Man Utd v Nottm Forest (20:00 GMT; Agg: 3-0)

    Manchester United

Forwards Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial return to the Manchester United squad for Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

England international Sancho, who has not played since October because of "physical and mental issues", resumed first-team training last week.

Martial suffered an injury against Manchester City on 14 January. United beat Forest 3-0 at the City Ground in the first leg last week.

The hosts are without midfielder Christian Eriksen, who was ruled out until at least late April on Tuesday.

Scott McTominay - absent from Saturday's FA Cup fourth-round win over Reading with a "small problem" - again misses out.

Defenders Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot, both of whom did not feature against Reading, are doubtful.

The 7th most expensive transfer ever off the back of barely a year in European football and a good World Cup? Football is losing its mind. What Chelsea are doing isn't even football anymore. Makes me sick.

    Jamie, West Ham

Enzo Fernandez might become a star but my main issue is that Chelsea are making a mockery of Financial Fair Play with these ludicrously long contracts. FFP isn't fit for purpose...

    Anon

I don't think the Premier League transfer spending record is anything to boast about, it's deeply worrying for long-term sustainability across all leagues, and the tiny spend of PL clubs' acquisitions coming from the English Football League is shameful.

  4. Biggest January signings (part 2)published at 12:59 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

There was big money spent among the Premier League's current bottom-half sides too, with Leeds United signing French forward Georginio Rutter, 20, from Hoffenheim for a club record 40m euros (£36m).

Bournemouth also recruited Burkina Faso winger Dango Ouattara from Lorient for around £20m and Leicester paid £17m for defender Victor Kristiansen.

Following the £15m sale of Danny Ings to West Ham, Aston Villa signed teenage Colombia striker Jhon Duran from Chicago Fire for £18m.

The case of Jorginho signing by Arsenal considered as underwhelming is a bit rich. This man can bring additional strength to the team already doing miracles this season.

Chelsea's deal for Enzo Fernandez was a fitting end to another astonishing window. The Blues also agreed an £89m deal with Shakhtar Donetsk for 22-year-old Ukraine forward Mykhailo Mudryk earlier in January.

In addition to their deadline day signing of Jorginho, Arsenal signed Belgium striker Leandro Trossard from Brighton for £21m plus add-ons, along with Jakub Kiwior from Serie A side Spezia for 20m euros (£17.6m).

Elsewhere, Liverpool agreed a deal worth 40-50m euros (£35.4m-£44.3m) to sign Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo, 23, from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.

And Newcastle United's signing of 21-year-old Anthony Gordon from Everton could eventually be worth £45m.

Man Utd v Nottm Forest (20:00 GMT; Agg: 3-0)

    Nottingham Forest

Jonjo Shelvey won't be available for new club Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford later and their boss Steve Cooper admits it is a tall order to overturn United's first-leg advantage and get to Wembley.

"It's an incredibly difficult task and it'd be wrong to say otherwise," he said. "We won't be going into the game really disheartened, but instead have to treat it for what it is.

"This is a semi-final, a stage the club has not been on for a while. We have to do our best to do ourselves, the club and the supporters justice, and that is all we are thinking about."

Jonjo Shelvey waved farewell to the Newcastle fans at Tuesday's game and he has now written this message for the club's website following his transfer to Nottingham Forest: "I never thought I'd find myself typing this out, but my time at Newcastle has come to an end.

"I would just like to take this opportunity to say thank you to every one of you fans that has welcomed me and my family to the city, and to this amazing football club.

"I had been at Newcastle for seven years and it's been the most amazing time I've had in football so far. I will miss the atmosphere so much.

"I had to take this opportunity for myself. I've made so many friends for life on and off the pitch while I was in your great city. Two of my children were born in Newcastle so the Geordies will remain part of our lives forever."

  10. Chelsea winger Ziyech's loan move to PSG blockedpublished at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech's proposed loan move to Paris St-Germain has been blocked by France's governing body, the LFP. A deal was agreed before the French deadline for the 29-year-old.

