The pictures coming through from Buenos Aires are reminding me of a really difficult version of Where's Wally? Instead of red and white stripes, it's a sea of blue and white stripes.

  16. Can Lionesses top incredible 2022 acheivements?published at 13:55 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

It has been an unforgettable year for the Lionesses.

Becoming European champions on home soil, qualifying for the 2023 World Cup with a 100% record, beating the world number one at Wembley and going an entire year unbeaten.

"You can't beat that, you can only equal that," said England manager Sarina Wiegman as she reflected on a memorable spell.

England's success has coincided with Wiegman's arrival and they are unbeaten after 26 games under the Dutchwoman since her appointment in September 2021.

They have already broken records, created history and perhaps changed the women's game forever.

So what next as they prepare for a World Cup in 2023?

    Aston Villa

Sam: In keeping with positions I feel Emery will look to strengthen, I think he will continue to endeavour with Pau Torres and a couple of rouge (maybe unrealistic and risky) shouts to strengthen could be Ounahi and Kolo-Muani. Both performed on the big stage and would bolster our options in my opinion.

Marc: We are in need of a top striker. I loved the look of Mohammed Kudus in the Ghana squad. Who wouldn't want him in their team?

Archie: If Emi gets sold, I would like to see Bonou. Boufal played well for Morocco, I think he’d be a class signing. Thuram from France looked deadly when he came on, Inaki Williams would be good with the pace up front.

    Brentford

Mike: Brentford won't sign players based on a good World Cup performance - our scouting takes far more into account than that and I'm sure we already have targets in mind. Having said that… that Leo Messi looked alright.

Ian: The player that I thought had a good World Cup was Morocco's number four, Amrabat. A combative midfielder, he currently plays for Fiorentina. As an old Brentford supporter, I remember a combative Terry Hurlock in the 1980's. Arambat is the same type of player. Brentford previously purchased Christian Norgaard from Fiorentina so the contacts are there!

Alan: Ounahi. Brilliant for Morocco would be a very good and cheap addition.

    Crystal Palace

Jordan: I would love to see Takefusa Kubo come to Palace and for us to play him off the left.

Carl: Amrabat of Morocco would be a really welcome addition to the Palace midfield, his energy combined with his disruptive play and creative ability would make Palace a top-six contender.

Pete: We need a right-back and Josip Juranovic is just the man we need.

It has been a big season already for City youngster Rico Lewis.

Last month Lewis eclipsed Karim Benzema in becoming the youngest player to score on his Champions League debut.

And Lewis, who turned 18 on 21 November, is pencilled in to feature against Liverpool in the EFL Cup on Thursday.

But those first-team experiences didn't prevent him putting his hand up to skipper City in their FA Youth Cup win against Blackburn last week.

"I asked to play," he said. "I told them (coaches) to make sure they ask because I want to play. I just want to play as many games as I can to keep me as sharp as I can.

"I’ve been on the bench quite a lot and not been able to play as many games as I wish, so any games I can play I’d love to do so."
