Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to BT Sport: "We started well first half and second half; we had good spells but couldn't keep it up.

"We have to be ready for little steps and this is a little step. A clean sheet against Chelsea, we didn't create a lot of chances and they had some as well. We defended in the second half with passion and clear organisation, but we were too deep in these moments. In the end, I'm okay with 0-0 because you have to accept these steps.

"We can build on that. Both teams were very aggressive."

It looks as if there are a number of incoming players at Vitality Stadium this week, with Dango Ouattara expected to be announced very soon. A number of other players have also been linked, including Arnaut Danjuma, which would be a great bit of business.

Arnaut knows the club, knows the staff and the majority of the players. If he is available, as it appears, it makes sense. Our attacking ability is there, although it's hit a bit of a slump of late, so these two signings would be a massive help.

What we do need is a wise head at the back. In the 2015-16 season, Eddie Howe struck gold convincing Sylvain Distin to join the club. Sylvain's experience was pivotal to helping the team reach the levels required in the Premier League. The confidence he oozed was there for all to see.

We are yet to be linked to a central defender, a position we are crying out for reinforcements, but once we are (and I feel we need two), experience is a must. The question is who.

Gary Cahill last season provided that experience to help us out of the Championship. It is all well and good getting a prospect in for the future but we need someone to step in now.

Alan Hansen once said "you can't win anything with kids" and, while Manchester United won the title that year featuring lots of young stars, they also had the wise, experienced players in the side too like Irwin, McClair, Parker.

Let's hope Gary has someone up his sleeve who can provide that knowledge and steel in a centre-back pairing.

Spandau Ballet's 'Gold' is being played now.

Before that, there was a video which charted David Gold's journey from a life of poverty in childhood to owning West Ham.

"I dreamed of owning a bike," Gold recounted.

    That is some overachievement.

I think a part of the reason for Leicester's struggles is missing James Maddison. I think Maddison not featuring for Leicester is a big loss for them and has played a role in some of their results.

Four defeats at home is not good enough for Leicester and the fans. I'm sure Brendan Rodgers knows that as well. Brighton have won their last three away from home so this is looking like it will be an exciting game.

  7. Why March is finally realising his talent under De Zerbipublished at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    Leicester v Brighton (15:00 GMT)

If I had a pound for every time somebody had said over the past decade “Solly March would be a fantastic footballer if he scored more goals” - then I might be able to afford to have the heating on for more than two hours a day.

Brighton fans have always known his talent, but there was also frustration. It felt like there was more to come, if only March had more self confidence or a coach who could unlock an end product from his game.

Under Graham Potter, March was a victim of his own versatility. He was shifted around, playing full-back, wing-back, right side, left side, number 10, in a front three… nobody could really blame March for struggling to find a groove.

In 83 matches under Potter, March scored three. Following his double in the 3-0 win over Liverpool, he has four in his past five.

What has happened? Roberto de Zerbi has settled March on the right of his 4-2-3-1. More importantly, he has March believing.

After the Liverpool victory, March said: “I love playing for Roberto - he's great. He puts his arm around you and tells you you're a good player. Maybe that's what I needed.”

His form suggests so. Brighton are reaping the benefits and, if Gareth Southgate has any sense, he will do the same for the next set of internationals.

An England debut in March for March.

  8. Caicedo interest 'good news' for Brightonpublished at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    Leicester v Brighton (15:00 GMT)

Roberto de Zerbi believes interest in Moises Caicedo is "good news" for Brighton after Chelsea reportedly had a bid turned down for the Ecuador midfielder.

The Brighton boss has already authorised the departure of Leandro Trossard to Arsenal, with the Belgium forward expected to complete his move on Friday.

With the Seagulls flying high in the Premier League, De Zerbi is unflustered by rival clubs circling around his best players.

"Caicedo is very important for us," said De Zerbi, "and I hope he finishes the season with us.

"It's always difficult to be certain but when big teams want our players, it's good news for us.

"The best solution is that he finishes the season with us. If he continues to play like this in the last games, it's possible that in the summer he can leave for another team."

