Marcela Buono is a Santos native who now lives in Miami. She’s back for a family visit and wanted to pay her respects to the footballing legend.

“We grew up with him, he used to go to the supermarket here every day, that was normal for us,” she says. “He was always fantastic, giving autographs for the kids. He was an amazing person, an inspiration.

“He was a fantastic human being,” says former Santos Football Club President, Marcelo Teixeira. “He had a generous heart, not just because he was the athlete of the century but he was a simple man, he always looked after people in a really sincere, humble way.”

Brazil’s new President Lula da Silva also paid his respects shortly before the wake ended.

Brazilians queued all day Monday in the searing summer Santos heat, to catch a final glimpse of their King of Football. And overnight, the line grew even bigger.

Under a large white tent in the centre of Santos football pitch, the club where he made his name, the body of Brazil’s legend lay in an open casket, a Brazilian flag draped across it.

There were tears, applause and even some Brazilians falling to the ground in worship of the man who revolutionised the beautiful game and made their country famous.

“I had the opportunity to see him playing in the stadium many times in life,” says João Paulo Machado who lives in Santos. “He's the number one ambassador of this country in the world, in my opinion. If you travel abroad, the first thing people say is you are from Pelé's country.”

Another man, Rodrigo, had tears in his eyes as he talked about what Pelé meant for him.

“We cried when we heard he had died and I didn’t expect it to be so difficult,” he said. “We are really grateful to him and Santos. I brought my daughter and her friends so they can understand how important he was for the city, our lives and our culture.”

  6. 'Bellingham should choose Real over Liverpool'published at 11:44 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    Jude BellinghamImage source, Getty Images

Jude Bellingham should choose a move to Real Madrid over a switch to Liverpool, insists former West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker.

Both clubs have been heavily linked with a move for the Borussia Dortmund teenager, who starred for England at the World Cup in Qatar.

But after the Reds' top-four hopes were dented by Monday's 3-1 Premier League defeat at Brentford, Reo-Coker said La Liga would be Bellingham's best option.

"If you were Jude Bellingham, would you go to Liverpool right now with what you currently see?" Reo-Coker said on the Football Daily Podcast on BBC Sounds.

"You look at the other suitors – if I was Bellingham, I would go to Real Madrid. I would look at what Real Madrid are doing, what they are building, what they’ve got there, the young talent and what can be achieved, and I would go there.

"I would not go to Liverpool."

ESPN senior writer Mark Ogden agreed, adding: "No matter what year it is, what state they are in, it’s Real Madrid isn’t it? They are the biggest club in the world – other clubs will argue with that but they are.

"Liverpool are always a massive draw. But right now, for me, Real Madrid is the place to be. It’s the dream move for any player and he could dominate that midfield like Modric has for the last 10 years. It would be a great move for him."

Re 9:08 - He also said Brentford's third goal should have been disallowed when it was mercilessly obvious to anyone watching there was nothing wrong with it. Every time the result goes against Klopp he either blames the ref, the weather, or picks a row with the media.

    Daniel

In regards to Klopp complaining about the stretching of rules, we've all seen him constantly chatting and berating officials, the 4th official especially never seems to be left alone by him. Surely that's the same? Maybe he needs to take a look at his team rather than blaming outside factors all the time

Typical over-reactions from LFC "fans" and foes alike. We lost to Brentford during a busy Xmas period. So did the rest of the top teams when they played them. It's not a crisis that we sit in touching distance of the CL places with so many games to go. It's a mediocre season (which we have had before) due to injury and transition. We will still make top four and be flying next season.

  10. Have Liverpool lost the desire to battle? You tell uspublished at 11:15 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

Liverpool have decided not to "battle" and are paying the price - that's the view of Neil Atkinson from The Anfield Wrap.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast in the wake of the Reds' 3-1 loss at Brentford, Atkinson said: "It was dreadful. It was good for the first 10 minutes. They had a terrible 35 minutes in the first half against Leicester and then the remaining 35 of the first half against Brentford was dreadful as well.

"I do think Brentford play ever so well. They have a really smart granular approach to the game, they break it down into chunks and play it on their own terms. But I knew that before a ball was kicked, so Liverpool should have known that as well as they have lots of highly-paid analysts who work this thing out. Then it felt like Liverpool sort of stumbled into a mess.

"They were letting Brentford in, not in soft ways but ways that they were not engaged with the fact that this is a battle. What the Liverpool team from 2018 to 2020 was brilliant at was understanding the battle, winning it first. As it is at the minute Liverpool don’t seem interested in winning battles. They’ve decided to rise above such a thing and when you do that you get punished.

"The essence of this is Liverpool need to find a way to be more physically robust. If that means going into the transfer market so be it."

Don't agree with the anti-Liverpool perspective. Liverpool don't like the mild fouling of Brentford & other teams. They deserved a point against Brentford. Nunez is still good but not quite firing on all cylinders.

    Nick from London

People need to stop jumping on Klopps back. He nearly guided Liverpool to all 4 trophies last year. He will fix this team. He always does.

  16. Klopp can still turn things around - Zendenpublished at 10:28 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    BBC Radio 5 Live

And finally from former Liverpool winger Bolo Zenden on whether Jurgen Klopp can turn the Reds' form around:

"Firstly we have to say Brentford did really well yesterday. If we didn't have VAR it would have been 6-4 or something. So of course Klopp isn't happy, and then you get questions that haven't been asked for the last five or six years. He has done everything with Liverpool and transformed them into a team who won everything.

"All the teams that played them were afraid of this intensity that they've got, but at the moment they haven't got it.

"Can he change it? He has done in the past and proven he can do a job so yes of course I think he can. But it is still football and if results stay way it becomes harder and harder for a manager."

What next for Liverpool? Klopp has been stubbornly committed to one way of playing; but that doesn't work now. The press is weaker without Mane. Teams play through the midfield and the defence is exposed. Trent can't defend over his shoulder, which is targeted by teams. Gomez has to come in at right back, Trent into the Beckham role on the right and 4-4-2 system. Nunez experiment will cost us top four. That has to change now too.

  19. 'It seems like they don't even understand each other'published at 09:58 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    BBC Radio 5 Live

More from former Liverpool winger Bolo Zenden who spoke to 5 Live Breakfast about comments from ex-Reds defender Jamie Carragher, who said Liverpool were an 'ageing team coming to the end'.

"I wouldn't say ageing in the sense of literally their age but I understand what he means. When there is a team that has been stuck together for a long time you see cracks. We have seen a lot of cracks this season.

"But it is also due to the injuries they have had this season. They haven't been able to play the same formation a lot of the time. If you look at the back four for example they don't gel together or have this cement between them. At times it seems like they don't even understand each other. So they miss the chemistry to make it work."
