Ben: Uefa should scrap the second leg and automatically send Real through. Liverpool aren't going to recover that at the Bernabeu. They're not good enough nor have they been all season. Time for Klopp to go. This season is a total failure.

This was only the fourth time a Jurgen Klopp side conceded five or more goals in a home game, after Mainz in 2006 (1-6 v Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga), Borussia Dortmund in 2009 (1-5 v Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga) and Liverpool in 2019 (5-5 v Arsenal).

Karim Benzema has scored 19 goals in his last 19 Champions League knockout games, including 12 in his last seven.

Liverpool have lost after scoring the opening goal in the Champions League for the first time since 11 March 2020 against Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid are the first team since Opta started recording the data in 2003-04 to score five goals in a Champions League match with fewer than 10 shots.

It was a huge setback tonight, not just the defeat but it was the manner of it. You don't concede the goals they did tonight unless there are issues in the camp like they have at the moment.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti: "Winning like this isn't easy, above all because of how the match began. We never lost confidence and little by little we won control of the ball. We were efficient up front and Vinicius Junior produced an incredible performance.

"This is only the first part of a knockout tie, it's gone our way, but we'll need to imagine that in the second leg we'll have to suffer and work hard.

"Obviously we didn't expect to start like we did but at 2-0 down I thought about the City away leg last year in the hope that we could do the same - but it turned out even better. They were doing us damage down our left but when we were better in our attacks, we moved Valverde a little bit towards that danger and we then defended better.

"Liverpool is a great team which made us suffer in the first half so I'd say that, unfortunately, this tie isn't finished. No way. I want to praise Rodrygo because he did incredible work up and down the pitch producing just what I'd asked of him."

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger to DAZN: "It's crazy. I saw during the match that we still believed in it, but to come back like that is just crazy.

"We told ourselves we just needed one goal - and we did that quickly. After that we were back in the game. I've never experienced a night like tonight in football."

Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to BT Sport: "The beginning was outstanding. It was us in a nutshell. It was perfect, exactly how we wanted to play. The whole first half was good beside the goals.

"The first goal we became slightly passive higher up the pitch, we weren't chasing them. The second goal is slapstick. It shouldn't happen, can happen, 2-2.

"The first situation pretty much [after the break] they played a long ball to Vinicius. Not sure if it's a foul. How we defend that is not OK. Then 3-2 and that doesn't help against a team who are outstanding on the counter-attack.

"We couldn't get back on track any more. You need to play like the first half for the full 95 minutes but you need momentum back.

"At 3-2 it was the opposite. They became more confident and scored great goals. One was deflected. That's how it is. It's a strange one.

"There's a lot for me to take from this as well.

"We have five or six players and no challenge [for one of the goals]. That can't happen. We were passive until the ball arrived there.

"The only way you can slow down the game a bit is to keep the ball. We started the second half losing the ball in strange moments.

"This space [for the third goal] that's not possible but it happened. That's why it's 3-2.

"You have to keep the momentum and there we lost it and we didn't get it back.

"We will go there and play a football game. It will be a massive challenge. But we have to play in the Premier League first and make sure we learn from this game."

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois: "That second Liverpool goal was slightly bad luck that I messed it up.

"I had the ball under control and I wanted to pass it immediately but I saw that Salah had stopped so I changed my mind and tried to move it on to my right foot but it bounced off my knee.

"Vinicius Jr's goal gave us wind beneath our wings and then Alisson Becker had a moment like mine and everyone knows that, on the counter-attack, we're strong.

"We're never beaten, we always react. Those two quick goals did help us to do that. We were calm, mentally, and when we are on the rise we play well.

"It's my first time playing Champions League football at Anfield when fans are in the stadium and the fact that there was applause from Liverpool supporters for Luka and Karim just proves that people here know how to appreciate guys who are great players."

Liverpool were hopeless at the back. I was concerned after the Newcastle game because Newcastle created a lot of chances and it is because they are not good at the back. When you allow a defender a free header from a free kick, and your goalkeeper makes a mistake and Joe Gomez doesn't get close enough to close down Vinicius Jr it all adds up.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema: "We played with personality, we produced goals - we want this Champions League again. And that produced a match which was lovely to play in and for those who were watching.

"We started a little poorly. We knew that the Anfield fans were going to put us under pressure but after those first 15 minutes we saw the true Real Madrid. Football at this level is hard. They started better than us but this was a big game and we were ready.

"When you know it's a vital game and you're 2-0 down you want more. A goal can change any game and that's what happened from Vinicius Junior today. I want to thank our fans here, they were our 12th man all night. We'll need them again in the second leg and we'll need to produce a great match in the Bernabeu."

Inquests may be the wrong word but there would have been meetings around the form and what Liverpool needed was a big night tonight and they got the start to try and achieve that.

It is so not like the Liverpool of the past, there used to be no question they would see that game out. To concede five maybe shows where they are at this season.

Remarkably the stats were actually pretty even.

Liverpool had 51.6% possession. Both sides had nine shots. Real edged efforts on target 6-5.

On expected goals, the stat which shows how many goals you should score from your chances...

Liverpool actually won 2.01 to 1.66.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson to BT Sport: "Very difficult. It's hard to sum it up straight after the game. Mixed feelings. Frustration with the result.

"For large parts of the first half we performed well and were unlucky to be level at half-time.

"We made too many mistakes. Real Madrid punished us every time tonight.

"A lot was [down to] their quality. We didn't help ourselves for sure. We didn't defend it [Real's third goal] well enough. After that there was a few balls we could do better. The game went away from us at that point.

"The last two games we kept clean sheets. It's hard. it's difficult to come here and speak. Yes, they have a lot of quality. When you're not 100% defending they punish you. We caused ourselves problems at times.

"It's a tough one to take in the end.

"We still played a good first half. We were on top and created some good chances. There was a good chance at 2-0, a scuffle on the line. If that goes in it's a big moment.

"The second goal obviously is a mistake. The third we'll be disappointed with. That's when the game went away from us.

"It's [the second leg] still a few weeks away. We have to move on quickly. We have Premier League games before then so we have to concentrate on that, and cross this bridge when we come to it."
