Pep probably should have left Rodri on at least, but on the other hand the guys who don't start have to play at some point and ought really to be able to see out a 3-0 at home

Erling Haaland scored twice as Premier League champions Manchester City maintained their winning streak with a dominant victory over relegation-threatened Leicester City.

The hosts cut the gap to league leaders Arsenal to just three points, but Mikel Arteta's men can re-establish their advantage when they face West Ham on Sunday.

It was a thoroughly comfortable day for Pep Guardiola's men, who scored twice in the first 13 minutes through John Stones' thumping effort and Haaland's penalty.

The 22-year-old Norwegian goal machine added his second with a delightfully dinked finish 12 minutes later, but could not add to his tally after being substituted at half-time.

Goalkeeper Daniel Iversen made a superb flying stop to deny Riyad Mahrez's curling strike, the closest the hosts came to a fourth in the second half.

Meanwhile, Dean Smith suffered a nightmare start in his first game in charge of Leicester, although Kelechi Iheanacho grabbed a 75th minute consolation and also hit the post against his old club.

The Foxes remain deep in trouble at the wrong end of the table, sitting in 19th position and two points off safety.

  6. 'We had to suffer but I saw enough'published at 20:09 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    FT: Man City 3-1 Leicester

    Leicester City

Leicester manager Dean Smith speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Well you can't come here and give them a two-goal lead after 10 minutes and expect to come out with points. We had a game plan. We wanted to stay in the game. There are isolated moments like when John Stones sticks it in the top corner from a bouncing ball. Is the penalty harsh? No, I'd have expected it myself.

"We had to suffer, but I saw enough from the players and damage limitation to go in at 3-0. We got a goal and earned some big moments when it would be interesting if it went at 3-2. It was never going to define us, this game, and other teams have lost by more than two here."

Enough to avoid the drop: "I've seen that in training. It was important or me to see a few players. It was good to see their character when they are suffering. I saw enough character and commitment from my players to put wrongs right. There is optimism to work towards now."

On implementing his ideas: "Yes, but that's what they're waiting for. They're used to playing a certain way and you have to put some fundamentals in, and their very receptive. they're a good group."

On being back in management: "I was having a nice break and watch the Masters last week but it's nice to be back in it. I believe we have the players and more importantly Craig and JT [John Terry] believe we have the players that can get us out of this."

  7. 'We have to find the positives'published at 20:07 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    FT: Man City 3-1 Leicester

    Leicester City

Leicester centre-back Harry Souttar to Sky Sports: "It was a really disappointing start to the game. To be three goals down so soon wasn't what we expected. We looked a good team in spells in the second half but you cant come hear and concede three and expect to get anything from the game."

On the second-half reaction: "We got into half-time at 3-0 down and last time we were 4-0 down and got it back to 4-3. We had previous here and tried to use that but we couldn't do it in the end."

On looking ahead: "It's all you can do. You have to find positives in the performance We are disappointed in the nature of the goals and we will look at them but we've got to stick together and be together. The fans were still cheering us. If we stick together we will be fine."

New manager, new energy? "The old manager brought me in on the last day of the window. I can't thank him enough for bringing me to the club. I think the tempo has gone up in training, like it does at any club when there's a new manager."

On the relegation battle: "We are all together and here we go. We've got to focus on ourselves. We've got to put the points on the table. We know where we are and we don't want to be in this position but we know what we have to do."

  9. 'When you make a lot of subs the standards drop'published at 20:03 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    FT: Man City 3-1 Leicester

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to Sky Sports: "Yeah it was a really good game after the Champions League as well, against a team that is fighting in a difficult position for them. In the end when you make a lot of substitutions you drop a little bit. [We got the] three points and onto the next one.

"It was completely different because the guys that start the second half it was the same approach as the beginning. I have a little bit of experience to play in three days in the important stages and you make a lot of substitutions and some dynamics we have and some players don't. And when the game was under control we made the changes."

On De Bruyne's assist landmark: "It is a lot. We spoke last game against Southampton that he achieved the 100 assists so it's a lot. It's incredible."

Worried after Leicester's goal? "Of course we were worried, so we made one mistake and the second they had the chance with James Maddison and after with Kelechi Iheanacho. The game was tricky in the last 20 minutes. But the first 55, 60 minutes was good."

