  2. 'I can't fault the lads'published at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson tells BBC Scotland: "We got back to the work rate to try to stop other teams scoring. We did everything we could to try to win the game. I can't fault the lads for the effort.

"We conceded at a very bad time. It just wasn't enough today but I'm happy with how we went about our business. In the second half we stayed in there. Remi pulled off a couple of great saves.

"We changed our back four tonight and I thought the lads performed really well. I would take that desire for the rest of the season. I hope the supporters appreciated the effort we put in today."

  4. Beale's delight at cup progresspublished at 19:43 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

Rangers manager Michael Beale has been speaking to viaplay: "I'm delighted to get through. We've had three games in six days. Fantastic mentality from the group. I'm delighted to be in the next round.

"It was a tricky tie. I think St Johnstone played well throughout and carried a threat. I knew we were going to have to use the bench. In the nine games I've had, six have been away from Ibrox.

"There will be some news [on transfers] in the coming days."

  5. Another vital step under Beale regimepublished at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

    Martin Dowden
BBC Sport Scotland at McDiarmid Park

There can be little argument that Rangers deserved to progress.

They controlled this, particularly in the second half, and had the chances to make it far more comfortable.

That will be the only frustration again for Michael Beale, one that might catch up with them down the line.

St Johnstone battled but can have few complaints. They'll now look to get their absent fans back onside and concentrate on their league position.

  6. 'Rangers lacking rhythm'published at 19:37 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

    Neil McCann
Former Rangers winger on BBC Sportsound

I don't think Rangers ever looked in total control of the match. As Mick Beale will say, it's all about getting through in the cup but you don't come away thinking that was a brilliant performance. We didn't see a rhythm.

  7. League to focus on now for sliding Saintspublished at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

It just wasn't to be for St Johnstone tonight.

While Callum Davidson had his goalkeeper to thank for keeping his team in the tie, the hosts had their moments that will linger in the back of the Saints boss' mind tonight. As the game raged in the second half, the hosts quite easily could have nicked one.

It's now just league business for the Perth men this season, who have now lost six games in a row across league and Scottish Cup.

  8. 'We are doing everything' - Barisicpublished at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

"The most important thing is we won the game and we are very proud," match winner Borna Barisic told viaplay.

"I'm very happy because of [scoring], but I'm more happy that we won the game. Scoring doesn't matter.

"I'm enjoying it under the new coach. I knew him before, I know the style and everything. It suits my style.

"We want to get to get this trophy. We are doing everything. It's never easy, but we have started very well and hopefully we continue."

  9. Beale bounce continuespublished at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    FT: St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

That's now nine games unbeaten for Michael Beale as Rangers manager. The Englishman has provided stability for the Ibrox club, and he'll be delighted on what could have been a really difficult night for his team.

    Happy Rangers fans?

  10. FULL-TIME St Johnstone 0-1 Rangerspublished at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

Michael Beale's side progress after a frantic final 10 minutes.

St Johnstone gave it everything, but it wasn't enough tonight. Borna Barisic's belter is the difference at McDiarmid Park.

One minute left as the game rages from one end to the next. Scott Wright is lying in a heap at one end, but St Johnstone played on, only to give a foul away at the other 20 seconds later. Bedlam.

    There's not much left now.

  15. CLOSE!published at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

Under two minutes of regulation to go, the ball lands at the feet of Nicky Clark on the edge of the box. The striker swings a boot with a snapshot volley, but it's right down the throat of Allan McGregor.

    That was a chance.

  16. Almost number twopublished at 19:19 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

That would have been that, but St Johnstone are still alive.

Alfredo Morelos latches on to a perfectly-weighted ball from Alex Lowry, but lashes well over.

  17. Time running out for hostspublished at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

  18. Postpublished at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

Jamie Murphy and David Wotherspoon are now on for Saints as MacPherson and McLennan go off. It's one last roll of the dice by Callum Davidson. It's approaching all-or-nothing territory now.

For Rangers, Michael Beale changes Ryan Kent for Alex Lowry.

  19. CLOSE!published at 19:13 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

Now it's Rangers who hack one off the line. My days.

Substitute Theo Bair swipes at a ball across the box. He gets just about enough on it, but James Tavernier is there to desperately hack the ball clear.

    Don't. Go. Anywhere.

  20. CLOSE!published at 19:11 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

And then it's off the line!

Ryan Kent picks out Alfredo Morelos with a tremendous floated ball. Unmarked in the box, he struggles to control the ball, but manages to crowbar the ball beyond Remi Matthews. It's going in, only for Andrew Considine to slice it off the line.

St Johnstone are clinging on here.
