  1. Bye for nowpublished at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

So that's all from us on today's reaction to the deadline day deals. Thanks for your comments and for voting on who you think was the best January signing - Leandro Trossard came out on top.

We'll be back later for live text commentary on Manchester United's EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest (here from 19:30 GMT).

Until then, we'll leave you with some of today's top stories:

  2. Phil McNulty's verdict on the big deadline day dealspublished at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

An unprecedented transfer window closed with a record £815m January spend and Chelsea's British record £107m signing of Enzo Fernandez.

At the other end of the scale, struggling Everton spent nothing despite being rooted in the relegation zone - only increased the sense of uncertainty around Goodison Park.

It was the traditional transfer deadline day full of intrigue and late deals - so what were the big questions to take away? Our very own Phil McNulty answers them all right here.

I think Dyche has made a clever move that's a win-win for him. If he keeps Everton up he improves his reputation massively. If he doesn't then no-one expected him to do it anyway and another Prem club will come calling for him. Either way he moves himself forward.

  4. Everton lurching into 'deep crisis' after not making a single January signingpublished at 14:29 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Everton ushered in 2023 with more flesh on the bones of their much-touted strategic review, which they boasted included a "120-point action plan for our footballing operations strategy."

In reality, the action plan involved pretty much the same points that resulted in the review being commissioned in the first place - namely sack a manager then draft in his replacement with little or no time to bring any new faces into an Everton team facing a relegation scrap.

The time can be changed from January 2022 to January 2023, the names can be juggled from Rafael Benitez to Frank Lampard to Sean Dyche, but the song remains the same as Everton lurch through more chaos and dysfunction into deep crisis.

And for all the 120 points contained in the action plan, which Everton chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale claimed would enhance the club's approach in all areas including recruitment, they were the only club in the Premier League unable to recruit a player in the January transfer window.

If there was an action plan, it does not appear to have included strengthening a squad not fit for purpose.

  5. Vote: Who's the best January transfer window signing?published at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

So, our vote asking who the best January transfer window signing has ended.

And it's Leandro Trossard, which could be a good shout, given he appears to be walking into the best Arsenal squad we've seen since the 'invincibles' years.

Enzo Fernandez being beaten by new Chelsea team-mate Mykhailo Mudryk raises an eyebrow - at least down at Stamford Bridge it might.

And poor old Victor Kristiansen hit 0% - which now means he'll score four at Villa Park on Saturday!!

Portuguese journalist Cesar Luis Merlo has tweeted a picture of Enzo Fernandez on a plane, saying that the new Chelsea midfielder is "already on his way to London to sign his contract with Chelsea along with his agent Uriel Parez".

  9. 'Let the press not stain what we built together' - Fernandez to Benfica fanspublished at 14:09 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

Chelsea's new British record signing Enzo Fernandez, 22, has delivered a message on Instagram to Benfica supporters following his departure from the Portuguese club.

The Argentina World Cup winner signed for Benfica from River Plate in July 2022 for 10m euros but arrived at Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day in a £107m deal.

Here is a translation of his message to the Benfica fans: "Much obliged Benfiquistas. We wanted to thank my family for all the love received in these five months, I am grateful to God for giving me the opportunity to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, where I enjoyed every moment to the fullest and always gave my best.

"Let the press not stain what we built together because it was something wonderful that I had never imagined. Thanks to all the collaborators who worked hard to make the institution much bigger than it is. Thanks to my colleagues for always treating me in the best way and making me feel at home.

"I'm grateful to the club's leadership and especially to [Benfica coach] Roger Schmidt, to all your work staff for the trust and daily respect, I was very happy. Thank you Benfica, I will always carry you in my heart."

Steve: Seems a certain bitterness/jealousy against Chelsea, as usual, because of the long contracts. Some clubs give 6 months, some 3 years, some 5 years so what's wrong with longer ones? Contracts mean nothing.

  12. Caicedo returns to Brighton trainingpublished at 13:57 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo returned to training as planned today.