There can be no doubt that Leandro Trossard has made an impact at Brighton but it feels like his move to Arsenal is a solution that suits everyone.

Trossard wanted out while the club made a significant return.

On his day he was exceptional. The Belgium international will leave tantalisingly close to the Seagulls' Premier League goal record with 25 (one behind Neal Maupay and Glenn Murray).

But the 28-year-old had fallen down the pecking order and a rather public spat with the head coach ensued after his return from the World Cup - and nothing in football lasts for long.

Trossard may get his chance to compete for a place at a title contender but the overwhelming feeling is that the Seagulls have once again done some amazing business in the midst of a tricky situation.

Brighton bought a creative player who delivered 25 Premier League goals in 100 starts over three and a half years and then sold him for nearly double what they paid for him. They also have back-up in Kaoru Mitoma, Jeremy Sarmiento, Julio Enciso and Facundo Buonanotte.

After the sales of Ben White, Yves Bissouma, Marc Cucurella and Maupay, the club has shown it is in safe hands with Tony Bloom and Paul Barber.

Their dexterity is likely to be tested a few more times in 2023 as teams circle around their other prize assets. One thing is for sure, none will be sold on the cheap.

  10. Sitting seventh 'huge achievement' for Brighton - Hammondpublished at 14:55 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    Leicester v Brighton (15:00 GMT)

After seeing off Liverpool in fine style last weekend, Leicester City are next up for Roberto de Zerbi's in-form Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday.

Former midfielder Dean Hammond played for both the Seagulls and the Foxes.

He told the Albion Unlimited podcast on BBC Radio Sussex: "Liverpool was a fantastic result and a brilliant performance from what I've seen, but also I'm not that shocked and that's probably the biggest compliment I can give to Brighton at the moment.

"Brighton are playing brilliant, attractive football, winning at home, and they've scored 35 goals this season already which is a vast improvement. Sitting seventh in the league is a huge achievement.

"Before the World Cup, Leicester looked like they'd found some form, they were winning games and I thought the season was going to turn round. Since that break it's four defeats in a row.

"They're in a bit of trouble because they've got the formula of conceding a lot of goals and not scoring many, and it's not a good combination."

Che Adams says he feels the responsibility of scoring the goals to fire Southampton to safety but is reassured the club know the value of his all-round game.

The Scotland striker has four goals in 18 Premier League appearances this season as the Saints have laboured in the opposition penalty area.

He told BBC Radio Solent he understands the pressure on his shoulders.

"I know my game will get judged on goals and assists," he said. "One day you're the hero, the next you're not so good, but that's the game.

"My team-mates and my manager definitely realise that they can rely on me and that's a nice feeling. They know what I can bring and that I'm an asset.

"I would like to score more though. I've had a lot of chances but they've not gone in so it's about taking the next one as best as I can."

No Premier League ground has seen fewer goals than Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium this season (19).

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Graham Potter to BT Sport: "I thought the performance was good. Happy with the team, the energy, what we tried to do. At Anfield, it is always tough. It is a clean sheet and a point, we move forward.

"First half, we were decent, unlucky not to get the goal. It is what it is. They started the second half well, and we adjusted a couple of things and gained control, had a couple of chances. Overall, a positive day, apart from the fact we wanted three points."

On Thiago Silva: "He's helping Benoit [Badiashile], it is his second game in the Premier League. To have Thiago alongside him is a big help. He's an important player, a leader, it is nice that he is enjoying his football."

On Mykhailo Mudryk: "He's not played football for a while, he's been on a mid-season break. We had to manage his minutes, but you can see his quality."

  15. 'The University of Unai?'published at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

Southampton v Aston Villa (15:00 GMT)

From the press boxImage source, BBC Sport

Aston already gives its name to a well-regarded University, so we will have to think of another label after reading from Tyrone Mings in the Express and Star, , externalthat Villa’s “coaching staff have such an impressive attention to detail that I’m learning every day.”

    The University of Unai?

