  1. 'A really exciting time for the club'published at 19:36 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil is relishing a new era for the club following the takeover by American businessman Bill Foley.

Black Knight Football Club, of which Foley is the managing general partner, purchased a controlling share in the club after previous owner Maxim Demin opted to sell his 100% stake. Foley, who also owns NHL side the Vegas Golden Knights, will assume the role of chairman.

“It’s exciting for everybody, a really exciting time for the club,” said O’Neil. "Bill is committed and ambitious, wants to push the club forward on and off the pitch. There’s lots of work to be done of course, it doesn’t happen overnight, but a real good time to be around Bournemouth, for the staff, players and fans.

“It’s my first experience as a permanent manager so I’m sure there will be questions around your future constantly, but I’ve just come off the back of a spell where I was working week to week and there was absolutely no certainty, so it’s a slightly different situation.

“But the pressure won’t change. I feel big pressure to put results on the board and make sure we push towards our goal, which is to stay in the league and give a real good chance for all the off-field stuff and the development to happen smoothly while we’re a Premier League club.”

  2. 'Lopetegui shows power of the Premier League'published at 19:32 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    Wolves v Gillingham (19:45 GMT)

    Don Hutchison
Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm excited [to see what Lopetegui can bring]. It's the pulling-power of the Premier League. When you can get top guys from La Liga into the bottom three it just shows you the power the teams have got and the draw of the league.

I wouldn't go as far as saying this is a free hit. I look at this Wolves team and keep thinking 'how are they in this position?'.

There must be a lot of teams in the top six who must fancy the Wolves players.

  3. Lopetegui keen for first test at Wolvespublished at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    Wolves v Gillingham (19:45 GMT)

Julen Lopetegui is relishing the start of his competitive career at Molineux as Wolves prepare to face League Two strugglers Gillingham in the Carabao Cup.

Lopetegui replaced the sacked Bruno Lage in November and tonight will see him take charge of his first competitive match at Wolves.

And, in his first news conference, said: “I think they are working very hard, focused, concentrating, trying to understand what we want to do.

"They are understanding more about us, and in the same way us about them. We have to improve more in the next matches and this is the first important test because it’s the first official match.

“I know Gillingham eliminated Brentford and they are going to be a very dangerous team.

“In the cup, all things can happen because it’s only one match. We have to be ready, we are alert."

  4. 'Newcastle fans want to win trophies'published at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    Newcastle v Bournemouth (19:45 GMT)

    Don Hutchison
Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Winning trophies is where Newcastle fans want to get to now. Forever it seemed like Mike Ashley said we weren't interested in a cup run and it put a real doom and gloom on every competition.

Now, with the squad that Eddie Howe's building, I think it's now a time for Newcastle to go deep into this competition and deep in the FA Cup.

    Southampton v Lincoln (19:45 GMT)

Southampton manager Nathan Jones hopes to see his early work rewarded in the Carabao Cup as he makes a belated bow at St Mary’s.

Jones was unveiled as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s successor just before the World Cup break, with the Welshman’s only game in charge to date being a 3-1 Premier League defeat at Liverpool on November 12.

The 49-year-old former Luton boss finally gets the chance to meet home supporters with Southampton taking on Lincoln, of League One, for a place in the last eight.

“It’s a group that wants to get better and that’s the best thing a manager can have,” Jones said of a squad that he has got to know in unusual mid-season circumstances.

“There are certain things we need to improve on from the first half of the season, and in the time we’ve worked with them.

“I wanted to take little steps quickly, and hopefully we’ve done that over the four weeks we’ve had to work with them. Hopefully we’ll see some sort of seeds of that (against Lincoln).

“I’m a winner, I want to win games and for us to have that mentality. By hook or by crook we want to win this cup game and I’d love it to be an entertaining performance."

  6. Wolves set to sign forward Cunha on loanpublished at 19:22 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Wolves are closing in on the loan signing of Atletico Madrid’s Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha.

The Premier League club have been talking to the 23-year-old for a number of weeks, with new manager Julen Lopetegui particularly keen to get the deal over the line.

It is understood a verbal agreement has been reached, with Cunha now expected to have a medical. Atletico were open to letting Cunha leave after they were eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage.

Wolves have faced competition for the player but are now confident of completing a deal, which will include an obligation to buy in the summer.

Lopetegui wanted striking reinforcements for a squad that has only scored eight times in the Premier League this season.

  9. 'Lopetegui has a job on his hands'published at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    Wolves v Gillingham (19:45 GMT)

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

[Julen Lopetegui] has a job on his hands. He's had a lot of time and the little taster games to tinker with the back three, back four.

I still think the one thing is that he still doesn't know what formation, what type of set-up he's going to go with.

I think it's almost a free hit against a Gillingham side who are in disarray. It's an extremely strong side and he'll want to hit the ground running.

With this being the first game for the Premier League teams in more than a month, there's no excuse for not going with their strongest teams tonight.

So let's have a look at the team news...

  16. 'This could be a great story for MK Dons'published at 18:55 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

MK Dons v Leicester (19:45 GMT)

    Don Hutchison
Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Leicester are one of the form sides in the Premier League. Five clean sheets out of six games, the only one they lost was against Manchester City. They couldn't buy a clean sheet at the start of the season.

This could be a really good story for MK Dons. I expect them to go strong after their win against Portsmouth. They're not really in great form so they've got to make sure that they put the league form behind them tonight.
