  1. 'Still waiting on Fernandez confirmation from Chelsea'published at 08:28 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport football reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live

Chelsea have not actually confirmed the signing of Enzo Fernandez yet. Benfica did put out a statement last night saying an agreement had been reached, which we already knew, and that amounted to £107m.

But Chelsea have not confirmed it on their social media yet and they have not confirmed it on their website, either.

We are still waiting for that, although we have no reason to think that the deal won't go through.

  2. Forest clinch three late deals on deadline daypublished at 08:25 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest got a few deals done late on deadline day, signing midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and defender Felipe for undisclosed fees, and goalkeeper Keylor Navas on loan.

Shelvey, 30, has made only three Premier League appearances for Newcastle this season and his contract was due to expire in the summer.

He has joined Forest on a two-and-a-half-year contract, while two-cap Brazil international Felipe, 33, has signed until June 2024 from Atletico Madrid.

Costa Rica keeper Navas, 36, has made a temporary move from Paris St-Germain to provide cover for the rest of the season after Dean Henderson sustained a thigh injury.

  3. 'Spurs have tried several times to get it correct down that right-hand side'published at 08:19 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Spurs will be delighted with what they have down that right-hand side. They've tried several times to get that correct, so it's a positive.

It's somebody in that dressing room that is hopefully going to give them that consistency, especially when the manager demands so much of the squad.

It's a strange recruitment process with the director of football Fabio Paratici, Daniel Levy and then Antonio Conte all involved. They have been looking for some time and some of their targets have come and gone.

  4. Pedro Porro joins Spurs from Sporting Lisbonpublished at 08:14 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham signed full-back Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon on loan until the end of the season, with an obligation to buy for 45m euros (£40m).

The 23-year-old Spain international joined Sporting in August 2020 on a two-year loan deal, which became permanent last summer.

He was previously at Manchester City, but did not play for the first team.

Porro's arrival coincides with Spurs ending the contract of Matt Doherty, who has joined Atletico Madrid.

Fellow defender Djed Spence has also left Spurs, signing for French side Rennes on loan for the rest of the season.

  5. Everything has happened so fast - Jorginhopublished at 08:11 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta: "Jorginho is a midfield player who has intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience.

"He has won in his career, but still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here. We are so pleased to sign Jorginho and welcome him and his family to the club."

Jorginho said he was a "bit surprised" at the move, which he called an "amazing challenge", and he added that Arteta was a "big influence" in his decision to join the Gunners

He said: "I know he tried a few times to get me before and it didn't happen due to other reasons, not because of my wishes. I just can't wait to be on the pitch to be honest. Everything has happened so fast.

"It's an important shirt. It's an amazing club, a big one, and I'm really excited and happy to be here. I'll try to just bring positive energy, hard work and my experience to help the team. It's what I always bring with me."

  6. Jorginho moves from Chelsea to Arsenal in £12m dealpublished at 08:06 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

With Enzo Fernandez incoming, Chelsea agreed to sell Italy midfielder Jorginho to Arsenal in a £12m deal.

The 31-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Napoli in 2018, was in the last six months of his Blues' contract.

He passed a medical on Tuesday and signed an 18-month contract with the option of a further year.

  7. 'You are normally breaking records for centre-forwards'published at 08:03 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's a big gamble. I think it might soften the blow in terms of how they have made the payments.

We've seen Chelsea break records before with certain goalkeepers they have signed as well, where they might have felt that was a lot of money to pay.

This was again a lot of money. You are normally breaking records for centre-forwards. This isn't a centre-forward. He is a sitting midfielder, a guy who made his name from playing just in front of the defence.

  8. Chelsea agree British record £107m fee for Fernandezpublished at 07:59 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

Chelsea have agreed a British record 121m euro (£107m) deal for Benfica's Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

The deal eclipses the £100m Manchester City paid for Jack Grealish in 2021.

Benfica said in a statement it had "reached an agreement with Chelsea FC for the sale of all the rights of the player Enzo Fernandez".

Fernandez, 22, who only joined Benfica for a reported £10m in August, was named young player of the tournament during Argentina's World Cup triumph in Qatar.

  9. 'What a window!'published at 07:55 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

What a window! It’s been incredible. There’s a lot of players signed in this window in their early 20s. Enzo Fernandez is another one.

If you look at the stats, he’s barely played 10 games [for Argentina] so it is a long-term thing – everything about Chelsea now is long term. They are long-term contracts.

But there was a worry when Roman Abramovich left ‘was that the end of the money?’ Well it certainly hasn’t been.

  10. Deadline-day recappublished at 07:52 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2023

There'll be more reaction to Newcastle's EFL Cup win over Southampton shortly.

But now it's time for a recap of the late news from deadline day, as the transfer window shut after some record spending in January.

    Newcastle 2-1 Southampton (Agg: 3-1)

    Phil McNulty

Newcastle United's upward direction of travel since Eddie Howe's arrival on Tyneside is moving at such a pace that the Toon Army can now add Wembley to their list of destinations as they shoot for a place in next season's Champions League.

This being Newcastle, what looked like being a stroll against Southampton in their EFL Cup semi-final came accompanied with some second-half nerves before the sound of Paul Tierney's final whistle was drowned out by the deafening roars echoing around Tyneside.

In reality, Newcastle United were never in serious danger of squandering a place in their first Wembley final since the 1999 FA Cup once two early goals from Sean Longstaff gave them an even greater hold on this EFL Cup semi-final after winning the first leg at St Mary's.

First Wembley final since 1999. First League Cup final since 1976. A chance to win their first trophy since Ujpest Dozsa were beaten in the 1969 Inter Cities' Fairs Cup Final.

Heady times indeed for Newcastle United and their transformational manager Eddie Howe, supported by transformational funds supplied by Saudi Arabian owners.

Wembley looked very different the last time Newcastle reached a cup final, losing 2-0 to Manchester United in 1999 as the Red Devils bagged the FA Cup en route to a historic treble that season.

Now they know they'll definitely be at Wembley on 26 February - for the first time since reaching the FA Cup final in 1999.

Sean Longstaff sent his fellow Geordies into dreamland with an early double at St James' Park, although a fine long-range strike by Che Adams and a late red card for Bruno Guimaraes meant it wasn't all plain sailing.

Newcastle United reached their first cup final since 1999 by overcoming Southampton in the EFL Cup at an ecstatic St James' Park.

Eddie Howe's resurgent side will face either Manchester United or Nottingham Forest at Wembley as the Magpies attempt to win their first major trophy since the Inter Cities' Fairs Cup in 1969.

Newcastle, who last played in a Wembley showpiece when they were beaten by Manchester United in the 1999 FA Cup final, had a 1-0 advantage from this semi-final first leg, and Sean Longstaff settled any nerves among an expectant Toon Army with two early goals.
