  2. Familiar name signs pro deal with Liverpoolpublished at 11:51 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    Liverpool

Liverpool have announced the signing of 17-year-old striker Lewis Koumas on a first professional contract following some impressive displays with the U18s.

The name may well sound familiar - his dad Jason scored 10 goals in 34 appearances as a midfielder for Wales and played in the Premier League, starting and finishing his career at Tranmere, either side of spells at West Brom and Cardiff City.

Liverpool say Lewis can operate in midfield but it is up front where his real strengths lie.

"His highlights include a four-goal haul against Middlesbrough on opening day, a double against Manchester City and a goal against Dinamo Zagreb in the Premier League International Cup," read a statement on the club website.

"Koumas combines his goalscoring instincts with a prodigious work ethic and a desire to keep defenders under maximum pressure.

"As well as top-scoring for the U18s, he has gained valuable experience with the U19 group in the UEFA Youth League and stepped up into the U21s for action in the Papa Johns Trophy."

"I think [it takes] a bit of time for some aspects but he's ready and we are delighted about that," said Guardiola.

  4. Southampton to cause an upset?published at 11:42 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Southampton v Man City (20:00 GMT)

Southampton, who are struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table, will hope new signing Mislav Orsic can help them deliver an upset when they host eight-time winners Manchester City at St Mary's on Wednesday.

The Croatia international has been brought in to provide more attacking guile to Nathan Jones' team who are also likely to be encouraged by their FA Cup victory at Crystal Palace.

However, the home team will need to be at their disciplined best at the other end of the pitch if they are to produce a shock.

Pep Guardiola's side recorded a thumping 4-0 win against the Saints in October and have had a stranglehold on the competition in recent times winning it four years on the trot until last season.

The City boss was also able to rest the likes of John Stones, Kevin de Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Erling Haaland as they cruised past Chelsea on Sunday to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper wants to see a reaction from his side against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday following their FA Cup exit at the hands of Blackpool.

Forest were thumped by the League One side 4-1 at the weekend.

They host Wolves looking to reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and Cooper has demanded a response from his side.

"We let ourselves down at the weekend," he said.

"I really hope we can respond and do better in this one."

Both Nottingham Forest and Wolves are battling for Premier League survival.

  10. Have Brighton found another gem?published at 11:08 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Brighton's men's team has benefited from some shrewd managerial appointments, could the women's team get a similar bounce from the arrival of Jens Scheuer.

They are currently second bottom of the WSL after winning just two of eight matches so far this season.

  11. 'Itchy feet' as WSL returnspublished at 11:01 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

West Ham Women v Man City Women (Sunday 18.45 BST)

    Paul KoncheskyImage source, Getty Images

The Women's Super League is back following the winter break this weekend - and West Ham manager Paul Konchesky says he has "itchy feet" after more than a month away.

West Ham have not played since December 11, but will return to action on Sunday when they host Manchester City.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference this morning, Konchesky said: "It feels like a long time off, it has been itchy feet as I've never had so long off.

"To be honest the break has been too long, I would have liked to have played in the week just gone to get us in earlier. But sometimes rest is best, giving the girls family time, now we have a lot of games. The players are regenerated."

In facing Man City, West Ham will have to stop Bunny Shaw, the WSL's leading scorer with eight goals and two assists in nine league games.

Asked by BBC Sport how he plans to stop the Jamaica international, Konchesky said: "We're going to get a minibus and put it in front of the goal...

"She is fantastic, one of the main threats for City. Someone of her stature, she is always a threat.

"We will work as a team to stop the service to her. It is not just about her as a scorer, we have a plan to stop them as a team."

  13. Can Erik bring back the glory days to Old Trafford?published at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

Erik ten HagImage source, Getty Images

That stat about Erik ten Hag is seriously impressive. To win 20 of 27 games is a fine record for any manager, at any stage of their tenure, but to do that after taking over a struggling Manchester United side with a lengthy list of issues to deal with cannot be underestimated.

Manchester United have had many fine managers in their history, but have struggled to replace Alex Ferguson since his retirement in 2013.

Ten Hag has certainly hit the ground running, no other United manager has started better, but can he finish the job and bring back the glory days to Old Trafford?

Thumbs up for yes and down for no.

  14. Stat attackpublished at 10:42 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

I'm not always sure how much you can read into statistics, but by the looks of the ones below I think we are safe to assume two things:

    • Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has had a pretty decent start to his tenure at Old Trafford
    • Chelsea target Joao Felix has the ability to unlock defences

  17. Leaburn an option for Brentford?published at 10:25 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    Brentford

Former Charlton defender Steve Brown says that Brentford should target forward Miles Leaburn.

The 19-year-old has scored six goals in his debut League One season, prompting Brown to draw parallels with Ollie Watkins, who Brentford signed from League Two side Exeter City in 2017.

"I am surprised Brentford haven’t come down and had a look at Miles Leaburn, as that is the type of player that they go for, someone who catches the eye," Brown said on The Far Post podcast.

"He is young and will have a sell on value if they are happy to coach him up. He is not the finished article but has enough assets.

"Miles would be ahead of where Ollie Watkins was I can promise you. I am watching him and every week he is getting better and better."

  18. What next for Joe Gelhardt?published at 10:18 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    Leeds United

Joe Gelhardt for Leeds United v Cardiff CityImage source, Getty Images

Joe Gelhardt "needs to go and score some goals somewhere", according to the Don't Go To Bed Just Yet podcast team.

The 20-year-old featured in Sunday's FA Cup 2-2 draw at Cardiff City and has made nine appearances without scoring in the Premier League this term.

BBC Radio Leeds' Adam Pope says fellow forward Patrick Bamford is nearing a return to action after surgery, while Rodrigo is "building credit" following recent displays.

Both Bamford's availability and Rodrgio's form may well have an impact on Gelhardt's opportunities at Elland Road.

Pope added: "Swansea seem to be one of several clubs interested in him. [Jesse] Marsch won’t be drawn on it. And if they make a signing it’s even worse in the short term for Gelhardt.

"He needs to go and score some goals somewhere. His talent hasn’t gone. It’s just that, in this moment, it isn't working out for him at Leeds."

  19. Newcastle 'starting to compete with the big boys'published at 10:12 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2023

    Newcastle United

Newcastle are "moving in the right direction" but cannot be considered as favourites for the EFL Cup just yet.

That's the view of former England midfielder Steve Stone who watched his hometown club roll over Leicester in the quarter-finals at St James' Park.

However, with Manchester United and Manchester City also remaining in the competition, Stone thinks it's premature to assume Newcastle will claim the trophy.

"They can certainly believe that they are now starting to compete with some of the big boys for these trophies," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "A few years ago they were nowhere near.

"Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Man Utd are developing and coming of age and then you look at City and they've got such great quality."