Tactical substitutions? "I had to avoid [injuries]. I always have to push ourselves better and avoid it. Normally when you make changes it happens."

Important result to chase down Arsenal? "Absolutely."

  11. 'The game is never done until it's done'published at 19:57 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    FT: Man City 3-1 Leicester

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to BBC MOTD: "At the end [it was uncomfortable]. That normally happens when you make a lot of substitutions. We should avoid it.

"But sometimes it happens and it is important we started really well after the Champions League. We made subs to make players rest but we lost some control, though in general it was a deserved victory.

"We start the game to win the game. The game is never done until it's done. But after 3-0, and especially with the control and Erling Haaland played all 90 minutes against Bayern Munich and it was so difficult, we have to think about injuries.

"We are lucky after the Bayern Munich game we play at home not away. You saw how focused we were."

On Bayern Munich next: "Absolutely, we know that [it's never over until it's over].

"We have to try our game and think we will win the game. We have to defend otherwise they have the rhythm. It's a real tough opponent. We go there to achieve something unique, to reach a semi-final.

"We have to play with the right mentality and be stable in the bad moments and go for it."

  14. 'Our season won't be defined here'published at 19:50 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    FT: Man City 3-1 Leicester

    Leicester City

Leicester manager Dean Smith to Sky Sports: "I thought our second-half performance was better. There was a bit of us being a little bit more committed and a bit of them putting the brakes on as well. But I was pleased with it and I thought we created some big moments and some big chances in the second half.

"You do [fear the worst] when you give them a lead of 1-0 after 10 minutes and 3-0 after 20 minutes. But if you look at the goals in isolation, John Stones has put one in from 20 yards with his left foot into the top corner, then a handball [for the penalty] and I'm not sure where he had to put his hand. All of a sudden we're 2-0 down.

"Yes you're fearful but I thought the lads certainly showed a lot of character in the second half.

"I've seen teams come and have a go at Manchester City and get beat 3-0 like Bayern Munich did. What we needed to do was stay in the game. We had those incidents that led to goals.

"I thought our defence was aggressive in the second-half, we put a lot more pressure on them.

"There's lots we can take. I'm obviously disappointed but a two-goal deficit to the best team in the world isn't the end of the world.

"Our season won't be defined here, we have a run of games where we have to win matches.

"I'm not setting any points targets, we just have to win each game. There's games coming up which are winnable, this season won't be defined by Manchester City."

  17. 'We let our standards slip late on'published at 19:40 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    FT: Man City 3-1 Leicester

    Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think we are very happy with three more points. Three more points closer to Arsenal and we arre chasing them.

"First half we played really well and second half our standards sipped a little Towards the end there were a few mistakes and we had a couple of substitutions. I had a bit of a stinker to be honest, as Ederson saved it onto me and that resulted in their goal. Overall we are happy with the first 60 minutes or so."

On getting the chance to play: "I come to this club to play football and I want to be involved but when you've got a player like Rodri in front of you it's very difficult. I always want to learn and grow.

"This squad is unbelievable. The whole club is unbelievable. The way we push each other forward and how confident we are. Other than with Leeds pushing to get out of the Championship I haven't been in a squad as together. We are confident and looking forward to each game as they come."

Is the Leicester goal a warning for the Champions League second leg in Munich? "We always say we never take things for granted and we did let our standards slip but like I said we are happy with the first 60 minutes and we are looking ahead to Bayern Munich and the rest of the Premier League too."

Manchester City have won each of their last 10 games in all competitions.

Leicester have won just two of their last 16 Premier League games (D2, L12), losing eight of their last nine.

Only Alan Shearer (34 in 1994-95) and Andrew Cole (34 in 1993-94) have scored more goals in a single Premier League campaign than the 32 Erling Haaland has scored for Manchester City this term.

Kevin De Bruyne became just the second player in Premier League history to provide 100+ assists for one club after Ryan Giggs for Manchester United (162).

He has provided 10 assists for Haaland in all competitions this season.

The most goals scored in Europe's top five leagues this season and most assists have come from Haaland and De Bruyne respectively.
