West Brom's defeats in each of their last two away league games account for one more than they lost on the road in Carlos Corberan’s first five in charge.

They last had a longer run of defeats away from home between December 2021 and February 2022, with three defeats under Valerien Ismael and three under Steve Bruce.

The visitors also have a fairly miserable recent record against Watford, winning this league fixture on only one of their last eight attempts while losing three and drawing four.

It probably speaks of how sweet a victory would be for them tonight that the last time they did so was under a manager who has now retired: Tony Pulis oversaw a 3-1 triumph in December 2016.

Slaven Bilic needs no introduction to West Brom fans, having led them to promotion to the Premier League in second place during his sole full season in charge in 2019-20.

"The work he did here was amazing," Baggies head coach Carlos Corberan told BBC WM before this match. "He did something that is very difficult to achieve, so I have full respect for him."

Corberan took the opportunity to demonstrate his intensity when he was asked whether that will provide him and his players with extra oomph tonight.

"Every game gives the most motivation for me," he said. "I always find reasons to play every game like the most important game of my life."

They’ve got to have two good performances and if they can get something from this evening, they’ll take confidence into the next one.

If they lose this evening, the confidence will be shot a little bit and you won’t have the buzz in the dressing room.

It’s getting so tight now [around the play-off places].

  7. Team news - Watford bring in Morris, Baggies unchangedpublished at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2023

Watford v West Brom (20:00 GMT)

Watford make one change from their 1-1 draw at leaders Burnley six days ago, starting 21-year-old defender James Morris in place of Hassane Kamara.

Boss Bilic said that left-back Kamara, who is on loan from Udinese, played “half-injured” at Burnley and will now be out for around two weeks.

“We know he will come in and do a job for us,” Bilic added of Morris.

Midfielder Tom Cleverley is out with an injury he sustained during the warm-up at Turf Moor, while former Aston Villa, Cardiff and Reading right-back or midfielder Leandro Bacuna returns on the bench.

Watford starting XI: Bachmann, Gaspar, Porteous, Hoedt, Morris, Kone, Choudhury, Sema, Sarr, Davis, Joao Pedro.

Subs: Louza, Araujo, Hamer, Kabasele, Assombalonga, Martins, Bacuna.

West Brom do not make any amendments to the starting side who drew 1-1 at home to Blackburn on Wednesday.

Brandon Thomas-Asante is their top scorer this season with five, while John Swift has the most assists (6) and Jed Wallace has had a shot-happy 23 attempts on target, as well as 20 inaccurate efforts.

West Brom starting XI: Griffiths, Furlong, O'Shea, Pieters, Townsend, Chalobah, Yokuslu, Albrighton, J Wallace, Thomas-Asante, Swift.

Subs: Button, Ajayi, Diangana, Dike, Molumby, Grant, Reach.

  8. Championship - how things standpublished at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2023

Watford v West Brom (20:00 GMT)

    Championship table graphicImage source, .

Here's how the Championship chase looks. Burnley are colossal frontrunners following their 1-0 win at Luton on Saturday, while it would take some collapse or push from the chasing pack to catch Sheffield United and Middlesbrough in the race for second.

The foci of our attention tonight are two of nine teams behind Boro to have collected between 45 and 50 points.

A first win in six - four of their last five games have been draws - would be the third for Watford in their last five home matches against West Brom, none of which they have lost.

Albion also aren't in convincing form, winning one and losing three of their last five games in all competitions. They were only held to a 1-1 draw against Blackburn last time out because of Ben Brereton Diaz's 89th-minute equaliser, though.

Good evening and welcome to the first EFL live text of the week - and a potentially crucial game between two sides with play-off aspirations.

For Watford, the incentive is simple this evening: a win would take them into the top six.

Three points will see the Hornets fly above Blackburn, Millwall and Sunderland into fifth. They could even overtake Luton in fourth if they beat visitors West Brom by more than three goals.

The visiting Baggies, meanwhile, will usurp Watford in eighth if they win and rise above ninth-placed Norwich in the process. A draw would move them to within three points of those coveted Championship lottery spots.

Ready? Let's see which of these teams has a marvellous Monday.
