Decent start for Brentford, who win a corner on the left. Mathias Jensen comes across to take it but he doesn't beat the first man.

Decent early chance for Villa.

Everton boss Sean Dyche, speaking to MOTD: "I like these 1-0 wins. A lot of work has been done this week and the players' honesty has been invaluable to us. There had to be a base to work from. Our plan? Stop it going in our net, put it in their net.

"We tried to plan five weeks of pre-season into a week. We gave the players a lot of information and they have accepted that. It's a starting point - that is all it is.

"The fans are going to be massive for us. I have been here [Goodison Park] when it has been rocking. It was rocking today. But we have to give the fans something.

"Of course I'm going to drive home and think what a great start but I'm not naive. We have to keep working and improving."

Liverpool haven't managed to have a settled team. The midfield is the big talking point, there is no freshness in the midfield. They don't play at the same intensity.

You see teams take the game to Liverpool now, pressing them, imposing their game plan on them and they are really struggling at the moment.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool are going through a difficult period now and he has to find a way to get out of it because they have to wait until the summer to bring in the reinforcements that they need.

There were people questioning Casemiro and they were talking about getting [Adrien] Rabiot coming in and different people. He has got five Champions League medals and he has been at Real Madrid and done so much. It was a little bit silly to question him.

Now we wonder whether he is the best signing post-Fergie. He's very important for them, he's enjoying his football.

Everyone is a fan of him, he's enjoyable to watch and he is the driving force in that Manchester United team and I think he just brings something that they didn't have before.

Casemiro has a drive for perfection and the will to win games and get the club back into the Champions League.

"They have been in a position where it has not been nice for anyone. I still believe we can improve with our play.

"It gives us a platform to move forward. We have crammed a lot in this week. To get a win against top of the league...we managed to calm the game down. I want to them to understand the basics of the game."

Applause has just rung round the ground for the families of the eight players and three staff members who died at Munich, who are in the Old Trafford directors box.

Flags are flying at half mast and 'Flowers of Manchester' is now being played.

Christian Burgess couldn't quite believe what he had just seen. His side, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, were trailing 2-0 and down to 10 men against RFC Seraing. Rather than try to limit the damage, manager Felice Mazzu made an attacking substitution at half-time that changed everything.

Kaoru Mitoma came on and turned the game on its head with a stunning hat-trick to complete an incredible comeback. A 4-2 win sent the newly promoted side top of the Belgian First Division and announced the emergence of a new star.

"He just completely took the game by the scruff of the neck and won it for us. It was like the Kaoru Mitoma show. He was unstoppable," says Burgess, an English defender who previously played for Middlesbrough and Portsmouth.

"He got the ball from deep and ran the length of the pitch to score the fourth. I remember thinking 'Wow, that was special'. That was when he announced himself as a seriously capable player."

Aston Villa’s squad redevelopment remains work in progress, and their measured approach over the last few weeks appears to be part of a longer-term policy. The room to follow that plan, rather than splashing out to fend off emergencies, has been earned by five wins in Unai Emery’s first seven League games. It is hard to believe, for example, that they would have sanctioned a move to West Ham for Danny Ings, without a senior replacement being assured, had they not opened up an 11-point gap to the bottom three.

Villa’s owners have shown over recent seasons that they are prepared to back their managers generously, and act quickly when necessary. They have also shown that they understand that a change of manager invariably means a squad rebuild too, so it will be no surprise if more extensive transfer activity follows in the summer, when there is usually better value to be had.

In the meantime, Villa have shown faith in the squad that has delivered that upturn in form. But the addition of Alex Moreno was notable, and there is now clear competition for Lucas Digne at left-back.

Jhon Duran is a longer-term bet, but following Ings’ departure the young Colombian may have a greater involvement in the second half of the season. Although only 19, he is at least used to regular first-team football with Chicago Fire, and his progress will be a particular point of interest in the coming months.

For now, though, there is more time for players already in his squad to show Emery why their position should not be a priority for spending in the next window. Morgan Sanson and Marvelous Nakamba may have already taken the hint, having been allowed to leave on loan, but the focus of the rest of the season may be on which players make best use of the increased elbow-room on the team bus. Bertrand Traore’s return from a loan in Turkey gives him an unexpected extra opening.

Villa have left themselves light in some areas for the remainder of the season, and could be embarrassed by only a small number of injuries. But if there are no emergencies, they may yet continue their push up the table. Ashley Young has been quoted over the last week as saying Europe ought to be a target.

At 37, he can be forgiven for being in a hurry, but as a whole Villa seem content to take their time and think more strategically – a privilege the Premier League rarely allows.
