Seems like a lot of money to stump up for a player who will return to Spain at the end of the loan. Are Chelsea that desperate?

    Mark, Swindon

I still don't understand the whole Joao Felix thing. He's cost a fortune for a five month loan AND signed a contract extension with his home club, so he can only get more expensive if Chelsea want him long term. I'm used to football being silly, but this takes the biscuit.

  4. Felix arrival key as injuries bite at the Bridgepublished at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    Christian PulisicImage source, Getty Images

It will certainly be interesting to see how Joao Felix settles in at Chelsea, but with both Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic facing lengthy spells out with injury, there is suddenly room in the squad for attacking talent.

Felix has already trained with Chelsea and Graham Potter is happy his new signing is match fit, so don't rule out an immediate introduction against Fulham on Thursday, assuming the paperwork has gone through.

Olijj: This deal is very odd. A loan with no real buy option as Felix has extended his contract with Atletico. Chelsea will spend at least £500k per game he plays for a player who doesn't quite fit their tactical setup. For Felix, he gets 6 months out of a club where he is not enjoying himself, but chooses to extend his contract? Can't quite get my head around it.

  6. Pursuit of Fernandez 'closed' - Schmidtpublished at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

In other Chelsea transfer news, their pursuit of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez is "closed", says Benfica manager Roger Schmidt.

The Blues have been in talks with the Portuguese club about signing the 21-year-old 2022 World Cup winner but have failed to reach an agreement.

He celebrated scoring in Benfica's 2-0 Portuguese Cup win at Varzim on Tuesday by thumping the badge on his shirt.

"I'm glad this question is closed and now we can focus on football again," said Schmidt.

  7. Atletico's Felix signs for Chelseapublished at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Just to recap, earlier Chelsea signed Atletico Madrid striker Joao Felix on loan for the rest of the season for a fee of 11 million euros (£9.7m).

Arsenal and Manchester United had been linked with the 23-year-old but he favoured a move to the Blues.

The Portugal international has also signed a one-year extension to his Atletico contract until June 2027.

"Chelsea is one of the great teams in the world and I hope to help the team reach their objectives," said Felix.

"I am very, very happy to be here and very excited to play at Stamford Bridge."

Manager Graham Potter confirmed that Felix had already started training with the squad but could not say whether he will feature in tomorrow's fixture against Fulham.

  8. Big opportunity for Fulhampublished at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Fulham v Chelsea (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Marco SilvaImage source, Getty Images

That is your lot from Marco Silva today.

Before we move on, it seems important to reflect on the Premier League table.

Fulham are seventh, on 28 points, after 18 games.

Chelsea - Thursday's visitors to Craven Cottage - are 10th on 25 points from 17 games.

It is a fantastic opportunity for Silva's side to put some distance between themselves and their West London neighbours.

Silva has won just one of his four Premier League games against Chelsea (D1 L2), though that did come in his only previous home game against them – 2-0 with Everton in March, 2019.

  9. 'A great chance for Vinicius'published at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Fulham v Chelsea (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva on playing without Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is suspended after picking up five yellow cards: "He will get some rest, but [Carlos] Vinicius will get as many moments as we can get him because he is one of our main options to start as a striker.

"It is a great chance for him but to also give Mitrovic a bit of a break. But he is still training well and these things are good signs for us.

"Hopefully he will be back playing his best for us in the next few games, but for now the main solution is Vinicius.

"I just want Carlos to be himself, not to try and copy how any of the others play. It's an opportunity for him to play with confidence and to show his quality."

  10. To stick or twist?published at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Marco Silva seems a little conflicted about Fulham's transfer plans during the January window, kind of like: "I don't like signing players in the January window, but I will do it, we don't need it, but I will do it."

It is that age-old problem of adding to a successful squad and disrupting a winning formula.

Think Faustino Asprilla signing for Newcastle in the 1996 title run-in.

The issue is, in the Premier League, if you stand still you are moving backwards.

