I was wrong about both of these teams last time out - Newcastle were unlucky not to beat Leeds, but I was miles out when I said Arsenal would lose to Brighton, although the Gunners had to weather a storm at the end of the game.

Arsenal are seven points clear at the top of the table now and they are coping with every problem that gets thrown at them.

It will be the same again here. Newcastle are well organised defensively, but Mikel Arteta's side are so impressive going forward.

Arsenal's other two league games in January are against Tottenham (away) and Manchester United (home).

At the end of this month we will have a much better idea about whether they can go the distance in the title race, but at the moment they look like they mean business.

    Prediction: 2-1

A big January for Manchester United begins as Bournemouth head to Old Trafford with Erik ten Hag's side facing five games in the next 19 days.

A victory this evening would see United strengthen their grip on a top-four spot in the Premier League table by moving them five points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham having played the same number of games.

Three points would also move them within a point of second-placed Manchester City, who travel to Chelsea on Thursday, with Newcastle, who are two points above the Reds having played a game more also at Arsenal this evening.

United will hope to make the most of four successive games at home as they take on Everton in the FA Cup on Friday, then Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup next Tuesday, before they host Manchester City in the Manchester derby (14 January).

As it stands, the one away game thrown in is a trip to league leaders Arsenal on 22 January.

Plenty of opportunities for Ten Hag to bring out the burgundy roll neck.

  4. Another big game at Goodisonpublished at 18:35 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    Everton v Brighton (19:45 GMT)

Every game feels like a big one for Everton manager Frank Lampard at the moment.

The draw with Manchester City on New Year's Eve was a welcome boost but they have only won one in nine Premier League games.

Defeat tonight would be their third in a row as Goodison Park.

Brighton, meanwhile, are going for a third away victory in a row and are one of the form teams in the league.

Arsenal already have a seven-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table and that could extend to a massive 10 points tonight.

They will need to beat third-placed Newcastle to do that, with Eddie Howe's side hoping to consolidate their place in the top four.

Manchester United, hot on their heels, are also in action against Bournemouth so cannot afford to drop points and lose ground.

Fulham and Brighton are both on the road looking to move higher up in the top 10, while Everton, Bournemouth and Leicester are hoping to move further away from the relegation zone.

The new year has started with a bang in the Premier League and we've got four more matches this evening with plenty up for grabs.

League leaders Arsenal are in action hoping to extend their gap over Manchester City to 10 points.

It's another important game for Everton too, who currently sit just a point off the relegation zone.
