "A lot has been said. We talked for an hour about good things and less good things. Now we want to win against Croatia. We now have two days to prepare. We have to be ready."

Hazard also played down comments by Kevin De Bruyne, who said the Belgium squad was "too old" to win the World Cup.

"Nothing happened in the dressing-room. Only the coach spoke. I spoke to Kevin De Bruyne, he does believe in the group," added the Real Madrid forward.

"We have to do better, we cannot deliver the performance we want [at the moment]. We have to show it on the pitch, that is what counts," he said.

"We still have quality in the group and are here to win. We lack confidence because of that last pass and that last dribble. We have to regain that confidence."
