  1. 'Argentina will be ready to give it a real go'published at 08:45 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Jurgen Klinsmann
    Former Germany head coach

I was really happy for Argentina though, because, in a certain way, we are all Messis. We want the kid to do well and get a chance for his first World Cup trophy, or at least go far in the tournament. The Argentina fans were incredible, it was the most fanatical fan base I have seen in this tournament – and I have seen a lot of games! They were singing their national anthem from half an hour before kick-off, and this was the entire stadium, not just a block or two. It was like being in Buenos Aires.

Other sides have had wonderful support too - Morocco and Tunisia especially – but Argentina’s were by far the best I have seen. Those fans will have liked what they saw too as this was huge progress for Argentina. The rotation in the front three between Alvarez, Messi and Di Maria was excellent and the midfield three worked very well, with De Paul doing a crazy amount of work.

They won almost all the one-on-one battles, and Poland were left to just bunker in front of their own 18-yard box. Argentina thoroughly deserved the win and could have scored a lot more goals. They’ll be relived and ready to give the tournament a real go.

It was some night in Stadium 974 as Argentina finally showed why they have been so heavily tipped to win the World Cup.

A brilliant performance on the pitch as they coasted past Poland but an equally impressive performance off it. Argentina fans were in incredible voice throughout... and that didn't stop on their way home.

Right, back to Group C reaction for a little bit longer.

The Poland game finished first last night, which left them waiting on the pitch to see if Mexico could score the goal that would see them through and knock Poland out.

BBC pundit and former Manchester City right-back Pablo Zabaleta was reminded of a certain day in 2012 and took great pleasure in telling Rio Ferdinand...

Defender Ben White has left England's World Cup squad in Qatar to return home for personal reasons.

The Arsenal player is not expected to return for the rest of the tournament, England said in a statement.

"We ask that the player's privacy is respected at this moment in time," it added.

The 25-year-old has four caps for England but did not make an appearance for the Three Lions as they finished top of Group B.

He was not selected for the first two group games against Iran and the United States and missed the win against Wales on Tuesday night because of illness.

Arsenal said on social media: , external"We're all with you, Ben."

Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1 but agonisingly went out of the World Cup on goal difference on a night of incredible drama in Doha.

With Argentina beating Poland 2-0 in Group C at Stadium 974 and Mexico leading by the same scoreline at Lusail Stadium in the 94th minute, Gerardo Martino's side needed one more goal to prevent them from going out according to Fifa's fair play rule.

But Salem Al Dawsari's injury-time consolation goal for Saudi Arabia sent the distraught Mexicans home anyway, leaving the Polish players to celebrate across the city.

After a stop-start first half with little rhythm to it, the match burst into life two minutes after the break as Henry Martin reacted quickest to finish Cesar Montes' flick on.

Mexico fans had barely calmed their celebrations before Luis Chavez curled a glorious 30-yard free-kick into the top corner to send their supporters into pandemonium.

They thought they had another but Hirving Lozano's low strike was chalked off for offside and Martin should have had a second but volleyed over from 12 yards out.

It was all Mexico as they pushed for further goals. Chavez nearly struck another stunning free-kick but Mohammed Al Owais palmed it out, then Orbelín Pineda curled narrowly wide.

Mexico thought they had sealed progression when Uriel Antuna stroked in late on, but that too was flagged for offside and they went out in the most excruciating manner.

  9. Watch: Two goals and a saved Messi penaltypublished at 08:24 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Poland 0-2 Argentina

It wasn't looking too promising for two-time winners Argentina, when Lionel Messi was denied by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny from the spot in the first-half.

But goals from Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister and Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez, was enough to secure qualification as group winners.

Argentina completed the turnaround from the shock opening World Cup loss to Saudi Arabia by qualifying for the last 16 in impressive style against Poland - who went through on goal difference having finished level on points with Mexico.

Lionel Messi was the catalyst for the crucial win against Mexico that got Argentina's campaign back on track after their opening defeat to Saudi Arabia, and he was instrumental again as they illustrated why they were regarded as one of the tournament favourites, before a second-round match against Australia.

Poland were set to progress on the Fifa Fair Play rule for having fewer yellow cards than Mexico - until Saudi Arabia pulled one back deep into stoppage time in their 2-1 loss to the Concacaf side - and will now face France after surviving an incredibly dramatic finale where another goal for Argentina or Mexico would have knocked them out.

