  2. 'I am really proud of the team'published at 22:40 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Man City

    Southampton

Southampton manager Nathan Jones speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Really proud of the football club tonight. Proud of the players and the coaching staff for making strong decisions under pressure.

"Their manager is the most innovative, he will always have solutions. The changes we made brought energy and we saw out the game. We weren't hanging on, we were a threat at times so I am really proud of the team.

"The team hasn't scored enough goals. We have to be a more potent force. Sekou [Mara] scored his first goal and that is brilliant. We want to be a front-footed side that keeps clean sheets and scores goals."

On facing Newcastle in the semi-final: "Really tough. I watched the game here before my appointment, Eddie [Howe] has done a phenomenal job at Newcastle so it will be a tough, tough game but we have a wonderful match to look forward to here and then we go to St James' Park, it is a semi-final we have to enjoy it."

On Southampton's run of form: "The performances have always been there, they have been building and growing. I felt we should have beaten Fulham. Nottingham Forest had one chance and then defended for their lives and it shows we are in games all the time. it won't happen overnight, I am not a miracle worker, it will take time."

  3. 'This has to be our benchmark'published at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Man City

    Southampton

Southampton boss Nathan Jones to Sky Sports: "I'm really proud of the players, of myself and the coaches. We've gone through a lot recently, people questioning a lot of things. That goes a little way to justifying why we're here and what team we're trying to create.

"I'm really proud of the club tonight and how we've come through a tough time. It was the second cup win in a week and shows we're building something.

"The performance levels have been there in the last four games but we've given silly goals away and not giving ourselves a chance.

"Tonight we were excellent. It's been building. I've had three Premier League games. I only had one day to prepare for Liverpool, I'm not David Blaine.

"I understand people's frustrations but we're building. Rome wasn't built in a day. We are on the way.

"We want to be hard to beat. This has to be our benchmark, the level we attain to. We had a lot of good situations today. It's a step in the right direction."

On winning in the cup but not the league: "It's no different. Our cup ties have been against Premier League sides. Palace away is a tough game. Tonight we were playing against one of the world's best sides, one of the best managers of all time. We just need to transfer that into the league.

"I'm not getting carried away. We need time to change the direction of the club. The previous manager did a wonderful job but in the last year they've not won a lot of games. Changing the momentum of a football club is tough. I'm clear, I'm strong. I'd like an element of realism elsewhere. If we get that then we're all together and can do something here.

"I'm absolutely not dreaming [of Wembley]. I'll be up until 3am watching Everton. We have a long day tomorrow. I'll have about 20 seconds with a glass of wine and then reality hits."

  4. Dean Henderson's loan problempublished at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Nottm Forest 1-1 Wolves (Forest win 4-3 on penalties)

That draw means Dean Henderson will not be able to play in the semi-final due to loan rules unless Manchester United give permission, which I would have thought was highly unlikely.

  5. 'Chuffed for the supporters and players'published at 22:24 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

FT: Nottingham Forest 1-1 Wolves (4-3 pens)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Chuffed for the supporters and players. Lot of ex-players here tonight which we always like. The objective of the tie was to get through. I can't say I loved our performance, I shouldn't be too negative and won't be. But we have to play a lot better than we did over large spells of the game. The game was there for us to take advantage of Wolves.

"We felt ready [for the penalty shootout], we did plan and prepare for it with both Dean Henderson and the outfield guys but even with that it was still a bit of luck of the gods. Dean was fantastic in the 90 minutes keeping the ball out of the net and he carried that over to the shootout.

"In terms of result I said we have to play better. I think Wolves were good on the night and you have to respect that. I felt on Saturday we fell short and got knocked out so it was important not to go out of two cup competitions in a few days."

  6. 'The better team won'published at 22:22 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "The better team won. We didn't play good, we didn't play well in the beginning. There are many games you can start not good and overcome and we didn't do it.

"When you are not prepared to play this game you arrive one inch late and don't score a goal. When you are prepared you score the goal.

"Today was a bad night, the opponent was better so we have to congratulate them. To win games you have to deserve it and tonight we didn't deserve it."

  14. 'It was the manner in which they won'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Man City

    Chris Sutton
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It wasn't just that they beat Manchester City it was the manner in which they did it. They were brave, pressed Manchester City high and forced them into errors.

They get themselves in front, the performance in the second half after they went to three at the back was fantastic.

FT: Nottingham Forest 1-1 Wolves (4-3 pens)

Nottingham Forest are through to the League Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1992.

They lost to Manchester United in the final that year. Could it be a repeat of that final this year?

  17. 'We can take momentum into league'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Man City

    Southampton

Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu to Sky Sports: "It’s massive. For the whole team. We’ve worked so hard under the new manager on being hard to beat. We need to be a hard team to play against.

"We’ve been working on [defending] for the last few weeks. The players in front of me have been amazing.

"On the back of the last two results we can take momentum into the game on Saturday."

  18. 'A special night'published at 22:10 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Man City

    Southampton

Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse to Sky Sports: "A special night. These games are special to play in especially when you're struggling in the league. We knew this was a distraction from the league and a great showcase. We showed no fear.

"It's always tough when you're in the position we are. The manager has been excellent and has given us fresh ideas and new energy. He wanted us to be bold and aggressive.

"We have been guilty in the past of having a result at half-time and dropping off. We showed a different part of our game. We thoroughly deserved the win."

On taking this into the league: "That’s the challenge now. To put in a performance like that means nothing if we don’t get anything from Everton."

The big question now, can Southampton carry this form into the vital Premier League fixture away to Everton on Saturday.

    Sean

I'm behind Jones 100 % and just want people to give him a chance. We're not a big club. Desperate for a proven goal scorer. Fingers crossed we get over the line tonight.

  20. 'Jones took over an absolute mess'published at 22:03 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    FT: Southampton 2-0 Man City

    Chris Sutton
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Nathan Jones needs time, he took over an absolute mess. The negativity really took over after the defeat against Forest when they didn't have a shot on target. After the win at the weekend [over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup] there was still some scepticism.

If they can play like they did today with that intensity then they will stay up and it is a big if. But it is fantastic for Nathan Jones tonight.
