Declan Rice on England's forward options: "It is obviously tough. We are all so supportive of each other. Rashy [Marcus Rashford] and Jack [Grealish] came on and scored in the first game, Raz [Raheem Sterling] and Saks [Bukayo Saka] have played well too. It is a selection headache but I know whoever he picks, the others will be rooting for them. It is a proper team effort now, you need each other if you are going to progress."

  6. 'Get the popcorn ready'published at 09:38 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

Ghana v Uruguay (Friday, 19:00 GMT)

    John Bennett
BBC World Service Sport in Doha

It might be worth getting the popcorn ready for the Uruguay press conference later.

They’ve confirmed that the player who will be talking to journalists on the eve of the crucial Ghana game is the one and only Luis Suarez.

At the 2010 World Cup, Suarez became public enemy number one in Ghana for his handball on the line in the final minute of extra-time in the quarter-final.

It prevented Ghana from scoring a winning goal to become the first African team to reach the last four. Suarez was sent off and Asamoah Gyan hit the bar from the resulting penalty.

Suarez was watching from the tunnel and his wild celebrations rubbed salt into Ghana’s wounds.

Uruguay went on to win the penalty shoot-out. Now 12 years on, they meet again and Ghana fans are desperate for revenge. So what will Suarez have to say about all the drama??”

  8. 'Knockout stages should bring different pattern'published at 09:26 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Jurgen Klinsmann
    Former Germany head coach

We are seeing that the majority of goals are being scored in the second half, including all seven scored on Wednesday.

When teams are relying to some extent on the other results in the group they can be very cautious, they especially don’t want to go a goal down in the first half and so they are not going at full speed or full risk.

Then, in the second half, depending on their own quality and the opposition, if they are capable of going in a higher gear then right away they go at the other team. We saw this today with Argentina, they had a lot of tempo immediately in the second half and with this approach you can score some goals.

You can see there is a cautious approach from quite a few coaches, in the first half they don’t want to concede and they open up in the second half.

However, I think after these group stage games we will see a different pattern emerge.

  9. Penalty or no penalty?published at 09:21 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Poland 0-2 Argentina

One of the more controversial things from Wednesday's action was the penalty awarded to Lionel Messi and Argentina.

The BBC pundits, including Gary Linker, Alan Shearer, Rio Ferdinand and Danny Murphy, didn't think it was a penalty and said it definitely didn't come under the "clear and obvious" criteria set out by VAR when it was introduced.

What were your thoughts? Thumbs up for penalty, thumbs down for no penalty.

  10. El Tri disappoint Mexico, but some saying 'hola Chavez'published at 09:16 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

Alvarez doubles Argentina's lead with 'brilliant' goal

Argentine media were quick to celebrate the national team’s "resurrection" following their 2-0 victory over Poland, which saw them top Group C after a shaky start and shock defeat to Saudi Arabia.

Calling the match their best of the tournament, the Clarin newspaper said through a "show of character", external, the team was "reborn as a candidate in the World Cup".

"The team took looked like a team. A team that did not have Messi as its saviour, but as its brain and wizard," it concluded.

Fellow newspaper La Nacion also cited post-game comments by Lionel Messi, external, who said one positive from his missing a penalty was the team were "strengthened by my error". "In the second half they were convinced that we were going to win the game," Argentina's legendary forward added.

In a Pagina 12 article headlined “an enormous dream that grows bigger”, external, former player Jose Luis Lanao writes that the joy of of their vital victory is "contagious", describing it as a "firm, overwhelming triumph that had personality".

"Football has to be believed in, and Argentina believed in it," he muses poetically.

La Nacion also focused on Argentina’s next opponents, Australia, which it called “a defensive team that worships the counterattack”. , external

It writes their last 16 opponents from Down Under "have a game plan saved in their memory” which “bets on of one or two plays per game” while “the rest is running and marking".

  14. 'Felt sorry for Lewandowski'published at 09:02 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Jurgen Klinsmann
    Former Germany head coach

Poland didn’t risk anything today, they just played as if calculating how many goals they could concede based off the Mexico v Saudi Arabia game.

In the first half there was no space at all for Argentina to play through as Poland had a defensive line and then a midfield line of five in front of that.

I felt really sorry for Robert Lewandowski in attack for them as he was all by himself. He’s one of the best strikers in the world, but Poland did not create a single chance all game. They were just waiting to see what was happening in the other game, and that was the coach’s decision.

  15. 'The longest minutes in Polish football'published at 08:59 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    BBC Monitoring
    The world through its media

The Polish media were understandably ecstatic at the team’s nail-biting qualification for the last 16, even if the praise for their actual performance in last night's 2-1 loss to Argentina was sparse on the ground.

"We had waited for this moment for 36 years!" shouted a commentator of the country’s main channel TVP1.

"Failure, uncertainty and then euphoria. And the longest minutes in Polish football” is how TVN24 described the agonising wait for the confirmation of the team’s fate, which was sealed on goal difference by a late goal for Saudi Arabia against Mexico.

The team's talismanic centre forward Robert Lewandowski had a mixed view of the game, noting it was a success for Polish football but conceding the match was particularly difficult for him - as he was forced to act more as a defender.

One of Poland’s leading dailies, Gazeta Wyborcza, led with Lewandowski’s quote summing up their lacklustre showing, external: "We will remember the success and forget our performance."

But there was one shining light for Poland: Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny was hailed as "hero of the match" and a “superstar” for his heroics between the sticks – including a fantastic strong right hand to keep out a Messi penalty.

Asked to say a few words to his family live on air by VP1, Szczęsny, - whose last name means "lucky"- told his four-year-old son: "Daddy is not coming home yet."

    Poland 0-2 Argentina

He might have missed a penalty, but Lionel Messi was still "the best player on the pitch," during Argentina's World Cup victory over Poland.

Here's BBC Sport's Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand singing his praises.
