  2. 'We feel like the belief and confidence is back'published at 22:45 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-0 Bournemouth

    Manchester United

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw: “It was a really good result. At times we got a bit sloppy and conceded chances but David [De Gea] was amazing and made a number of really good saves to keep that clean sheet and an important three points which we needed.

“I’ll play wherever the team needs me or the manager wants me. Back to left-back tonight and delighted to get on the score sheet. I don’t get many.

“The strides we are taking are going in the right direction that we want. There is still a lot to improve on but things are looking really good and positive and we feel like the belief and confidence is back, and you can feel it around the place, not just with the players and the staff but you can feel it in the stadium and around the fans.

"Hopefully they are enjoying it at the moment but I feel there is a lot more to come and hopefully we can keep putting smiles on people’s faces."

  3. 'A difficult last half an hour for everyone'published at 22:43 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Everton 1-4 Brighton

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard speaking to BBC Sport: "The period where we conceded three goals in six minutes finished the game. The first half was pretty even.

"We made a mistake which gave them a goal which got their noses in front and made us more edgy. We were not urgent or quick enough with the ball. When they scored three goals it killed the game."

The nature of the goals must hurt?: "Sure. Big mistakes from us."

"It was a difficult last half an hour for everyone, fans alike. Because you know the game is done.

"I won't go into what was said in the dressing room afterwards. That's for us to get right. Manchester United comes in a few days. We have to fight for consistency for sure."

  4. 'It wasn't a 3-0 game'published at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-0 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

More from Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil to PLP: "I thought we were very good, I didn't think it was 3-0 game at all. I felt the scoreline was harsh on them. We had six fantastic chances. They are a counter threat and they caught us with a couple. The boys put in a performance that looked like us.

"Out of possession we were disciplined. We had big possession for a team at Old Trafford and created chances. The disappointing thing is we can't arrive in those opportunities and leave without a goal. It was disappointing to concede from a set piece because we've worked on that a lot in the last few days. I am pleased, but I am disappointed.

"We went slightly more aggressive in the second half and tried to press more often, but from 2-0 down at Old Trafford to perform like they did, and work David de Gea, and missed some great chances, there were some positives.

"We are happy to play a cup game, but we'd be happy to play a league game. It is about freshening them up and being ready for Saturday."

Rob: Arteta can be as mad as he wants about the result, but the opposition have the right to choose the tactics they see fit to get the result that they want, and it's your job to work around it. Newcastle played their game and achieved what others haven't.

  6. 'I'm really proud'published at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Really proud of team, the way we dominated the game, the way we approached the whole game, the way we generated a lot of situations to score a goal. We had some chances and there were two scandalous penalties that weren't given.

"We opened them up a lot of times, we were just missing something in the final third, the movement and the quality we needed to hit the target more than we did. It was tough - they are a good side.

"The way we both play, it was a very competitive match. I'm really proud of the way the team played."

On how Newcastle set up: "We can't control what they do, Newcastle never play like this like they did at the end.

"The games are coming fast, we have the FA Cup, we have some injuries so lets see what we can do.

"We keep playing like that, performing like that and dominating we will win a lot of matches."

Craig: Quite worrying that almost all Arsenal substitutions recently have been for defensive players. We really lack attacking depth and it showed this evening.

  8. Not a question of anger - Lampardpublished at 22:34 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Everton 1-4 Brighton

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard, speaking to Sky Sports: "Very disappointing. It was even in the first half I would say. General play it was pretty even, three goals in six minutes, defensive mistakes, finishes the game.

"After that the game becomes a bit inbetween. At 4-0 the game is done. Those six minutes were completely pivotal with individual mistakes and collective defending issues."

How do you explain that?: "Individual mistakes and collective defending issues. It is what it is."

More from Lampard: "Possession-wise [the game was] even. They hit the post and scored from our mistake. We had a good chance with Alex I wanted more urgency. I didn't think there was much in it."

Were you angry at full-time?: "We all in it together. It is not a question of anger. We are disappointed. We want to win games."

Do you feel under pressure?: "You have to get used to that position. You are not going to win every week. We have to get back to the work. It is as simple as that. I am a Premier League football manager. There is pressure in the job whenever you are."

On January signings: "We are trying to help squad. We will look at that."

  9. 'You have to score when you get into those situations'published at 22:32 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-0 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It wasn't a 3-0 game. I think we had maybe six or seven chances but obviously Manchester United had some as well.

"That was us. We need to be sure that we produce that every week. I am pleased with the performance but we didn't deserve to lose 3-0. We have conceded a lot of goals from set-pieces, we did a lot of work defending corners and then we concede from the very first free-kick.

"The response from 2-0...[David] De Gea made some great saves and you have to score when you get into those situations."

Stuart: If Man Utd had picked that team last season that included Maguire, Lindelof, AWB, and DVB, you'd have been expecting them to lose. Casemiro is a total game changer, quickly becoming best signing of the window.

  11. 'We have to be smarter'published at 22:28 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-0 Bournemouth

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We scored great goals and I think we should have scored even more but we could have conceded one or two and and I am not happy with that because David [De Gea] had to make good saves. We have to play more smart so that is the next step we have to make.

"We have options there [in defence] but we need them because we have so many games to cover.

"It was once again a great performance [from Marcus Rashford]. I said before the season and the same with [Anthony] Martial, believe in the goal because they [the other players] will always create, so focus from minute one to the last and the chances will come."

  12. Postpublished at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-0 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth are now 19 away Premier League games without a clean sheet (won two, drawn two, lost 15), conceding 52 goals in that period.

The Cherries were unbeaten in their first six Premier League games under Gary O’Neil (won two, drawn four) but have since lost seven of their last eight games (won one).