Caicedo was told to stay away from the club on Saturday after he posted on social media, asking to be allowed to leave.

Arsenal and Chelsea both had bids turned down for the Ecuador international, 21.

Brighton told Arsenal directly they weren’t interested in selling Caicedo and they were wasting their time.

Tam: Naive to say Chelsea buying Fernández based off hardly any European football is crazy. Risky, yes, But big clubs have massive scouting networks that have watched these players for years. Just because you hadn't heard of him before the world cup doesn't mean he's not quality.

More from Republic of Ireland defender Matt Doherty on his move from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid: "I have supported Atletico Madrid for a long time - I like the family atmosphere the club has, as well as the link between the players, coach and fans.

"The way Atletico have played over time, I have always been an admirer, even when they played in the Champions League against English opposition.

"I always admired how passionate the fans were and how the coach set his teams up. They have always been so difficult to beat and it is an honour for me to be here."

  16. Brighton thwart FA Cup ticket scampublished at 13:44 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Brighton blocked 150 mostly Liverpool fans getting entry to the home section of the Amex Stadium for last weekend’s FA Cup fourth round tie after the Premier League club uncovered a scam involving ticket touts.

They discovered touts had set up multiple fake accounts to buy tickets for the game from the club and then resell for up to £250.

Once the club realised what was happening, they blocked the tickets, so the people holding them were unable to get into the stadium to watch the game, which Brighton won 2-1.

“It's an absolutely shameless exploitation of football fans,” said Brighton’s head of supporter services Jenny Gower. “Those who have fallen victim to this scam should contact their banks or credit card company to recover their funds.

“We understand that there are fans who are desperate to see their team but they were being charged up to £250 for tickets, which were essentially worthless.”

  17. 'An opportunity for me to improve myself'published at 13:39 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Atletico Madrid

    Matt DohertyImage source, Getty Images

Atletico Madrid have unveiled new signing Matt Doherty in a live broadcast on social media.

Tottenham released the 31-year-old Republic of Ireland defender on transfer deadline day, allowing him to join Diego Simeone's La Liga side on a six-month contract.

"It's an opportunity for me to improve myself," Doherty told the club website. "I have been lucky to play under some world-class managers and here I get the chance to learn under one of the world's best.

"Initially it is for six months, but if I continue to do well for the club let's see what happens going forwards."

On his first meeting with Simeone: "As you know, he does not speak much English, so my message to him was simple - I am here and ready to play.

"I am fit and ready to play on the left, the right or in the middle, wherever he needs me.

"He knows I will be working as hard as possible for him, for the club and my team-mates. I am ready to play for him and the team."

As a Bournemouth fan I’m obviously biased, but I’m surprised at the lack of coverage compared to the big six. This has been our best transfer windows yet and the same can also be said for our south coast neighbours. As much as I want Saints to go down, I think they have made some great additions and will be safe (fingers crossed alongside us).

  19. Sabitzer will have to wait for Man Utd debutpublished at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

Man Utd v Nottm Forest (20:00 GMT; Agg: 3-0)

    Manchester United

Manchester United have teased their supporters with a possible early sighting of new loan signing Marcel Sabitzer at Old Trafford later.

But the 28-year-old Austrian midfielder, who arrived from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day, will only be given a watching brief as he waits on the completion of his work visa.

"Sabitzer will not be in Erik ten Hag’s squad for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest because he is still completing his visa process," said the club.

"However, Marcel is expected to watch our much-anticipated cup tie at the Theatre of Dreams as a spectator, so look out for his possible attendance in the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand this evening."

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United have agreed a novel loan deal with local National League side Altrincham.

United youngsters Sonny Aljofree, Joe Hugill and Maxi Oyedele have signed for Altrincham until the end of the season.

However, in addition to some sessions at Altrincham, they will continue to train with United's Under-21 and Under-18 squads at Carrington, with their individual schedules arranged on a weekly basis.

Oyedele has already featured for the Robins against promotion chasing Chesterfield.
