  2. 400-500 migrant workers died on World Cup projects - Qatar 2022 chiefpublished at 09:50 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

Qatar World Cup chief Hassan Al Thawadi has told Piers Morgan an estimated 400-500 migrant workers died “as a result of work connected to the World Cup” in an interview in Doha.

Organisers have always said three migrant workers died on stadia sites with a 37 further fatalities of stadia workers off-site due to non-work reasons

This new figure appears to be an estimate total for fatalities on other infrastructure sites linked to the tournament

Nicholas McGeehan, director of human rights organisation FairSquare, said it was "the latest example of Qatar's inexcusable lack of transparency" on workers' deaths.

"We need proper data and thorough investigations, not vague figures announced through media interviews," he said.

"Fifa and Qatar still have a lot of questions to answer, not least where, when, and how did these men die and did their families receive compensation."

A Qatar Supreme Committee statement later said statistics covering the period of 2014-2020 for all work-related fatalities amounted to 414 nationwide in Qatar, covering all sectors and nationalities.

England came out 2-1 winners when they faced Wales at the 2016 European Championship (I remember this well as I watched it in a rain-soaked Fan Zone in Paris).

Roy Hodgson was in charge of England, while Chris Coleman guided Wales to the semi-finals in their first major tournament since the 1958 World Cup.

But can you remember the starting XIs from their Group B meeting in Lens?

You have four minutes to name all 22 players.

Wales have to win if they're to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

So, with that in mind, who do you want Robert Page to pick for his starting XI?

Bale was voted Wales' worst player in your player-rater for Friday's 2-0 defeat against Iran, but does he keep his place for such an important game?

Pick your team for Wales' final World Cup Group B game against England here.

Southgate will have to ponder a delicate balancing act before the final group game against Wales.

It would take a catastrophic reverse for England to miss out on qualification for the last 16 but the simple fact that there is still work to be done means Southgate cannot contemplate widespread rotation, as he surely would had they been through already.

England will know this will be a different sort of World Cup game, more akin to a Premier League local derby, against a Wales team in a desperate plight after drawing with the USA and being deservedly beaten by Iran.

Southgate is aware that the narrative that he is a conservative manager was back on the agenda after the dismal goalless draw with the USA on Friday.

He is an expert, though, at keeping out such noise and will rightly feel that phase one of his and England's task at this World Cup is complete if they move into the knockout phase and come out on top of Group B.

It felt quite telling when Robert Page, during his post-match news conference after Wales' 2-0 defeat by Iran, said: "We've got to prepare for another game against England, a local derby to finish off with."

To finish off with? Perhaps he just meant the group stage but, while Wales are not officially out of the World Cup yet, this did sound like an unconscious admission of defeat.

Wales have overcome the odds before in major tournaments, most notably by beating Belgium - then ranked second in the world - in their momentous Euro 2016 quarter-final.

But that was a better Wales team than the current one, and that was the last time Wales beat a team ranked above them in a competitive match.

They have nothing to lose against England. Page must learn lessons from the first two matches, be ready to change tactically and finally give Wales' fans in Qatar a performance to match their pride at seeing their country finally play at a World Cup.

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

Former Wales defender Danny Gabbidon and ex-England midfielder Jermaine Jenas are sharing co-commentary duties on the game for BBC One.

"We have got to be defensively solid and organised, and then look to hit England on the break," said Gabbidon.

Jenas said: "For them to find the performance they want will be fully down to emotion, their fans and knowing what it means to the story of their career, rather than being able to tactically put something together to beat England, because on that level they are nowhere near as good."

Good morning, I put this little number together! My son said it was terrible! Christmas No 1? On the twelfth day of Christmas, Southgate gave to me: Twelve Kane's scoring, Eleven Saka's running, Ten Rashford's a-leaping, Nine Sterling's dancing, Eight Jude Bellingham's, Seven Mason Mount's, Six Declan Rice's, FIVE LUKE SHAWSsss, Four John Stones, Three Kieran Tripper's, Two Harry Maguire’s and a Pickford in a pear tree.

    Craig

Your son is a harsh critic, Craig! And looking at the other contenders for Christmas No.1 I reckon this would have a chance.

Wales and England go head-to-head in a mouth-watering final match in Group B with all to play for in the World Cup.

The Welsh face a daunting task on Tuesday as they must beat England to stand any chance of progressing.

Meanwhile, Gareth Southgate's side are aiming to qualify for the last 16 as group winners and to bounce back from an underwhelming performance against the United States.

In their only other World Cup appearance, in 1958, Wales reached the quarter-finals - can they do the same again or will favourites England cruise into the knockout stages?

    Read more here.

  19. What do England and Wales need to do to qualify?published at 08:47 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

England are on the verge of reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup, but Wales face an uphill battle in their quest to make the last 16.

So what do the home nations need to secure a place? Let's have a look.

    England

    • England will go through regardless if they avoid a four-goal defeat by Wales.
    • They'll also finish top of Group B if Iran and the USA draw and they don't lose to Wales by four or more goals.
    • If England draw against Wales and Iran beat the USA, Iran top the group and England finish second.
    • If England draw to Wales and the USA beat Iran by at least four goals, the USA will finish top of the group, with England in second.
    • If England lose to Wales and the USA beat Iran, USA finish top of the group and England qualify second.

    Wales

    • Wales must beat England and hope for a draw between the United States and Iran.
    • If USA or Iran win, Wales will need to beat England by four or more goals to finish second ahead of them.

    Round of 16 matches

The Group B qualifiers will face the first or second in Group A, where the Netherlands, Ecuador or Senegal will go through.

    • Saturday, 15:00 GMT - Winners Group A v Runners-up Group B
    • Sunday, 19:00 - Winners Group B v Runners-up Group A

This is how it looks in Group B.

The winner of USA and Iran, if there is one, goes through.

For England and especially Wales, the permutations are a little more complex.

Luckily we have a breakdown coming right up....
