Max: Without being unkind it went wrong for Lampard the moment he was employed: inexperienced and unprepared for a job of this magnitude and a clueless board who's strategy is all over the place.

Sarah: Different Everton manager, same problem of scapegoating. The fans should oppose this latest example and continue highlighting (though less nastily in some quarters) the board's the main problem. I also hope some players will admit their own faults!

From one former England legend to another? You can bet Wayne Rooney's name will be linked with the vacant position, given his history with the club.

Is the former Toffees forward ready for a job in the Premier League or will the club's hierarchy opt for a more experienced candidate?

    Will Lampard be wanted elsewhere?

Frank Lampard took his first steps in management with Derby in 2018. In his one season in charge, they reached the Championship play-off final, where they lost to Aston Villa.

He replaced Maurizio Sarri as Chelsea manager in July 2019, but was sacked after 18 months.

Lampard took over at Goodison with Everton 16th in the table, six points above the relegation zone.

Everton had 10 defeats in the remaining 18 games of the season, but secured their survival with a 3-2 comeback victory against Crystal Palace on what Lampard called "one of the greatest nights" of his career.

Lampard won only 12 of his 44 matches in charge in all competitions, a win percentage of 27.27 that is far worse than his record at Derby (42.1%) and Chelsea (52.4%).

Benjymann: Feel for him, he did a good job last season but I fear we’re pretty much unmanageable at the moment. To have any chance we need someone with greater experience and better tactical abilities.

Andy: Everton fans were desperate for it to be a long term appointment. Unfortunately, he repeated the tactical mistakes he made at Chelsea, His record against teams in the bottom 3 was poor & his in game tactical management was non existent.

    Time for the full story...

Everton have sacked manager Frank Lampard after less than a year in charge at Goodison Park.

Defeat at fellow strugglers West Ham United on Saturday was Everton's ninth loss in 12 Premier League games.

They are second from bottom of the table with 15 points from 20 matches, above Southampton on goal difference.

Former England midfielder Lampard, 44, replaced Rafael Benitez in January 2022 with the team 16th in the table and helped Everton avoid relegation.

It has been a tough season for Everton fans as their side battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League - but there is optimism for the women's team, who are continuing to make strides.

Everton's men have now gone 10 games without a win in all competitions and defeat on Saturday led to boos at the final whistle and banners proclaiming 'sack the board'.

Harmed by three managerial changes and inconsistent performances last season, Everton were near the bottom of the Women's Super League before eventually confirming safety.

But, following the arrival of manager Brian Sorensen this summer, they are undergoing a resurgence in the league table and hope has been restored for desperate supporters.

Their latest victory -a 3-0 win over mid-table rivals West Ham- saw Everton jump up to fifth in the WSL table.

Cooper on looking to bring in a replacement for injured goalkeeper Dean Henderson: "Still something we are thinking about. We thought Dean’s injury might initially have been a lot longer than what it is going to be. He couldn’t have played in the semi-finals anyway.

"Unfortunately we were knocked out of the FA Cup so Premier League football there is a bit of a break. We’re weighing all that up and seeing if it’s right to go with what we’ve got. Wayne played at Bournemouth and we will see if we want to keep with that or if we make a change but we haven’t decided yet.

"Dean hasn’t had loads of injuries in his career and he’s still a fairly young lad, so we have to see how players recover from injuries. Some can recover a lot quicker than others. If he does great, if he doesn’t we will deal with it as it comes."

Nottingham Forest v Man Utd (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Nottingham Forest

Cooper on Manchester United: "They are dangerous in so many ways but we have to believe we can have a positive contribution.

"When we get it right at home it is a really tough place for any opponent to play. Some of the big teams always at the top of the league have come here and not found it too easy. We’ve got to understand why teams have found it like that and what we have done, not take it for granted and be even better at what that is.

"We’ve got to focus on what it takes to do well in the game, not the outcome, not the ‘what ifs’, just focus on what we are in control of."

More from Cooper on Nottingham Forest's history: "We embrace it. We try for it not to be a hindrance or an added pressure. We want to use it as a motivation to understand who we are and what we represent. I’ve said from the moment I walked in you can’t get away from the history of this football club and you shouldn’t. This club is what it is because of its history and we should always be proud of that."

Steve Cooper on Nottingham Forest's semi-final tie: "We’re really excited about it that’s for sure. To put Nottingham Forest on a stage of a semi-final of an important competition is right and it’s been a long while.

"We are really proud of the fact we can play on this stage against a really tough opponent in United. We’re really pleased to put the club on this stage again and we just need to make sure we do ourselves justice.

On Forest's EFL Cup history: "Even before this run we have been very clear about the club’s history in the competition to the players. I remember before the Spurs game we showed them of the history and I know it was a fairly long time ago but that’s why supporters will get excited about this tournament.

"We have to respect that and we would anyway. It’s obviously a different era now and a different generation and we are trying to create new positivity around the place and the League Cup is inclusive of that."
