Moving briefly away from tonight's World Cup semi-final, BBC Sport canvassed the opinion of England fans to find out whether or not you wanted Gareth Southgate to stay on as England manager.

A selection of your responses, both for and against, have been published here.

France supporter Arthur, below, has offered his own view from a different perspective:

As a Frenchman, I'd say keep Southgate - the criticism he's getting reminds me a lot of post-2016 Deschamps, whose side was perceived as playing very good football but had choked in the big moments. But because he'd built this harmonious group, this core of players that really believe in him, he was eventually able to fashion a tournament-winning side. I can see signs of that with Southgate and this England squad, that they really believe in him and in themselves.

  4. Balmy or barmy weather?published at 14:14 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2022

    Argentina v Croatia (19:00 GMT)

The contrast between the World Cup and National League North has never been more stark.

Plummeting temperatures are causing havoc back here in the UK, with a host of matches postponed due to frozen pitches.

Argentina v Croatia, meanwhile, will be played in a balmy 21 degrees Celsius, even with a 10pm kick-off, local time.

    Argentina v Croatia (19:00 GMT)

From one football superstar to another, Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes the stars are aligned for Lionel Messi.

The Swedish striker tipped his former Barcelona team-mate to lift the one major trophy missing from his collection in a press conference during a training camp in Dubai with current club AC Milan.

"I think it's already written who will win, and you know who I mean," said Ibrahimovic, who represented Sweden in two World Cups in 2002 and 2006.

"I think Messi will lift the trophy, it's already written."

  6. Stop Messi, stop Argentina?published at 14:00 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2022

It is perhaps no surprise that Opta stats show Lionel Messi has been key to Argentina's success at the Qatar World Cup.

The Paris St-Germain forward has four goals and two assists so far in the tournament and completed 11 line-breaking passes - four more than any other player.

However, Croatia have stopped him before. In the 2018 World Cup in Russia, when they pulled off a surprise 3-0 victory over Argentina in the group stages, Messi was restricted to a single shot off target.

The Argentina legend had the fewest touches of the ball (49) and attempted the fewest passes (24) of his four matches at the tournament.

In fact, of every World Cup game that Messi has played more than 70 minutes in, that 2018 meeting with Croatia saw him have the fewest touches of the ball and joint-fewest shots.

    Argentina v Croatia (19:00 GMT)

Will Croatia make it to back-to-back finals?

Following their penalty shootout victory against Brazil in the quarter-final, Croatia could become just the second side to eliminate both Brazil and Argentina from the knockout stages of the same World Cup, after Germany in 2014.

Morocco manager Walid Regragui spoke in his news conference earlier about the 20,000 Morocco fans he expects to cheer on his players against France inside the Al Bayt Stadium, north of Doha, on Wednesday.

French news agency AFP has reported that demand for the match has been so great Royal Air Maroc has announced it is laying on 30 extra return flights to take euphoric Morocco supporters to Qatar.

It is a point that has not been lost on France manager Didier Deschamps, but he says his players will be able to handle the atmosphere inside the ground.

"I don't like the term hostile but there is a popular fervour behind them," said Deschamps, who won the 1998 World Cup as a player in front of fervent French support in Paris.

"It will be very noisy and my players have been warned about that. They know what to expect."

There are concerns, however, that Morocco could be hampered by injuries against France, particularly in defence, with West Ham centre-back Nayef Aguerd and former Wolves defender Romain Saiss major doubts.

Morocco manager Walid Regragui said: "As everyone knows, we have a number of injuries but we have an excellent medical staff and they are working very hard and coming in with good news every day.

"No-one is out for now, but no-one is definitely in either. We will put out the best side possible."

Morocco manager Walid Regragui was speaking earlier about his country's epic run to the World Cup semi-finals.

They became the first African nation to reach the last four following victories over Belgium, Spain and Portugal.

Defending champions France are next up at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor on Wednesday and Regragui has assured the world his players are ready for the challenge.

"We had perhaps the most difficult route to the semis," he said. "Every round people thought we would get knocked out but we are still here and we are going to fight to the end.

"If you get to the semi-finals and you are not hungry then there is a problem.

"We want Africa to be top of the world, but we will have to be strong to progress. We are not the favourites but we are confident - maybe that makes me mad, crazy? A bit of crazy can be good."

Fifa will introduce a new ball for the final four matches of the World Cup - both semi-finals, the third-place play-off and Sunday's final.

Al Hilm, the finals ball, translates as “The Dream” in Arabic.

Its golden colour represents the deserts of the region. It also features a unique design, setting it apart from the Al Rihla - the ball used in earlier rounds.

Croatia are aiming to become only the second country in history to beat both Brazil and Argentina in the knockout stages of the same World Cup.

Germany managed that feat in 2014, completing one of the biggest shocks in the tournament's history to beat hosts Brazil 7-1 in the semi-finals before Mario Gotze's extra-time winner denied Argentina in the final.

Croatia pulled off their own shock in the quarter-finals in Qatar, coming back from a goal down in extra-time before dumping out favourites Brazil on penalties.

If the 2018 runners-up pull off another surprise victory in the last four against Argentina, they will become only the fourth European nation in history to reach back-to-back World Cup finals, following Italy (1934, 1938), the Netherlands (1974, 1978) and Germany (1982, 1986, 1990).

Defending champions France could, of course, quickly become the fifth country to join that club with victory over Morocco in Wednesday's second semi-final.

Re: CountFord [11:52], the other side of that coin is perhaps Gareth Southgate feels there is more to be achieved with this team. There's a real opportunity at the Euros to be competitive again, and wants to be part of that. Perhaps he feels he can still get more out of this team. I personally want him to stay, he's brought so many joyful moments as an England fan that I've not experienced before. A Euros final, a World Cup semi-final and winning a penalty shoot-out! I think he has earned at least one more crack at a major tournament if he wants it.

    Jamie, West Ham

There is no doubt Gareth Southgate has a great bond with the England players and they all seem to believe in each other. It doesn't make sense to change before the Euros but we can't hide from the fact that team tactics, particularly during the match, are not his greatest strength. He tends to play safe rather than go for the jugular. Surely we must be able to add someone he respects to his team to fill this void rather than start again. Ps: I am available!

It was penalties too for Argentina. Lionel Messi's World Cup dream lives on after Argentina edge out the Netherlands 4-3 on penalties after a hugely dramatic quarter-final finished 2-2 after extra-time at Lusail Stadium.
