  2. 'A lot of learning curves for me'published at 22:29 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    FT: Southampton 2-1 Lincoln

    Southampton

Southampton boss Nathan Jones to BBC Radio Solent: "I’m not happy with how tight it is, but Lincoln are a well-drilled side. They sit off and allow you have to ball and wait for you to mistakes, and are well-drilled on the counter.

"We needed to be more clinical and show more quality in certain moments and if we’d done that we would have won the game a lot sooner.

"I’ll take the win because that is the important thing. It is something to build on.

"There were a lot of learning curves for me. We are learning about them, we have learnt about them in training but it is games where you learn the real things. There is lots to improve on but lots of positives in there as well."

  3. 'The perfect game'published at 22:29 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    FT: MK Dons 0-3 Leicester

    Leicester City

Leicester City assistant manager Chris Davies: "It was a really good evening for us, a really positive evening. Having been a few weeks away from competitive games, it was good to get back with a good performance and a good win. The cohesion was really good.

"We had the majority of the squad with us in Abu Dhabi and at Seagrave [training], so there have been things we have been working on, and we have retained that fluidity. It was nice to see that.

"We were hoping that could be the perfect game for us leading into the Premier League restarting and it turned out to be that.”

  4. 'We're not suddenly going to turn into Barcelona'published at 22:28 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    FT: Southampton 2-1 Lincoln

    Southampton

Southampton boss Nathan Jones said: "We won the game. How many games have Southampton won this year? We're not suddenly going to turn into Barcelona."

  5. Lopetegui 'happy' with first Wolves gamepublished at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    FT: Wolves 2-0 Gillingham

    Wolves

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui, speaking on Sky Sports News, says: "Sometimes the style depends on opponent.

"We are going to have different opponents than today. We played a team playing 6-3-1 today, it is not easy. Of course we have to find a way around. They don't have the dangerous players we will face in the Premier League.

"They have been very focused and concentrated, trying not to concede set pieces. I am happy with them."

  6. Will this be Newcastle's year?published at 22:21 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

The Newcastle fans are desperate for a trophy and their team are now in the last eight of the Carabao Cup. They will find out who they face on Thursday, with the quarter-finals taking place in the second week of January.

  7. Leicester too good for League One MK Dons - read the reportpublished at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

Leicester strolled past MK Dons to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in their first game after the World Cup.

Youri Tielemans and Ayoze Perez gave the Foxes a two-goal cushion by the break before Jamie Vardy added another.

Chances were sporadic for the hosts at Stadium MK and they did not make the most of their few opportunities.

Premier League Leicester were a step above and their sharpness in the final third was too much for the League One side to handle.

Julen Lopetegui got off to a winning start as Wolves manager as they edged into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Gillingham.

The Premier League strugglers finally found the breakthrough on 77 minutes through a Raul Jimenez penalty after Hwang Hee-chan was fouled.

Rayan Ait-Nouri then secured the win in stoppage time following a breakaway.

Gillingham, bottom of League Two, were spirited but eventually outgunned by their hosts.

Former Real Madrid and Spain manager Lopetegui's first game in charge of Wolves had been a long time coming, after he replaced the sacked Bruno Lage in November.

Che Adams' double helped Southampton come from behind and avoid a shock against League One Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The win gives Nathan Jones his first win as Saints boss, after losing his only previous match in charge at Liverpool on 12 November.

His side fell behind early when Gavin Bazunu failed to deal with Ainsley Maitland-Niles' sliced clearance. But Adams scored either side of the break to see Southampton through.

The two goals represent the first time Southampton have scored more than one in a game since their win over Chelsea on 30 August.

It is the first time they have reached the quarter-finals of the competition since they lost to Manchester United in the 2017 final.

Newcastle reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a hard-fought win over Bournemouth at St James Park.

Adam Smith's own goal proved decisive for the hosts, with the defender inadvertently heading past Cherries goalkeeper Mark Travers from Kieran Trippier's superb delivery.

It was no more than Eddie Howe's side deserved with the home team creating the bulk of the goalscoring chances.

Newcastle will find out who they meet next in Thursday evening's draw.

Magpies boss Howe included goalkeeper Nick Pope, full-back Trippier and forward Callum Wilson, who were all part of England's World Cup squad in Qatar, in the starting XI against Howe's old club.

Switzerland defender Fabian Schar and Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes also began the contest for a home side that appeared close to full strength.

  11. 'It could've been worse for MK Dons'published at 22:03 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    FT: MK Dons 0-3 Leicester

    Don Hutchison
Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

MK Dons need to look to their next fixture. They're third-bottom and play fourth-bottom Forest Green. It's important that they try to take some sort of positives from this game. It could've been a lot worse for them. I thought it would be 5-0 or 6-0 but it didn't happen.

They can try and take a few positives. You can try and give your team a bit of confidence. They've done themselves proud.

  12. 'A big turnaround for Leicester'published at 21:59 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    FT: MK Dons 0-3 Leicester

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

It'll be a fascinating game between Leicester and Newcastle on Boxing Day.

It's been a big turnaround for Leicester. We were questioning so much like whether Brendan Rodgers was still going to be there and people were saying he was engineering his exit.

I've been really impressed with them and it should be a fantastic game against a Newcastle side who scraped through tonight.

  13. 'Proud of the players'published at 21:56 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    FT: Wolves 2-0 Gillingham

Gillingham have some quotes from boss Neil Harris, whose side battled hard against their Premier League opponents.

  14. 'A lot of work to be done for Wolves'published at 21:55 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    FT: Wolves 2-0 Gillingham

    Don Hutchison
Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Lopetegui will have looked at that performance and saw it wasn't convincing. When he does the analysis, he'll realise that Wolves need a goalscorer.

The talent they have at the back-end of the pitch, they shouldn't be in the bottom three. They should be a top eight or nine team in the Premier League. There's a lot of work to be done but that win should help.

    FT: Wolves 2-0 Gillingham

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

You would have expected more of Wolves. Gillingham just sat in, they didn't move. The domination was there from Wolves but you expected it to be more clear-cut.

  17. 'Wins breed confidence'published at 21:49 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    FT: Southampton 2-1 Lincoln

    Don Hutchison
Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

When you're playing your first game at home you want the win.

You want to go into the quarter-final of a cup competition because it gives confidence, it gives a bit of belief and shows the message is getting across. Wins will certainly help and breed confidence.

The only non-top-flight sides left in the tournament are Blackburn, Burnley and Charlton who face Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and Brighton respectively tomorrow, before the round ends in style with the all-Premier League clash between Manchester City and Liverpool on Thursday.
