  5. Infantino 'dismayed' at selfie criticismpublished at 16:27 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

FIFA President Gianni Infantino says he is "dismayed" after he was criticised for taking selfies at Pele's funeral. He has taken to social media to explain what happened:

"Just landed from my trip to Brazil where I had the privilege to participate in the beautiful homage to Pelé that took place at Vila Belmiro, in Santos. I am dismayed after having been informed that I am apparently being criticized by some people for having taken a selfie and pictures at the ceremony yesterday.

"I would like to clarify that I was both honoured and humbled that teammates and family members of the great Pelé asked me if I could take a few photos with them. And obviously I immediately agreed. In the case of the selfie, Pelé’s teammates asked to do a selfie of all of us together but they didn’t know how to do it. So, to be helpful, I took the phone of one of them and took the photo of all of us for him."

I have very special memories of Pele when I was teaching English to his staff between 2003-2006. I'll never forget the first day I was teaching at his offices in Santos. 15 minutes into the lesson, a door opened at the far end of the conference room. Ready to rebuke the latecomer, I was utterly dumbfounded to see Pele walk towards me, followed by a warm embrace. Special man who will be sadly missed.

Pele's funeral procession passed the house where his 100-year-old mother, Celeste Arantes, still lives.

Dona Celeste, as she is known in Brazil, celebrated her 100th birthday on 20 November - the day the 2022 World Cup kicked off in Qatar.

She was 17 when she gave birth to Pele, her first child, on 23 October 1940.

Family members say she has cognitive difficulties and is unaware her son has died.

"She's doing well, but she's in her own little world," her daughter, Maria Lucia, who lives with her in the southeastern city of Santos, told ESPN on Friday.

A stay-at-home mother, she dedicated her life to caring for her children.

"From a young age, she taught me the value of love and peace," Pele wrote on Instagram on her 100th birthday.

"I have well over 100 reasons to be thankful for being her son. I share these photos with you, with great emotion to celebrate this day. Thank you for every day by your side, Mom."

Outside the Albert Einstein hospital in São Paulo, fans started gathering when they heard the news of Pele passing. Some were dressed in the number 10 shirt Pele wore when playing for Santos. Outside a banner had been draped that read "Eternal King Pele".

This is a moment that Brazilians had been expecting for some time but also dreading. In recent weeks, Pele's daughter Kely Nascimento had taken to Instagram to keep his fans updated about his condition - every post or story fervently followed for any news of "O Rei" ("The King" in Portuguese).

When news eventually came of his passing, it was still a big moment. The hospital issued a statement confirming his death from multiple organ failure connected to his colon cancer but it was more than just a medical bulletin - it also said that the hospital shared the suffering felt by the family and everyone over the loss of "our beloved King of football".

That is a mark of just how important he was for Brazilians - while Pele was of course a footballing legend the world over, for people here, he was so much more.

The procession still continues through Santos, where thousands of people are still gathering, waiting to see Pele's coffin.

People are standing on rooftops, leaning from balconies and packing the roads to get a glimpse of the Brazilian icon.

It has evidently been an emotional day for many.

Aged 9, I watched Pele being kicked out of the 66 World Cup. Four years later he reigned supreme in the 1970 World Cup. I finally saw him live playing for Santos against Sheffield Wednesday in February 1972. For me, without doubt he was and is the greatest footballer ever. Messi has the skills, Mbappe has the athleticism and skills and Maradona had strength, determination and skills. Pele had all those attributes combined in abundance.

Whenever there is debate about who is the greatest player of all time, one name is a given on the list - Pele.

The Brazilian won three World Cups - the first at 17 and the last as the talisman, in 1970, for arguably the finest ever XI.

He scored more than 1,200 career goals and is the protagonist of some of the most revered and replayed moments in football history.

And yet, many will never have had the joy of witnessing him kick a ball live.

Following his death at the age of 82, BBC Sport has selected seven of Pele's finest moments to showcase what made the Brazilian so special.

To the people who think Pelé only played "farmer's league" in 60s Brazil, you're all wrong. He was participating and a leader in 3 world cup titles, and 2 times club world champion with Santos. A legend yet to be rivalled.