Mings continues: “That’s what you want. If you are focused on absorbing information and trying to improve when you have people around who are pushing that and you are able to soak it up, I think it’s really key for me at this stage of my career.”

You may at this point be tapping your nose and thinking that you can see what is going on here, Mings being a man of the world; transfer-window time is probably the moment when you most want to be in a manager’s good books, and is he not out of contract in 18 months? If he wants to stay, perhaps he is trying to be, as it were, teacher’s pet?

If so, I would draw your attention to these remarks from Ezri Konsa, quoted in the same paper.

”There’s a lot of information… We have meetings now which are really long – I couldn’t tell you how long exactly – but we are talking hours and it really helps us… as a player, that is what you want.”

Emery has the air of a man with a restless mind, applying the knowledge gathered over a lengthy coaching career to his new circumstances. But teaching is not all about knowledge accrued; it has to be communicated to have a positive effect. Emery may not - yet - speak English as fluently as he obviously speaks football, but he is evidently getting his messages across to the people who really count. Mings and Konsa didn’t have to say those things; Villa fans should be greatly encouraged to hear that Emery and his colleagues have their players’ full attention.

There should be no language problems between him and the two newest members of the class, however, with Alex Moreno and Jhon Duran enrolling at Villa over the last week. Moreno is a seasoned top-flight player in Spain and will provide strong competition for Lucas Digne’s place. Duran – with a name to delight headline-writers, at least if he ever scores twice in the same game – would at 19 seem to be a signing for the future. However, his record at his previous club and the money Villa are committing to the deal make you wonder if Emery thinks he may be ready more quickly.

  16. Godfrey 'small sprain to his knee' - Lampardpublished at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

West Ham v Everton (15:00 GMT)

    Everton

Everton centre-back Ben Godfrey is out of the squad to face West Ham today and Frank Lampard has provided an update as to why the 25-year-old is missing.

The Toffees boss says Godfrey got a "small sprain in his knee" during the Southampton defeat last Saturday and while he was able to make it through the game at Goodison Park, the injury rules him out of today's crucial match at the London Stadium.

  17. 'We had chances to win the game'published at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea

    Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder James Milner speaking to BT Sport: "We always want to win our home games, we know the situation we are in at the moment, things are not easy. We've got to stick together, keep working hard. We kept a clean sheet which was pleasing. We need to get that base. We had chances to win the game.

"It was tough. It was two teams that aren't playing their best at the moment. That's why you have to win that battle, the pitch didn't make it as easy to play as we would like. At time we could have made it easier for ourselves by taking an extra touch but also moving for each other. We had really good spells in the game as well. There's things to work on but a clean sheet is a step in the right direction.

"When you're in a tough period and a tough moment in the team, I think it's important that you stick together and fight for those clean sheets and that's where it starts. It's not the best football matches that we are playing but it's small steps to get where we know we can be. We would have liked to win it, it's pleasing that we had the chances. This is a small step in the right direction but we have got a long way to go to where we want to be."

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount to BT Sport: "You know this is going to be a tough place to come. Overall, we controlled a lot of it.. We could have taken our chances.

"It has been tough lately, we want to win games. I feel like it is getting better and we are working hard today. We'll definitely take this today. The final passes weren't there, if it was maybe we score a few first half, but as I said, this is a tough place to come. They press you and force mistakes, like the second half and I think we came through that."

Bournemouth v Nottingham Forest (15:00 GMT)

    Chris SuttonImage source, BBC Sport

    Sutton's prediction: 0-1

Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil has lost all six games since being appointed on a permanent basis, including four league defeats where the Cherries have not even scored.

Their confidence must be rock bottom, whereas Nottingham Forest must be feeling completely the opposite - they come into this game on a real high after climbing away from the bottom three.

Forest keep strengthening their squad, signing Brazilian duo Danilo and Gustavo Scarpa this month, and it looks like Newcastle striker Chris Wood is also on his way soon.

Steve Cooper's side have only won one away league game all season, against Southampton at the start of January, but I am backing them to get a repeat result on their return to the south coast.

    Liam's prediction: 0-1
