Sometimes the men have had some bad press - about what does it mean to them to play for England?

You only had to watch when they scored the goals, how they celebrated together as a team.

That struck a chord, how much it means to these players out there playing in this World Cup for England and that's embedded across the whole squad and is something that Gareth Southgate demands.

Jordan Henderson brings that stability and leadership. He's not a flair player but I think the younger players enjoy playing with that leadership and then they can flourish.

Brentford fan Billy is out in Qatar and has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:

"Southgate has done a brilliant job, on and off the pitch he's made the England team a likeable team.

"I've been to nine World Cups now and every World Cup you go to, you think this team is brilliant, and then you look back on it and you think they were a little bit arrogant, too above it all, all the little in-fighting going on.

"Southgate knew all about that and he cleared it out so they have actually become a likeable bunch.

"This team is ready, ripe and ready. It's a big hurdle against France, they've got big players - but we aren't going to give Mbappe as much space as Poland did. This is the key game, if we can get over this hurdle, the world is our oyster."

Jude Bellingham has praised his former coach Mike Dodds (left in the picture) and said: "He's developed me as a player and also a person, really since I was a kid. He's moulded the person I am today."

"A lot of the reason I play the way I do is because of him."

Dodds said they clicked because they were very similar personalities and knew when to work hard and when to have a laugh together.

"I just think it was authentic," he said.

He described the teenager, who scored England's first goal at the Qatar World Cup, as a "wonderful human being" and added: "I think the nice thing is we don't really talk about football now, we talk about normal life stuff."

Dodds said he was often asked about his former player's performances, but replied: "I think I'm probably more proud of the fact that we have a relationship that transcends beyond the football pitch."

He left the England World Cup squad in Qatar on Sunday after armed intruders broke into his home with his family inside.

What better way to spend the next five or six minutes than listen to two of England's most experienced players, Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane, raving about 19-year-old Jude Bellingham.

Jude Bellingham's former coach says his "desire to be the very best at everything" is what puts him ahead of other young footballers.

The 19-year-old England star has praised Mike Dodds, who worked with him at Birmingham City, and said he had developed him as a player and a person.

Mr Dodds said they had a "natural connection" and still talked regularly.

He said he was more proud of that relationship than the midfielder's World Cup performances.

Mr Dodds, now first team coach at Sunderland, said Bellingham, who starred in England's 3-0 victory over Senegal on Sunday, had clearly been talented when he had come to Birmingham, but so were "most seven-year-olds that come into most academies up and down the country".

French paper Le Figaro, external have suggested France's World Cup journey could get a lot harder now they have to face England.

"Those who believed that France's path in this World Cup has been too easy so far, may change their minds next Saturday, with a quarter-final as explosive as it is tempting between the Blue and England," the website said.

Le Figaro recalled that the two teams have not played against each other since 2017, when France beat England 3-2.

But, over the past five years, “much water has flowed through the Seine and the Thames”, and the two teams have been "impressive" during this World Cup.

The Times have said it's a good job that Gareth Southgate has got three right-backs in his squad to deal with Kylian Mbappe.

But are any of them good enough to cope with the French forward?

French daily newspaper Le Monde , externalpraised Kylian Mbappe after France's 3-1 win over Poland.

"Since the beginning of this World Cup in Qatar, Kylian Mbappe has been something of a Bernardo in a Zorro mask in a desert. Silent but a saviour," Le Monde said.

It added that Mbappe had refused to talk to the media until the Poland match, because, in his own words, "When I want to concentrate on something, I have to give it 100% and not waste energy elsewhere".

Having provided the assist for Olivier Giroud's opener, Kylian Mbappe showcased his fantastic finishing by smacking his first into the roof of the net before curling a glorious second into the far corner.

He is now the competition's top scorer with five and added to the four he netted in France's triumphant 2018 World Cup campaign, he has already overtaken Argentina's Diego Maradona, who scored eight, while Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo has also reached that tally.

At 23 years of age, Mbappe is the youngest player to score nine World Cup goals, breaking the record held by Eusebio, who scored eight for Portugal by the age of 24 years and 182 days.
