Scott Parker is only the third English manager to take charge of a non-English club in the Champions League, after Bobby Robson for FC Porto and PSV and Gary Neville for Valencia.

Along with Chelsea boss Graham Potter, this will be the first time two Englishmen have managed in the same Champions league campaign.

This competition is just about the only thing that’s been kind to Potter since his arrival back in September. So much so that a win tonight would see him become the first English manager to record five consecutive victories in the competition. Those impressive wins against AC Milan and Salzburg in the group stages feel like a lifetime ago now. Since they last played in Europe at the start of November, Chelsea have won just two of their 12 games.

The paradox of Potter’s side being underdogs coming into this game may seem strange given their lavish January spending. But the domestic form and tables don’t lie.

Chelsea sit a lowly 10th in the Premier League having tasted victory just once in their eight games since the turn of the year - while their German hosts have won all six of their matches thus far in 2023 and sit just three points of the pace of table-toppers Bayern Munich compared to the 20 points the Blues find themselves behind Arsenal.

All of the stats point to a tricky evening in Germany - but it was just two years ago that the Blues upset the odds to go all the way and lift the trophy in Porto.

They finished 19 points behind leaders Manchester City that season in the Premier League - but snuck into the top four by a single point. Could victory tonight inspire them to a strong finish to this campaign?

Chelsea spent £288m on eight new signings in January.

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta said: "It's been a bit busier of a January window than before but in my role, I try to help adapt to the team as quickly as possible.

"In football, you don't get time to start your journey in a new club, country. So I have to help them settle as quickly as possible. I think we have exciting times ahead.

"It's a challenge and it's something I enjoy with my position. I try to show them what Chelsea is about and what we want to win. We have had a lot of new young players, maybe a different profile to the signings in the past, but it's all about the present and the future. And we want to show we're ready to win trophies."

Benfica reached the last 16 as group winners thanks to a 92nd-minute goal in a 6-1 win in their final game.

Joao Mario's goal at Maccabi Haifa took Benfica level with PSG on points, head-to-head, goal difference and goals scored - so they finished top on away goals.

Benfica have equalled the club European record of 11 games unbeaten - and have scored a club-record 16 Champions League golas this season.

Borussia Dortmund's England midfielder Jude Bellingham is the joint fourth top-scoring Champions League teenager - level with Raul and Karim Benzema on six each.

The top three are Kylian Mbappe (13), Erling Haaland (10) and Patrick Kluivert (seven).

Bellingham isn't 20 until the summer so he still has time to move up that list.

Borussia Dortmund are in superb form, winning all six of their matches this year and sit third in the Bundesliga.

Head coach Edin Terzic says it will be difficult to know what to expect from Chelsea after all their changes.

"It is not easy to analyse [Chelsea]," Terzic said.

"After the Champions League draw we watched their games but then in the transfer window there was so much movement from them.

"They sold key players, brought in other key players. Then we saw the official Champions League list but then there was the transfer of Joao Felix, for example.

"So you don't know how they will play. In defence they played with four but before also with three in the back. We will prepare for everything."

Chelsea manager Graham Potter has hit back at criticism that he lacks passion and does not get angry enough.

Rio Ferdinand suggested Potter needs to be like Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho after they were denied a penalty in Saturday's 1-1 draw with West Ham.

The Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham on Saturday, when they were not given a penalty for a handball by Hammers midfielder Tomas Soucek.

"Of course I get angry, I'm a human being," Potter said of the criticism.

Hundreds of grassroots referees have told the BBC they fear for their safety when refereeing and are dissatisfied with current measures to tackle abuse.

Potter said: "I'm careful not to get into discussion through the media.

"It's just that I choose to conduct myself in the way I believe I should. The same media are talking about me being more angry and then running stories about referees at grassroots level."

Borussia Dortmund v Chelsea (20:00 GMT)

Chelsea signed so many players in January that they have not been able to fit them all in their Champions League squad.

£35m France defender Benoit Badiashile, £30.7m England Under-21 winger Noni Madueke, £18m Brazilian teenager Andrey Santos and £10m Ivory Coast striker David Datro Fofana all miss the cut.

Forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was left out too, despite playing in all their group games.

New signings Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and Joao Felix are all included.

Only three players can be added to a squad between the groups and last 16.
