Andrew Priestley: Every aspect of Liverpool’s performance has dipped. This squad has reached the end of its lifecycle.

Kalium Lloyd: What's that? Liverpool have conceded first. No surprise there again.

    Liverpool 0-1 Wolves

    Michael Brown

That is the best of Adama Traore, sometimes his end product is questionable but that ball is drifted right across the face of Alisson and Jimenez sliding in at the back post is inches away.

  8. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Liverpool 0-1 Wolves

Adama Traore is always a threat when he gets going and he is too fast for Ibrahima Konate down the right and absolutely fires the ball across the face of goal.

Raul Jimenez is sliding in at the back post for Wolves but can't get a touch to convert. Liverpool looking fragile at the back without Virgil van Dijk.

  9. Postpublished at 37 mins

    Liverpool 0-1 Wolves

Alisson starts it early into Thiago and he gets caught and then it continues. They are taking far too much time on the ball.

It is a ridiculous mistake from Alisson, he rolls the ball straight to Guedes who says 'thank you very much' and rolls it into the net. It is as bad a mistake as you will ever see.

    Goncalo Guedes

    A howler from Alisson!

Sunday League goalkeeping from the Liverpool goalkeeper. He tries to play a pass out from the back, but it doesn't even make it out of the penalty area and it is straight to Goncalo Guedes.

He can't believe his luck and slots the finish into the net and the visitors lead against the run of play.

  15. 'One of my proudest moments as a manager'published at 20:24 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2023

    FT: Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Newcastle

Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore speaking to the BBC: "It's one of the proudest moments in my managerial career to date. I'm really pleased for everybody at the club and I'm delighted for the players. We were up against a really good team and put in an excellent performance.

"We knew we had to perform on and off the ball, and the way we went about it was spot on. We believe we can score goals here, we got them, and then were resolute to the onslaught at the end.

"We couldn't sit back against these, eventually they'll pick you off. We wanted to engage them high [up the pitch] and we had to be brave on the ball, to play through the press if possible. We can also mix it up a bit with Michael Smith up top and I think that worked today.

"We didn't allow them to settle into their rhythm and that gave us some hope in the game. I thought every one of them did well. Josh Windass will get the headlines but Cameron Dawson pulled off a couple of great saves. You know you're going to get tested against teams like this so your keeper has to concentrate and be in the right place when needed, and he was.

"We want to improve every game and that was another step in the right direction for us. Nights like these give everybody hope, a purpose, a vision, for the second half of the season. There's a lot of hard work ahead but we will approach each hurdle one by one."

Mohamed Salah with the ball at his feet is a thing of beauty. He runs at the Wolves defence down the right, the cross is partially cleared but Liverpool recycle it and Darwin Nunez goes for the acrobatic overhead but it is headed away by some brave Wolves defending. It falls to Jordan Henderson but his strike is well wide.

  19. 'We will kick ourselves at missed chances'published at 20:16 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2023

    FT: Sheff Wed 2-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: “Bitterly disappointed to go out, I thought the performance was OK. We created enough chances to win the tie and their goalkeeper made a number of great saves but we weren’t clinical enough when those presentable opportunities were there. We have to accept the defeat and Sheffield Wednesday battled for everything, as we did, but it wasn’t to be.

“We have a very small squad and have to protect that squad for games ahead. We felt we were strong enough to win the game today and I stick by that based on the first-half performance where we had chances to score, we just weren’t clinical in front of goal.

“We haven’t experienced defeat a lot this season and it’s very painful, you don’t want to lose any game. We were determined to do well in this competition but it wasn’t to be and there’s always things to learn. We created chances tonight similar to the Leeds game that we didn’t win where we will kick ourselves when we look back at some of those moments and think how we didn’t score.

“The Leicester game [Carabao Cup quarter-final] was on the horizon for us and we picked a team based with this that game in mind and another Premier League game at the weekend. If that game wasn’t there the team selection would have possibly been different today. We are trying to juggle everything and make sure we were strong enough to win and I thought we there but obviously that didn’t materialise."

Matip can't believe how he gets away with that. It looks like it is going to be stroked into an empty net by Guedes but Matip just gets back in and puts his hand up in apology.
