The FA Cup has provided the only sparkle for these two sides of late.

Sure, Blackburn are still in the Championship play-off positions, but dropped points to Rotherham and Bristol City highlight an inconsistency in Blackburn Rovers and a potential opportunity for Birmingham City.

Only problem is, the Blues are just as bad in the league.

If you were a cynic, you’d be clearing the diary for a replay on Tuesday.

League One Ipswich have won their last three matches in the FA Cup, after winning just two of their previous 23 games before this in the competition. The Tractor Boys last won four in a row in a run of five between February 1978 and January 1979, one of which was the 1978 final against Arsenal.

Championship club Blackpool eliminated Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the third round but haven’t knocked out more than one top-flight side in an FA Cup campaign since they won the competition in 1952-53. They are winless in 21 away FA Cup games against top-flight opposition (D5 L16).

Standby for something fishy at Luton where up to 2,000 Grimsby fans are heading in the hope of seeing the League Two club beat their Championship hosts.

Grimsby has a proud fishing history and it is 34 years since their fans made national news by taking 2,000 ‘Harry Haddocks’ to their FA Cup last 16 clash away to Wimbledon.

And fans are again being encouraged to take inflatable fish to Kenilworth Road.

“We are proud of the heritage we have as a club in the FA Cup," says Grimsby CEO Debbie Cook.

" In the 1930s we reached the semi-finals twice and then in 1989 over 2,000 Harry Haddocks took over the terraces at Plough Lane.

"As this is the furthest we’ve been in the competition in almost a quarter of a century, we wanted to celebrate that achievement by encouraging fans to take Harry Haddock to Luton."

This is League Two Grimsby Town’s first FA Cup fourth round tie since 1999-2000. They last reached the fifth round in 1995-96 under manager Brian Laws, knocking out West Ham in the fourth round.

Grimsby have won their last three games in the FA Cup. The Mariners haven’t four in a row in the competition proper since February 1936 when they were a top-flight team.

On Sunderland: "It doesn't matter if you're facing a Premier League, Championship side... all of us know Sunderland and how they can be really well supported. It will feel like a FA Cup match against a club with a great fanbase and squad that wants to do well."

Bristol City welcome West Brom to Ashton Gate for an intriguing all-Championship tie having seen in-form forward Antoine Semenyo depart for Bournemouth in a £10m switch on Friday afternoon.

To make matters worse for Robins fans, the Baggies have a perfect record against City in the FA Cup, winning all three of their previous encounters – most recently in a third round replay at Ashton Gate in 2015/16.

Carlos Corberan’s side also enjoyed a 2-0 success at the Robins in the league on Boxing Day thanks to goals from Matt Phillips and Brandon Thomas-Asante, though Nigel Pearson’s men did win by the same scoreline at the Hawthorns in October through Joe Williams and Nakhi Wells.

The Baggies have only failed to score in one of their last 19 FA Cup ties while Bristol City haven’t allowed more than a single goal in any of their last 11 matches in the competition - which contributed to them making the fifth round in two of the past four seasons.

Though they are 17th in the Championship, City are unbeaten in six in all competitions since that festive defeat to Pearson's former employers and overcame Swansea in a third round replay through Sam Bell’s extra-time strike.

Though they needed two attempts to get past non-league Chesterfield in the last round and went down to leaders Burnley last time out in the league, Albion have won 10 of their last 13 in total and are only three points adrift of third-placed Watford in an incredibly tight top-half.