Argentina ran out comfortable winners with second-half goals from Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister and Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez, but the game still held real drama and jeopardy in the closing stages as Poland knew another goal conceded, or another goal for Mexico against the Saudis, would send them out on goal difference.

Argentina dominated throughout but had to wait until after the break to make the breakthrough as Messi saw a first-half penalty saved by Poland keeper Wojciech Szczesny after the pair had collided in an aerial challenge, a harsh award after a video assistant referee consultation.

Mac Allister gave Argentina the lead they deserved when he swept home Nahuel Molina's cross a minute after the break and Alvarez sealed victory with a fine finish into the top corner in the 67th minute.

Group C, then. What a night of entertainment it brought us.

It ended with Argentina winning the group and Poland going through on goal difference from Mexico, Saudi Arabia ended up finishing bottom of the group.

That only tells some of the story though...

Poland and Mexico were split by just discipline points at one point in the second half.

They had the same points, same goal difference, same goals scored.

But, a late consolation goal for Saudi Arabia against Mexico, who were pressing forward for the goal needed to see them through, meant Poland progressed on goal difference.

  17. Arnold has 'instilled a real esprit de corps'published at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Australia 1-0 Denmark

    Graham ArnoldImage source, Getty Images

Former Australia and Aston Villa goalkeeper, Mark Bosnich, told BBC Radio 5 Live, the Soccerroos qualifying is a "fantastic achievement" and manager Graham Arnold deserves all the credit.

"It's absolutely amazing. It is a minor miracle that the Australian boys are there in the first place, after having to go through the play-off rout.

"But to then qualify from the group, especially after being beaten 4-1 by France in the opening game, is a fantastic achievement.

"The manager Graham Arnold, has to take a lot of the credit. There was a lot of criticism from the qualifying campaign and the Australian Football Association stood by him.

"He perhaps on paper doesn't have the best team on paper, compared to the team of 2006 but he's instilled a real esprit de corps and a real spirit.

"It's a wonderful achievement. A lot of the team aren't playing regularly and not in the biggest of clubs.

"So, it take a special type of manager to make them believe that they can do this."

  18. Socceroos bounce into second roundpublished at 07:57 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Australia 1-0 Denmark

It's fair to say few gave Australia a sniff of qualifying from a group featuring reigning world champions France and Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark.

But they did exactly that by seeing off the Danes - much to the delight of match-winner Mathew Leckie and boss Graham Arnold.

  19. 'Don't know if nine France changes was a good idea'published at 07:54 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Jurgen Klinsmann
    Former Germany head coach

It was a very interesting day, obviously the third group stage game is always full of drama and different approaches and you can see coaches go in different directions. They can calculate through, or risk a bit more, or like France, who were already into the last 16, just sub the whole team and give the bench a chance to get a World Cup game.

I don’t know if it was a good idea though, it definitely backfired as they lost to Tunisia. I did feel a bit sad for Tunisia because as they were eliminated despite the win, but you have to give Australia a lot of respect for getting through to the last 16 for just the second time in their history.

I was at that game for the BBC and I felt Tunisia were fantastic. In that game, and then Argentina v Poland later, we saw those different approaches. France coach Didier Deschamps did it the what Aimé Jacquet did in 1998, when France were already through, changing most of the players for the final group game. France went on to win that World Cup so it worked out OK, but it could also be that it bounces back negatively if you lose momentum.

I was a bit worried for France after that game as it would have been bad preparation had they faced Argentina next, but the evening results saw Argentina top their group, and France will face Poland which is a different story. France will be heavy favourites for that game.

  20. 'It is our fault'published at 07:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Tunisia 1-0 France

Tunisia pulled off that shock win over France, but are eliminated despite having four points.

They outplayed Denmark in their opening game but they were unable to find the opener, and what would have been a winner, and that proved crucial as the tournament progressed.

"It's mixed feelings because we're happy to beat a team like France," said Tunisia manager Jalel Kadri.

"We can be proud and leave with our head high, but it is a bitter victory.

"It would have been beautiful to beat France and reach the last 16. It is our fault for not doing what we needed to do before.

"We have been able to win over the world champions.

"We have been able to prove our efficiency and we did our best. We worked as a team. It wasn't easy for us to get these four points [in the group stage] but we leave with a lot of honour and pride."