  11. 'Certain areas we need to get stronger'published at 14:05 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Fulham v Chelsea (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva speaking ahead of Thursday's game against West London neighbours Chelsea at Craven Cottage: "We are looking to get some players in to strengthen our squad, but changing lots of things during the January window is not something I am a really big fan of.

"It's just if something went wrong for us, but we do want to strengthen our squad in certain positions. Clearly it is what the teams around us are doing, they are doing it with very high ambitions in my opinion.

"That doesn't mean we have to do it, but there are certain areas where we do need to get stronger."

Fulham manager Marco Silva has also been talking ahead of Thursday's game at home to Chelsea.

    His quotes are incoming...

  13. 'Pulisic a couple of months away'published at 13:55 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Fulham v Chelsea (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Graham Potter on his side's injury list: "Pierre [Aubameyang] is fine and he will be in the squad. Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] is also back in training.

"Christian Pulisic is not ready, he is a couple of months away, we think.

"Raheem Sterling is hopefully less than that. Reece James is also back at work."

  14. 'It won't take just one person to solve problems'published at 13:49 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Fulham v Chelsea (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

More from Chelsea manager Graham Potter on Joao Felix: "We have to fix the team, there's not just one person who can solve problems. We have to attack better, take our chances.

"But he's a top player, we know he's talented, there's no doubt about that.

"From a physical perspective we know that he's had game time, he's fit. There are always some unknowns when you go from one country to another but he's a confident player who can impose himself on the game.

"He complements what we have nicely as well, I think he will be able to play a big part for us."

  15. 'Our results haven't been good enough'published at 13:46 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Fulham v Chelsea (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

    Graham PotterImage source, Getty Images

More from Chelsea manager Graham Potter: "There's always pressure, and the higher you go, especially at a club like Chelsea with such history and tradition, and the demands of it, then of course there is noise and criticism.

"It's everything you'd expect but you've just got to stay strong and keep trying to improve.

"It's a difficult job. Look at my colleagues in similar positions, the likes of Pep and Jurgen Klopp got criticism early in their careers.

"Football is emotional, you feel all the pain and the discomfort and sometimes it's hard to understand why, and it's easier to blame somebody.

"It's about putting it into perspective and remembering how you got here. I do acknowledge that our results haven't been good enough, but we've got to keep moving forward.

"We know it's going to be a tough game tomorrow but it's a London derby, something we're really looking forward to."

Chelsea manager Graham Potter, speaking ahead of Thursday's Premier League match at Fulham, on the signing of Joao Felix: "He's a quality player, he will make a difference in the final third of the pitch and I'm looking forward to working with him.

"He's young, but still has lots of good experience and it's given us all a bit of a lift.

"I've been aware of the potential deal for a while but the injuries we've had maybe sharpened our focus on it, but it's nice to get him here and he's been training today, which is positive for us.

"We're still waiting for confirmation to see if he will be able to play tomorrow."

  19. Felix to wear number 11 at Chelseapublished at 13:38 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

We are just waiting to hear from the Chelsea camp, which has been bolstered today by the arrival of Atletico Madrid's Portugal forward Joao Felix on loan until the end of the season.

The club has confirmed that he will wear the number 11 shirt.

"The Portuguese forward wears the same number for his nation," the club said.

"The 23-year-old wore the No.7 shirt for Diego Simeone’s side in Spain but given that is currently occupied by N’Golo Kante, he has chosen to take the vacant No.11 shirt.

"The last Chelsea player to wear that number was Timo Werner, who departed the club last summer.

"Felix has signed until the end of the 2022/23 season and will train with his fellow team-mates this week ahead of our all-London matches with Fulham and Crystal Palace."

  20. Besiktas search for Weghorst replacementpublished at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

On that Wout Weghorst move from Burnley to Manchester United, via Besiktas.

While it has been reported all parties have reached a deal in principle, the feeling is that Besiktas, where Weghorst is currently playing on a season-long loan, are not willing to let him go before they have an alternative in lined up.
