  1. 'The first half was appalling'published at 09:42 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2023

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former Liverpool winger Bolo Zenden on 5 Live Breakfast: "The first half was appalling. I thought Brentford did really well, though I thought Liverpool would have had a warning sign as Brentford have already beaten Man United and Man City this season, so they have made a mark already.

"I'm sure Klopp wasn't happy and must have said something at half time as the second half was much better.

"We know Liverpool have been off the pace this season and things haven't gone their way. But it was difficult to see how easy they gave chances away when they are normally so hard to beat. So it is definitely something to be addressed."

Everyone seems very keen to jump on Klopp this morning! He never accused Brentford of cheating, he said they took the rules to the limit with some grappling and holding. He is a bad loser, I'd be more worried if he wasn't! He acknowledged Brentford's strengths and respected the way they played and acknowledged they were deserving of their win. He also said his players needed to manage situations better. Liverpool were poor again, but no panic, top four still odds on.

Bazza: Klopp must be the worst loser in football. Brentford were the deserved winners last night and Liverpool were poor. Yet Klopp moans about cheating at corners when his team can't defend, and a goal not disallowed for a nudge when his defender throws himself to the floor

    • Liverpool have only won their opening league game in two of the last nine calendar years (D3 L4), beating Burnley 2-1 in 2018 and Sheffield United 2-0 in 2020.
    • Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez has missed more Big Chances than any other player in the Premier League this season (15).
    • Ibrahima Konate’s own-goal was the first time that Brentford had benefitted from an own-goal in a Premier League home game, with tonight their 28th such game in the competition.

    Brentford 3-1 Liverpool

Contrasting emotions for Thomas Frank, who was thrilled with his Brentford side's performance as they rise to seventh in the table with the win.

The Bees are now unbeaten in six Premier League games, a run that includes victory at champions Manchester City.

They have also lost just one of their nine Premier League games at home this season, to league leaders Arsenal.

Defender Andrew Robertson said Liverpool's performance against Brentford was 'not good enough'.

The Reds, who would have gone within a point of fourth with a win, have now dropped 23 points this season - one more than in the entire campaign last season.

"With the fans sitting at home or on the bus back up to Liverpool, it's not good enough for them," Robertson said.

"We've spoken about consistency and things like that but we're not getting it.

"It feels like we're one step forward and one step back at the moment which makes it hard to climb the league table unfortunately."

Ibrahima Konate's own goal against BrentfordImage source, Getty Images

Where else to start but the Brentford Community Stadium, as the Bees ran out deserved 3-1 winners against Liverpool.

Ibrahima Konate's own goal from a corner set the tone for the evening, before Brentford had two further goals from set-pieces disallowed because of offside decisions on video review.

They did not have to wait much longer to double their advantage however, with a mistake from Harvey Elliott allowing Mathias Jensen to set up Yoane Wissa before half-time.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain reduced the deficit at the start of the second half but another error late on, this time from Konate, let Bryan Mbeumo in to seal the win.
