  11. 'There's more to come from Daka'published at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

MK Dons v Leicester (19:45 GMT)

    Patson DakaImage source, Getty Images

Former Leicester City winger Matt Piper believes there is "a lot more to come" from Patson Daka.

Daka, 24, has three Premier League goals in 14 appearances this season, just two fewer than he managed in the whole of the previous campaign.

"The first part of the season I think he's done really well," Piper told the When You're Smiling podcast.

"When we think back to last season when he was introduced, the pitch time he got, you can see there's a real player in there. It will take him a little time to settle into the pace of the Premier League.

"I like his movement, it obviously reminds me of Vardy and I think he can learn a lot off Vardy. I think he's said he watches him a lot. He can finish.

"I think there's a lot more to come from him.

"It's not going to happen overnight but I think what we have seen early this season has been encouraging. He has to keep his head down and keep working, which he will do as he comes across as that sort of character.

"It would be nice over the next five or six games if he hits the net a bit as it will take his confidence to the next level."

  13. 'He will divide people' - what to do with Saint-Maximin?published at 09:59 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

Allan Saint-Maximin's role in the Newcastle team will continue to divide people, according to former Magpies defender John Anderson.

Speaking on BBC Radio Newcastle's Total Sport Newcastle United podcast, Anderson said the France forward's talent is undeniable, but he faces a battle to get into Eddie Howe's first-choice XI.

"We all know the quality he has got," said Anderson. "He can dig you out of holes and you saw it against Manchester City and then against Wolves when he was having a very quiet game.

"But to become a key player again, he has to get back into the team first. They have coped really well while he has been injured and the structure is there for all to see.

"It's an interesting one and one that will divide people I am sure."

BBC Radio Newcastle commentator Matthew Raisbeck agreed, saying other players had stepped up during Saint-Maximin's injury.

"They are about more than just Saint-Maximin these days," said Raisbeck. "They are getting goals from other sources, notably from Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes.

"But then I think it's really exciting for Newcastle to be going into the second half of the season with him and Alexander Isak both back from injury."

  14. 'I hope we can get our rhythm back quickly'published at 09:55 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    Newcastle v Bournemouth (19:45 GMT)

    Newcastle United

More from Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on returning to action after going into the World Cup break on the back of six consecutive victories: "It's important to re-establish our momentum back to where we finished against Chelsea [before the World Cup break].

"We want to get back there as quickly as we can. It's [the EFL cup tie against Bournemouth] the first step to trying to re-find our form.

"We are keen to get back to competitive games. Speaking to those who have come back from the World Cup, the lads are keen to get our season started again, which is important for me to hear.

"I hope we can get our rhythm back quickly, get the feeling back. I want the positive feeling to remain."

  15. 'Mental side of being at World Cup can't be under-estimated'published at 09:50 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    Newcastle v Bournemouth (19:45 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on the availability of his World Cup players, speaking ahead of tonight's EFL Cup fourth-round tie at home to Bournemouth.

England duo Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier both played in Saturday's 2-1 friendly win over Rayo Vallecano, but compatriot Callum Wilson, as well as Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and Switzerland's Fabian Schar, sat out on their return from Qatar.

Howe was asked if they could feature against Bournemouth: "We'll wait and see. I spoke with all the international lads when they came back, obviously Kieran and Nick were very keen to play in the game.

"Those conversations are important because those boys have had not just the physical load from being at the World Cup, but the mental side of it can't be under-estimated, so I'll continue those conversations with the other lads and we'll see where we are."

  16. 'If we are the best version we will be fine'published at 09:47 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2022

    Southampton

More from Southampton boss Nathan Jones on his longer-term vision for the side: "It’s a hungry group and a group that wants to get better and that’s the best thing a manager can have.

"It's up to me and my staff now to make sure they do get better. I'm excited but I want to take little steps quickly and hopefully we will see some seeds of that tomorrow.

"I want us to be the best versions of ourselves and if we are the best versions of ourselves we will be fine this season and that is the point I want to get to."

Southampton boss Nathan Jones expects it to take time for his squad to play the way he wants, but he hopes tonight's game against Lincoln can be a starting point.

The Carabao Cup game will be Jones' first at St Mary's and the Welshman has every intention of progressing to the quarter-final.

"I’ve always treated every competition with the greatest respect and we will do that here," he said in his Monday news conference.

"It’s a game players will want to win and it’s a chance to get into the quarter-final which is never to be sniffed at. We will have one eye on Brighton but we want to win the game.

"It’s a big week but it’s a chance to win a football game. It will take time to play how I want but we are getting there. I hope to see a starting point tomorrow. The important thing is that we take a positive step tomorrow."

Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui was a bit vague yesterday as he discussed Raul Jimenez.

The Mexican has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer but Lopetegui wasn't up for talking about whether Jimenez had a future at Molineux.

Yet, even in stressing he wants to concentrate on the matches in front of his side, Lopetegui didn't give a clear indication of Jimenez's likely involvement.

“Raul is working in the right direction but he has to improve a lot more to be ready to start with us,” he said.

It is assumed Jimenez will be on the bench for the EFL Cup tie with Gillingham.
