Gillingham are very organised. That back five are aware of their individual roles.

That was patient play by Portsmouth. They had lots of bodies in the box but were patient with their approach, switching the ball to the far side. And some direct play by Owen Dale forced a corner.

Son Heung-min is allowed time out on the left to make his next move, opting to swing in a cross that lands in the arms of Portsmouth stopper Joshua Griffiths.

Owen Dale then tries to do better in the same position for Portsmouth, but Emerson gets across to block. The League One side are getting closer to a hard-earned half-time break.

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

    Save!

James Ward-Prowse whips his free-kick on target but it is too close to Vicente Guaita, who punches away.

"We've had a shot, we've had a shot," comes the immediate chant from the away fans.

Huge encouragement for Gillingham. Pinball inside the Leicester box after a long throw before an attempt by captain Shaun Williams from the edge of the box is blocked and ends up in the hands of Daniel Iversen.

    Now then...

James Ward-Prowse is over a free-kick on the left edge of the Palace box. His delivery looks their best route to goal this afternoon.

When these two switch ends it will be interesting. The wind will be in Leicester's favour and they can keep the ball on the deck.

More loud boos from the away end as another Saints attack breaks down way too easily. Nathan Jones' position is looking increasingly fraught by the minute.

Neil: Under Nathan Jones Southampton seem to have given up already. Where is the fight? We need a big Laurie figure to give them a kick up the backside.

Ben:The trouble with Nathan Jones is that he hasn't learned any lessons from the past. We couldn't play five at the back under Ralph, why does he think it will work now?

Twice Palace fail to get the ball to Wilfried Zaha on the left as they flood forward in number. Had they done so, he would have been in on goal. It feels only a matter of time before Palace double their lead.

Around 15 minutes until half-time at Deepdale. It's not been an FA Cup classic.

Preston have had one shot, off target, against Huddersfield while the Terries have yet to have an effort.

In Reading's match with Watford it's the Royals who are pushing, but no clear opportunities just yet.

Nicholas: Bryan Gil at Spurs reminds me of a young spaniel at the park. I'm sure he's loyal and full of energy... but is often seen running around aimlessly and chasing his own tail.

Leicester cannot get going. Jamie Vardy is shaking his head. He has hardly managed to get in the game but that is down to some good work in the Gillingham defence. An attempted clearance by Jannik Vestergaard goes straight to a Gills shirt.

Tottenham are finding a bit more room in midfield now. Oliver Skipp runs into space but he's closed down quickly and eventually loses out in a big 50-50 challenge.

Portsmouth really are up for this.

Gillingham have been really well organised defensively. The problem is scoring goals. They've got just seven in the league, the lowest ever in EFL history. They are hoping that Brad Galinson will change the fortunes of the club at least in the short-term.

  20. Postpublished at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2023

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

This is a bit better from the visitors.

Samuel Edozie is fouled in the Palace half for a free-kick that James Ward-Prowse whips in. Joel Ward is first to it and heads away, but at least there was a small bit of attacking intent from Saints.