  13. 'We should have had something from game'published at 22:25 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Leicester 0-1 Fulham

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers to BBC Sport: "In the opening parts of the game it [losing midfielders early on] did [affect them]. Losing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was a huge disappointment. We had to readjust going out and then Boubakary Soumare, who was having to change position anyway.

"We had a slow start from that and we didn’t defend the goal well. After that we created enough chances and should have had something from the game but we just couldn’t put them away. The keeper made good saves.

"It was a wee bit of everything. It's pleasing we created chances. There have been a few games where we get to the top end of the pitch but don’t create enough chances because of the passes. Tonight we created those. We made the right pass. The keeper has made a couple of good saves.

"We’ve had two performances that merited more. We haven’t got them. We’ll continue to work constantly and turn it round again.

"We’ve not started so well in terms of three losses but the performance level has been encouraging. We need to turn that into points."

Arsenal sit eight points clear of Manchester City at the top following that draw with Newcastle.

Pep Guardiola's side face Chelsea in their next match on Thursday.

Newcastle are level on points with Manchester United after their win over Bournemouth - but Eddie Howe's side remain third on goal difference.

Brighton are up to eighth after their win over Everton. Fulham in seventh after a good win at Leicester.

  15. 'Not our best game'published at 22:20 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-0 Bournemouth

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag: "I'm happy with the result. Today it was not our best game. We have to be honest, we didn't play that smart as a team. We made great goals, but at times we were quite lucky, and some great saves from David [de Gea]. We could have been smarter as a team.

"There were big spaces at 2-0 up, sometimes we have to keep the ball and recognise when to go for goal. That is the next step. It is always good to win 3-0. It was a great performance for the crowd, with scoring opportunities for both goals. To win 3-0 is always good.

"We have to go from game-to-game. The next game is a cup one, but we want to win every game. That has to be the approach. We don't want to look any further, focus on that, it will be a tough game. We need every energy in the preparation and when we kick off on Friday night."

On Donny van de Beek's injury: "We need to wait 24 hours, but it is not looking very good."

  16. 'We were resilient, we want to compete in every game'published at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I thought we were resilient, dogged, brilliantly defending all areas of the pitch collectively. We managed the game well, a lot to like - maybe not with the ball but they are a top team.

"They [Arsenal] are very good tactically, technically and in wide areas. We had to find solutions to those problems and credit to the players for managing that. The start was tough, we grew into the game in the middle, the end was always going to be us having to be really solid to get the point.

"There were a few that weren't bookings but once the referee sets his mark then it becomes that a lot of tackles are a yellow card. I never think that's fair, in fairness he was strong when he needed to be especially with the home crowd.

"We want to compete in every game, we don't want to turn up to grounds like this and not give our best. We competed to win and we didn't manage to do that but we certainly gave them a good game."

On Joelinton: "He does that consistently. He's an incredible athlete and very highly motivated, a really solid team player and I'm glad he's getting some recognition for that."

Transfers? "We'll try and make the right decision for the team, there's no one imminently coming in but we will keep assessing."

Johnny: Everyone is focusing on Arsenal and Newcastle this season, but ETH is quietly doing a brilliant job at Man Utd. No longer dread the goal notification when we're playing, and Rashford is one of the best in the league on current form.

  18. 'The best way to start 2023'published at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Leicester 0-1 Fulham

    Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva: "The best way to finish 2022 and the best way to start 2023. I'm proud of the players, I'm really pleased for them they deserve all the credit.

"It's just two days between games and the first half we were brilliant again. We showed our quality and could have scored more. The way Aleksandar Mitrovic scored was top, top quality.

"You have to be really resilient to come here and win this football match. We showed the organisation and commitment. We stuck together in the important moments.

"When I see a team like ourselves and our top striker so deep fighting for the ball it is so good.

"[Mitrovic] will get more [goals] for sure. We will keep providing for him and he has the ability and capacity to score. It's the way we play. It's not important the number, he is so much more than just a goalscorer for us. He is such a special player for me and this football club.

"We have to be realistic and to keep our feet on the ground and to fight for the points every game. No one expected us to be in this position before the season started. You are here to enjoy and embrace the challenge. Maybe people had an opinion on us after the last two times we were in the Premier League.

"We have 25 points, it's a big achievement for us now but we have to keep on working hard."

  19. 'We had two scandalous penalties'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to Sky Sports: "Extremely proud of my players. The way we played, dominated the game, tried and continued to control the game. We needed that spark in the final third. We had so many situations. And when had two scandalous penalties.

"There were two penalties. It's very simple. I'm talking about what I've seen. It was two scandolous penalties. I'm so proud of the work we have done.

"I think we lacked an extra touch or movement to finish these chances in this game.

"Newcastle wanted to set-up like this. It is not the way they play. They have not set-up like this against anyone else.

"When you cannot win you cannot lose and we kept a clean sheet and had a really good performance. Now we go again. I wanted to win the game are we drew it. We should have done some things better in the final third and we should have had two penalties to win the game."

Options on the bench and transfers: "We had what we had. We have some injuries as well and attacking areas we don't have that many options but it is what it is. That's something we always try to do to improve our team and every window is important."

  20. 'Everyone wants to win and go the same way'published at 22:14 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-0 Bournemouth

    Manchester United

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea: "We played really well and scored from a free-kick and in the second-half, in the first 15 to 20 minutes we controlled the game well but after the second goal they had some counter attacks where there was space in the middle of the pitch and we cannot concede clear chances but I made some saves and we got the three points in the end.

"Everyone is really focused. We changed both centre backs and they played really well. The feeling the dressing room is that everyone wants to win and go the same way.

"We go game by game. We have another big game against Everton on Friday in the FA Cup. I think the team was a bit tired at the end but we go again and will try to win."
