  3. Southgate predicted Kane goalpublished at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

Gareth Southgate never had any doubts that his captain would score in Qatar.

It's taken four games, but Harry Kane got his first goal of the tournament against Senegal on Sunday. That's not to say that the 29-year-old Tottenham striker had been inactive until the last 16 - he picked up three assists during the group stages.

With Sunday's goal, Kane now sits just one behind Wayne Rooney's all-time record of 53 England goals.

  5. 'France's weakness is their bench'published at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

England v France (19:00 GMT, Sat)

French football journalist Loic Tanzi has been on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning - and he was asked about the world champions' weaknesses ahead of Saturday's quarter-final with England...

"The weakness is on the bench because when you look at the starting XI, all the players are playing for the biggest teams in Europe - they are big players.

"But if there is a problem with the starting XI, the bench is just young people, inexperienced people, it is the first World Cup for many of those players.

"If there is an injury, for example, it will be hard because on the bench the quality is not the same as the starting XI."

  6. 'Not as big as people making out'published at 10:40 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

Tweet using #bbcfootball or Text 81111 (UK standard rates apply)

Jakee: Our defence isn't really as big of a problem as people are making out. The issue last night was that the midfield was playing too wide, giving the CBs no options to play short balls forward. Gareth Southgate changed things up and we proceeded to dominate the rest of the game.

What I like, when you talk to these players, because of the journeys a lot of them have been on - whether it's family issues, whether it's racism or bullying they've encountered, whether it's people not judging them properly - these are kids who have fought through a lot to get to the top.

To actually take that one stage further, they are going to work so hard to do it - I love the work ethic of this squad, I love their fearlessness, I love their togetherness and I love their lack of arrogance.

Perry: It's actually crazy how much England have improved under Gareth Southgate, on and off the pitch. Just so much more optimism.

Alfie: England, best team in the group stage (statistically). England best team in KO-16 (statistically). It's coming home...?

Harry Kane has scored 11 goals at major tournaments for England (seven World Cup, four Euros), overtaking Gary Lineker (10) as the Three Lions' all-time top scorer in such competitions.

  12. 'Our back four is diabolical'published at 10:23 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

    England 3-0 Senegal

Steve in Guildford was not as enamoured with England's display against Senegal on the BBC Radio 5 Live phone in this morning:

"We could have been two down in 15 minutes - we couldn't pass the ball out of our half to a white shirt for the first 30 minutes.

"Any other team apart from Senegal that is left in this competition would have beaten us in the first half - it would have been too far to come back.

"Our back four is diabolical - it's good in the air. People talk about Maguire, against Iran as soon as the ball was on the floor, past him, no pace, bang, Iran scored.

"As soon as the ball gets on the floor with our two centre-backs, they are lost, completely lost."

Steve did go on to argue that Harry Kane should be on the bench...Hmm.

If we allow France as many chances in the first 35 min as we did Senegal, we're (at least) 2-0 down... Our midfield & attack are excellent but our defence still looks inadequate at this level.

Andrew Priestley: Shades of 2002 when England won 3-0 v Denmark in the last 16 before facing a much-fancied giant (Brazil) in the QFs. Jordan Pickford just needs to make sure he’s alert to long-range French free-kicks on Saturday night…

Robert Kaye: A really good win but we have no chance against France.

Yeswe Can: So far England haven't faced a serious challenger at this World Cup. The real challenge is ahead of them.

  16. 'This is not luck'published at 10:08 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

    Henry Winter
Chief football writer for the Times - on BBC Radio

You look at this England team and it's not luck that there is this proliferation of amazing talent.

Ten years ago, Gareth Southgate was working with the FA going around the counties, going around the leagues, saying we need smaller goals, smaller pitches, smaller-sided games, let's accentuate skill.

That we needed St George's Park with all the teams together so there's an obvious pathway, that we needed Premier League academies to come up with elite player performance schemes.

The technical expertise, the level of coaching has helped developed these Fodens, players like that. It's not luck that England are in this situation now."
