Inter Milan are three-time European champions but have not reached the quarter-finals since 2011.

They have won once away from home in Serie A since 13 November and arrive in Portugal on the back of a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Spezia at the weekend.

"It would be great for the team and the club to get through," said Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu. "We know that this is a huge match, I know what kind of atmosphere there will be because I've played here before."

Could a former Reading academy player help propel Porto into the Champions League quarter-finals? Danny Loader, 22, has made 16 appearances for the champions of Portugal since joining on a free after his contract with the Royals expired in 2020.

The Reading-born forward started last Friday's 3-2 win over Estoril after scoring in the 3-1 away win against Chaves on 4 March.

Loader starts tonight's game on the bench.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was asked about Kevin de Bruyne's inconsistent form this season and what he wants from the Belgian.

    His reply was quite instructive.

"I’m not going to discover Kevin," said Guardiola.

"I like to see the principles, the incredible ability to see passes and make assists.

"But I like to think he will get better with the simple things. When he does them better, the rest comes."

My earliest memory of a big European night was at Maine Road almost exactly 53 years ago, on 15 March 1970, for the European Cup Winners Cup semi-final second leg. Schalke 04 stood between City and their first-ever European Final and City trailed 1-0 after the first leg.

City were magnificent that night, knocking in five goals with just a late Schalke consolation in reply. Although I was a young boy, I clearly remember the special atmosphere that night, it was like nothing else I had experienced. The crowd were more animated, louder and there was an air of expectancy that I had never witnessed before. I have no doubt the crowd played their part in City’s performance.

The Blues went on to win the competition the following month, claiming their first European trophy by beating Gornik Zabrze of Poland in the final.

After a 1-1 draw in Germany last month, a place in the last eight of the Champions League is the prize for either City or Leipzig on Tuesday. It will be a challenging task for City to overcome a Leipzig side who showed what they are capable of in the second half of the first-leg encounter.

Before this crucial fixture both Pep Guardiola and skipper Ilkay Gundugan have encouraged fans to play their part on Tuesday night. There have been some occasions at Etihad Stadium when the home support has been a little flat. I’m confident we can recapture the noise and atmosphere of Maine Road in March 1970 at Etihad Stadium in March 2023.

And, who knows, if City get past Leipzig, they can go on to claim their second European title.

Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has scored 17 goals in 11 home matches in the Champions League, scoring at least two goals in seven of those games.

The Norwegian has scored a goal every 49 minutes on average.

He has scored 28 goals in 24 Champions League appearances home and away. The fewest appearances needed for a player to reach 30 goals is 34 by Ruud van Nistelrooy.

However Haaland could fail to score in three successive Champions League appearances for the first time.

RB Leipzig have brought 3,000 fans with them to Manchester.

It looks like most of them are already in position.

This is the club's 10th meeting with English opposition.

So far it is four wins, four defeats and a draw - in the first leg of this last-16 tie three weeks ago.

Kevin de Bruyne says Manchester City have done well in the Champions League despite never winning it.

City have won six Premier League titles under their current owners, but have never won Europe's top crown. They have lost two semis and a final.

"If you care about the noise then it's going to annoy people a little bit as we've not won it but we've done really well in the Champions League," said De Bruyne.

"I know people base everything on only winning but I feel there's been a lot of circumstances in these kind of games - the Madrid game, the Tottenham game where we deserved to go through but didn't. These are moments in games where these things happen."

In 2020-21, City knocked his Borussia Monchengladbach out in this round.

The only previous instance of a manager facing the same opponent in his first four Champions League knockout stage matches is Frank Rijkaard with Barcelona against Chelsea in 2004-05 and 2005-06.

Manchester City and Leipzig have met three times before - and Riyad Mahrez (on the bench today) scored in all of them.

In the first leg of this tie he gave City the lead before Josko Gvardiol's headed equaliser.

In last season's group stages City won 6-3 at home and lost 2-1 away.

Leipzig have had a different manager each time - Jesse Marsch, caretaker Achim Beierlorzer and Marco Rose, who is the current boss.

Leipzig boss Marco Rose was rather taken aback on Monday when he was told there was a school of thought that Erling Haaland had reduced the overall effectiveness of Manchester City.

"He has scored 28 goals in 26 games," said Rose, who was Haaland's coach at both Borussia Dortmund and Salzburg. "If you take those goals away, where would City be in the league?

"He is one of the top number nines in the world and they are much more difficult to play against with him because you don’t know what they are going to do.

"It could get really, really, really good with Pep and Manchester City. If you don’t want him send him to me. I love him."

Rose was also asked about a conversation he had with Haaland at the end of the first leg.

"He said he feels good," said Rose. "He feels comfortable with the team and the fans and says he made the right decision to come here."

City are unbeaten in their last 23 home matches in the Champions League, winning 21 of those.

They could equal Arsenal's record for an English team - set between September 2004 and April 2009.

The last team to defeat City at Etihad Stadium in a Champions League knockout stage match were Liverpool in the 2017-18 quarter-final second leg.

Erling Haaland may have gone off the boil a little bit lately but I can't see any negatives. He's scored a bucket-load of goals.

He's the best centre-forward in the world.

City have set such high standards that if they aren't winning four or five nil each week then people see a problem.

Inter Milan touched down in Portugal with a 1-0 lead after substitute Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal in the first leg on 22 February.

Lukaku converted a rebound after his first effort had bounced off the post in the 86th minute at the San Siro.

Porto had a double chance at 0-0, but Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana denied both Zaidu Sanusi and Mehdi Taremi.

The visitors had Otavio sent off in the 78th minute for two bookable offences and could not keep Inter out.

It's a very strong City team.

I was surprised to see John Stones in because I thought Kyle Walker's pace would match up to Emil Forsberg and David Raum.

We should be expecting a very narrow and very aggressive Leipzig.

Porto are without 40-year-old veteran defender Pepe, although the Brazilian winger of the same name does play.

The Portuguese side, second in the Primeira Liga, are without midfielder Otavio after he was sent off in the first leg for two bookable offences.

Subs: Ramos, Portugal, Carno, Conceicao, Wendell, Franco, Martinez, Sousa, Namaso, Veron, Borges, Folha.

Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to score the only goal for Inter Milan in their 1-0 win in the first leg at the San Siro but he is again among the substitutes with former Manchester City man Edin Dzeko preferred in attack.

Inter, second in Italy's Serie A, go with Andre Onana in goal after Samir Handanovic had played in the 2-1 away loss to Spezia at the weekend.
