Southampton v Man City (20:00 GMT)

Southampton have just confirmed the signing of 20-year-old Argentine midfielder Carlos Alcaraz from Racing Club.

The fee is thought to be about £12m.

Saints manager Nathan Jones said: "Charly’s arrival is another major addition for us. There has been a lot of interest around Europe, so it’s great to get him in and also to have done it quite early in the month.

"He will give us a really exciting option and add a bit more creativity into the side, which is something that will be a real benefit to us.

"I know how determined he is to get started and to help us, so we’re looking forward to getting to work with him and we’ll also make sure he has all the support needed to get settled in here."

You can't really call it, Forest have picked up and Wolves have got a new manager who has gone in and done really well so it is a hard one to call.

Pep Guardiola has declared midfielder Kalvin Phillips "ready" to start for Manchester City.

The City boss said England's Phillips returned from the World Cup in Qatar overweight.

He has come off the bench twice since.

"I think [it takes] a bit of time for some aspects but he's ready and we are delighted about that," said Guardiola.

"I think he's an intelligent player - normally holding midfielders are so clever and intelligent - and has an incredible work ethic in the training sessions.

"He was educated at Leeds with Marcelo Bielsa, the fact of the commitment every training session, every game. So I don't have doubts about that - but of course there are patterns and movements, things that need time and games and games.

"He arrived this season and unfortunately was injured which meant he could not be there, but that's why step by step he will get it."

Southampton v Man City (20:00 GMT)

Southampton come into the game bottom of the Premier League on 12 points from 18 games but on the back of a rare win.

The Saints beat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup at the weekend, for only Nathan Jones' second win in charge. The other was against Lincoln in this cup.

Before that, he had overseen four straight league losses after succeeding Ralph Hasenhuttl as manager.

Southampton v Man City (20:00 GMT)

City are aiming to win the League Cup for the sixth time in eight seasons and the fifth time under Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola has won the League Cup four times, making him the joint record holder alongside Brian Clough, Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho.

"We won a lot in a short period of time and I’ve had three fantastic clubs - but I never forget the success belongs to the players," said Guardiola.

In the last six years only Manchester United twice (October 2016 and January 2020) and West Ham, on penalties, in October 2021 have beaten them in this competition.

  9. Team news - sweeping changes for both sidespublished at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Nottingham Forest v Wolverhampton Wanderers (19:45 GMT)

After losing to Blackpool in the FA Cup at the weekend there's no surprise that there's big changes to the Nottingham Forest team from that game as only Brazilian forward Gustavo Scarpa retains his place.

The rest has more of a feel of Forest's Premier League team as Dean Henderson returns in goal and Brennan Johnson and Morgan Gibbs-White are among the players to come back in.

  10. 1980 and all thatpublished at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    Nottm Forest v Wolves (19:45GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the City Ground

The Midlands rivals who meet at the City Ground tonight have history in this competition.

Wolves beat Nottingham Forest in the 1980 final at Wembley, when Andy Gray scored the only goal.

Given their respective league positions, if Manchester City win at Southampton tonight as expected, whoever wins this evening will be very much the outsiders for the entire competition.

Still, if you aren't in it, you can't win it. And both may benefit from an extra couple of semi-finals later this month.
