    Man Utd 0-0 Reading

David de Gea only had four touches in that first half, one of the lowest totals I've seen for a 45-minute performance.

One of those was an outstanding save though.

Wow! That is why we love this game. The first time Reading has been in the box. Really poor from United. De Gea saves the day!

    Man Utd 0-0 Reading

Nice United passing move in the box. Casemiro crosses and Wout Weghorst pokes a shot towards goal. It hits a defender and rolls to Joe Lumley. Good block, good save.

Paul: Once again VAR is not favouring United, it's like nothing has gone for us since the City game.

Johann: I'm a Newcastle fan but how is that offside, the defender played the ball and the rule was changed that if the ball is played by the defender counts as the last touch, no consistency, VAR needs a rule book at the table.

Despite Reading not being able to get out of their final third, they have been defending really well. Holding in there.

  8. Postpublished at 45 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Reading

Reading almost take the lead! Abdul Rahman Baba's cross isn't cleared and Junior Hoilett shoots from eight yards, well turned away by David de Gea - who could almost have forgotten he was playing a game of football.

The corner comes in and Antony shoots over.

  10. Postpublished at 20:45 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2023

    Man Utd 0-0 Reading

Abdul Rahman Baba is 28 years old and on his seventh loan spell away from Chelsea. Got a sneaking suspicion he won't go on to be a Blues legend.

Corner to United as Bruno Fernandes' cross is put behind by Abdul Rahman Baba.

  12. Postpublished at 42 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Reading

Reading are so used to defending in this game that when they come forward they don't know what to do. A Royals midfielder can't find a team-mate so United come again.

Richard: Reading defender made a deliberate attempt to play the ball - surely that's a new phase of play?

Eteyen: Was that not a deliberate action to play the ball by the defender, just like Salah goal? So how is Wout offside? These rules change week to week it seems?

Kit: Super confused by the offside rule at the moment. Surely the defender’s intentional playing of the ball meant Weghorst was onside?

Ben: How is that offside? Ball didn’t go to him and was then headed to him by defender? Seems to me that they change the rules every single week. Either that or no one actually knows the rules in their entirety

  14. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Reading

A few United players argue with the referee as if he's going to overrule himself and the VAR now.

  15. Postpublished at 40 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Reading

Bruno Fernandes finds Casemiro, who goes down under a Junior Hoilett tackle. The home fans want a penalty but the officials say no.

VAR has a little look and concurs. No penalty.

  16. Postpublished at 38 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Reading

It has been 34 minutes since Reading last attempted a shot in this game. It's only the 38th minute.

  17. 'It is offside'published at 20:38 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2023

    Man Utd 0-0 Reading

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

In my opinion, it is offside.

The ball wasn't meant for Rashford but he still took it.

There is a grey area at the moment though and it needs clearing up.

  18. Postpublished at 38 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Reading

The VAR call has not disrupted United's momentum. They come forward again but Marcus Rashford's cutback is cleared.

    Nope, as you were.

The goal is disallowed for a Wout Weghorst offside.