But PSG sources were critical of Chelsea's conduct, claiming required paperwork was not submitted on time.

Ziyech was in Paris expecting a deal to be confirmed but the registration was not completed and so he will return to Chelsea for the rest of the season.

BBC Sport understand the player contacted Chelsea owner Todd Boehly directly in an effort to resolve the matter, but his pleas were ultimately unsuccessful. The LFP dismissed PSG's appeal this morning.

The fact that people are condemning Newcastle because of the new ownership is disappointing. They have got to remember we spent years in and around the relegation zone with a drastically under-funded team due to an owner who did more damage than he ever did good.

Why does it matter the Toon are owned by Saudis? If it was my club I would want to win no matter. People need to get over the fact who owns the Toon.

Richard: Last time we went to Wembley for a final we all just knew we were going to lose but we went and sang and cheered all the same. This time, though, is very, very different. We will go to the final with a real belief that we can win. If the players stay fit we will have a chance. It will be a very even game. Two very clever, astute, modern managers.

Paul: Can't wait to see my 80-year-old dad's face when he gets his ticket for the final! He never thought the good times for the Toon were coming back and he's loving it!

Anth: A great result for everyone associated with The Toon. What makes it more special is it has been achieved playing creative, attacking and entertaining football. This is one very proud and happy member of the Toon Army!

Liam: I remember the cup final losses in the late 90's and they were absolute heartbreak. The team just went downhill from then until Sir Bobby came in. This time though it just feels different, we are not fearful of Man Utd now and honestly believe we are a better team than them. I would love it, love it if we beat them.

Marshy: Never been more happy. So proud of Sean Longstaff for working so hard and living our dream. I never cared about the League Cup before, but now this feels like the beginning of something special.

@Mike 9.49 - Saudi-owned Newcastle £200 million over 2 windows. Man Utd £385 million over 2 windows. Newcastle are definitely underdogs.

    Ken, Newcastle

@ Mike at 9.49 - Newcastle's squad has been chronically underinvested in for years and the money spent so far hasn't even brought us close to what other mid-table teams have spent over the last 5 years, never mind the top 6. The Saudi benefits haven't even started yet, this is all Eddie Howe.

  18. Why new Man Utd loanee Sabitzer fell out of favour at Bayernpublished at 11:43 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

Manchester United's loan move for Bayern Munich's Marcel Sabitzer on transfer deadline day was another of the more surprising deals from the January window.

United manager Erik ten Hag was forced into a late foray into the market by Tuesday's news that Christian Eriksen was out for at least three months with an ankle injury, as he quickly set his sights on Sabitzer - a player the club has been tracking for a long time.

But why has the 28-year-old Austrian international been identified as the man to plug the gap at Old Trafford and can Bayern's fourth-choice midfielder flourish as Manchester United look to secure a top-four finish?

German football writer Constantin Eckner explains all here.

  20. Cancelo had become 'disinterested, deactivated' at Man Citypublished at 11:29 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Guillem Balague
    Spanish football journalist

City found out early on [during his first season] that the player did not happily accept being on the bench...in the World Cup, he did show his other face again. When not chosen to start, he was a disruptive presence. Lost interest, clearly upset, seemed not to listen to manager chats, did not seem focused in training…all that happened in the last few weeks with Pep [Guardiola] when it became clearer after the WC he was not an automatic first choice. [He was] disinterested, deactivated. He would talk loudly about his situation, incapable of dealing with it.

His team-mates would try to talk him out of his attitude with no success. A lot of what Pep mentioned about the side in recent press conferences (lack of hunger, etc) was referred to some players, including him. Every season Pep would like to replace 4/5 of the key 15/16 he uses regularly. He could be one of them if things do not change.

The relationship between Pep and him has not broken down fully but he has been allowed to leave for six months to see if it can be recovered at the levels of confidence and attitude necessary to stay as a City player.
