  2. Arsenal beat AC Milan in Dubaipublished at 16:17 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2022

Arsenal 2-1 AC Milan (Arsenal also win bonus point - 4-3 on pens)

Arsenal have beaten AC Milan 2-1 in their friendly tournament - the Dubai Super Cup - thanks to first half goals from Martin Odegaard and Reiss Nelson, despite England centre-half Fikayo Tomori pulling one back late on with a header in the second half.

The format of the competition sees an extra point on offer with a penalty shootout after the final whistle, no matter the score after 90 minutes.

Cedric Soares, Gabriel, Marquinhos, Mohamed Elneny all scored, while Karl Hein saved from Brahim Diaz.

Matt Smith had a chance to win the shootout for Arsenal but had his effort saved, although it did not matter as Rade Krunic could not convert for the Italians and the Gunners won the shootout 4-3.

Here are a few more thoughts from fans in Croatia...

Ema - I'm really excited. I'm proud of my country and our players, so I really can't wait. It's the first game we have a big screen on the main square.

Sara - were going to win of course. I'm confident, I can feel it. I had the same feeling against Brazil and I have it now. It's going to be a tough match but I believe in us. I believe in our captain, Modric, but I believe in everyone they're all great.

Mac (visiting from Boston) - I'm so excited. It's a lot different to the US and I really like the energy.

  5. Preview: Messi gives Argentina 'special advantage'published at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2022

    Argentina v Croatia (19:00 GMT)

What happened the last time Argentina played Croatia at the World Cup?

Lionel Messi's presence will give Argentina a "special advantage" against Croatia in their World Cup semi-final, says defender Nicolas Tagliafico.

Argentina's progress to tonight's match has largely been inspired by Messi, the forward scoring four and assisting two of their nine goals.

"He has always been like this," said Lyon left-back Tagliafico.

"For us he is our captain and our leader. He is the one pushing us and motivating us."

But Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic believes the pressure to help Messi lift the trophy in what could well be his final World Cup could work against Argentina.

"If we win tomorrow that would make it the greatest historical game for Croatia of all time," said Dalic, who led his side to a 3-0 victory over Argentina en route to the 2018 World Cup final.

"We are among the four best teams in the world - that is an extraordinary success for Croatia. It is a great thing for two World Cups in a row to be in the four best national teams in football.

"We want more. We are playing the great Argentina, a terrific team led by Lionel Messi. They are highly motivated and under more pressure than Croatia at this moment in time."

  6. Watch: Reasons for England fans to be cheerfulpublished at 15:51 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2022

Gareth Southgate is taking some time to reflect on his future before committing to another tournament cycle as England manager.

It's all too raw to make any snap decisions, but with a squad brimming with youth, talent and enthusiasm, the future seems bright for the national team.

Here, BBC Sport examines the reasons why Southgate, the England players and fans should look to towards the 2024 European Championships in Germany with renewed optimism.

  7. 'Yes, I am writing off Croatia - again'published at 15:47 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2022

    Sutton's prediction: Argentina 1-0 Croatia

    Chris SuttonImage source, BBC Sport

I always say Diego Maradona is the best footballer ever and he won the World Cup in 1986.

Lionel Messi's amazing career could be labelled incomplete by some people unless he does the same but now he is two games away from achieving it - and I'd love to see it happen.

His pass for Argentina's first goal against the Dutch was phenomenal and shows he can still dictate little moments in games, even if he cannot do it for the entire 90 minutes like he used to.

They will need more of the same from him here and they also need to keep their heads, because they seem to play on the edge most of the time. Do that and they will get through.

Yes, this means I am writing off Croatia yet again - which probably means another shootout, which they will win.

The Gunners still lead 2-1 thanks to first-half goals from Martin Odegaard and Reiss Nelson with 10 minutes to go.

Antun, chef at Mr Bun's House at the Advent Market in European Square (where there is a big screen showing the match): "Croatia will win if Perisic has his shooting boots on.

"Lionel Messi? In 2018, we found the way to keep Messi down - we sent them home with a 3-0. This time it will be 6-0. We're optimistic!"

  11. Guardiola, Ancelotti or Mourinho for Brazil?published at 15:33 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2022

England are not the only country reflecting on the manager's position following an early exit from the World Cup.

Brazil head coach Tite confirmed his intention to step down after their quarter-final defeat to Croatia, ending his six years in the job.

Ronaldo, who won the Golden Boot in South Korea and Japan in 2002 to help fire Brazil to their last World Cup triumph, told BBC Sport who he felt might be a good fit for his country: "I would love to see names like [Pep] Guardiola, [Carlo] Ancelotti and [Jose] Mourinho being manager for Brazil...but I am not the one who chooses."

  12. 'Southgate the best person to lead England'published at 15:25 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2022

    England

Former Football Association chairman Greg Dyke, who in 2013 set England the target of reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2020 and winning the 2022 World Cup, said the FA "should be doing everything they can to encourage Gareth Southgate to stay".

"He has brought sanity to it [the role]," Dyke told BBC Sport.

"He has brought a lot of young players in. Half that team will be in for the next four or eight years. Obviously they respect and like him so he would be the best person to lead them I think."

Asked about England missing his target, he said: "Well it is a failure in that they didn't win it and that was the target we set. But in truth they were so close."

  13. What did Lloris say to Spurs team-mate Kane?published at 15:19 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2022

Lloris has 'no doubt Kane will help Spurs England to shine'

France captain Hugo Lloris says "it was not easy to find the words" when he texted Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane after his side had knocked England out of the World Cup in Qatar.

Three Lions skipper Kane missed a penalty against goalkeeper Lloris during France's 2-1 win on Saturday.

Spurs' next match is on 26 December, when they face Brentford in the Premier League. "It's a difficult time for the England national team and Harry," said Lloris.

"We had a text after the game. It was not easy to find the words. He needed some time to rest. I think he can be proud of what he has done for the national team.

"In football history, many top players have missed penalties in their career - Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo - but I have no doubt Harry will keep his chin up and help Tottenham and the national team to shine."

  15. Can Southgate let this opportunity go?published at 15:06 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2022

    Chris Sutton
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Gareth Southgate is maybe thinking 'I cannot let this go now. What an opportunity. I have seen so many bright points from the whole tournament'.

But the FA cannot give him too long to make a decision. He knows now [what he is going to do].

The excitement for Southgate is that Jude Bellingham has only just started. Bukayo Saka is developing all the time. The competitive side of him will be thinking 'can I let this opportunity go?'.

Would Gareth Southgate be able to walk into a top Premier League job? I'm not so sure he would. Having been a relatively successful manager at international level, I'm not so sure that would tick every box with the chairmen of the big four or six clubs.

Faz, Wimbledon: I've been following England since the early 70s. Didn’t see us in the World Cup until 1982. This squad play the most attacking football. Just hit 100 goals at the WC and probably 20% have been in the last two. Gareth Southgate must stay.

An Argentine pop song has become the unofficial World Cup anthem for Lionel Messi and company.

"Muchachos, ahora nos volvimo' a ilusionar" - a song by Argentine nine-piece band, La Moscas - has been ringing out in stadiums across Qatar during the tournament and it's caught fire in the dressing room too.

The band's signature sound is a heady mix of ska, rock and pop and the title of their hit roughly translates as "Boys, We Have Our Hopes Up Again".

It has become a rallying cry for the two-time World Cup-winning nation and their 40,000-strong following in Qatar.
