  1. Sunderland play-off dream alivepublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 29 April 2023

It's been six seasons since Sunderland were last in the Premier League but they can now sniff a route back to the big time.

They start the day just a point outside the play-offs with two games remaining.

So what an afternoon coming up in the final game of the season at the Stadium of Light where victory over Watford could move them into the top six.

But the Black Cats home form has been slippery with only seven wins from 22 games.

Any lingering hopes Watford had of a play-off push have gone up in smoke with back-to-back defeats and you have to go back to 2 January for their last away win.

Younger EFL followers may not know that Coventry were once firmly established in the top flight, spending 33 years there before relegation from the Premier League in 2001-02.

The following 22 years have seen plenty of ups and downs for Sky Blues fans, who could be heading to Wembley next month.

Win today and Mark Robins' men will regain fifth position before finishing the campaign at MIddlesbrough.

The hosts are five unbeaten and have been beaten just once in their past 15 outings, while 17th-placed visitors Birmingham have lost two of their past three.

Can Shaun Maloney pull off a stunning escape from relegation with Wigan?

Turning out attentions back to the Championship, and the big game today is the basement battle between 22nd-placed Reading and rock bottom Wigan.

A combination of a six-point deduction and an 11-match winless run have left Reading a point from safety.

The sacking of boss Paul Ince has not sparked an upturn in form, with two draws and a win since Noel Hunt was placed in interim charge.

Wigan looked doomed following one win in 12 - and their own three-point deduction - but back-to-back wins have given the Latics hope of survival.

They must win in Berkshire and then hope other results go their way to remain in with a chance of staying up on the final day.

Boss Shaun Maloney says if the club pull off the great escape then it will rival the achievement of the Wigan side which beat the drop from the Premier League in 2011-12.

    League One preview

The bottom six in League One as it standsImage source, Rex Features

Here's the lay of the land at the bottom of League One as things stand going into today's games.

Cambridge, in 23rd, can't quite be relegated today by virtue of their game in hand however they can finish the day below Morecambe or Accrington who can be relegated.

Accrington can go down today if they lose to Cambridge and Oxford draw or win at already-relegated Forest Green and MK Dons beat Barnsley.

Morecambe's situation is a little more complicated. They can be relegated today in several ways.

They will return to League Two IF:

    • If they lose to Lincoln and Oxford avoid defeat versus Forest Green and MK Dons win
    • If they lose and MK Dons win and Accrington beat Cambridge.
    • If they draw and Oxford & MK Dons both win.
    • If they draw and MK Dons win and Accrington win and Oxford draw.

Finally, Accrington and Morecambe have much worse goal difference than MK Dons and Oxford, so if both teams fail to win today and other results go their way, they could be as good as relegated headed into the final game of the season.

Win today and Derby County could confirm their League One play-off place if results also go their way.

On the eve of the anniversary of his third-tier promotion success with former club Rotherham, Paul Warne is hoping his Rams side takes another important step towards ensuring they have a chance of making an immediate Championship return.

A five-game unbeaten run, which includes three wins, has elevated the County back into the top six and play-off contention.

The visit of eighth-place Portsmouth, whose hopes of reaching the play-offs are already over, has Warne in a reflective mood in his programme notes.

The 49-year-old writes of the club “coming a long way in a short space of time”, having been relegated 12 months earlier amid financial turmoil that put the Rams’ very future in doubt.

A reminder how much of a turnaround there’s been at Ipswich Town lately.

A picture I took at Ipswich train station on 13 April 2019 of the local paper headline board on the day Ipswich ended a 62-year run in top two tiers.

It was a different story today as I walked through the station - a sea of blue shirts and happy faces.

By half past one a fair crowd had already gathered outside Portman Road and there was a party atmosphere.

There were flares and numerous choruses of 'Allez, Allez, Allez' from the Ipswich Town fans. Win and the Tractor Boys know they will be back in the Championship next season.

It's a beautiful afternoon in Devon, but will it be Plymouth Argyle's moment in the sun?

There is an expectant atmosphere here at Home Park with promotion tantalisingly close for the Pilgrims.

It comes a decade and a day after the club escaped relegation to the National League on the final day of the season season amid financial problems.

But today the job seems simple - a win and they're up, but a Sheffield Wednesday draw or loss would also send Argyle back to the second tier for the first time since 2010.

They could also be crowned champions today, should fierce rivals Exeter City get an unlikely win at second-placed Ipswich Town.

  8. How can the top of League One be decided?published at 14:41 British Summer Time 29 April 2023

The race for automatic promotion in League One is almost done, but leaders Plymouth and second-placed Ipswich aren't quite there just yet.

Argyle will ensure their return to the Championship if they beat Burton today but they can also go up without victory against the Brewers.

Should third-placed Sheffield Wednesday fail to beat Shrewsbury Town, the Pilgrims will also be promoted.

Ipswich will return to the second tier if they match the Owls' result at the New Meadow, meaning if they beat Exeter, if they draw but Wednesday fail to win or finally if they lose to Exeter and Sheffield Wednesday also lose, they will be promoted.

Plymouth can only clinch the League One title if they win and Ipswich lose, however.

Hartlepool must win and hope that Crawley lose at home to Walsall to stay alive in League Two.

Hartlepool manager John Askey makes three team changes, perhaps surprisingly putting leading scorer Josh Umerah on the bench.

A big day ahead for Northampton, who can seal their return to League One with a win today.

Last season they missed out on automatic promotion on the last day and then went onto lose in the play-off final.

A sold-out Sixfields would want to see them out that right.

Bradford City can still grab an automatic spot. A win today alongside a few results today and in the last day going in their favour would do it for Mark Hughes team. Play-offs more likely for the visitors.

The stadium starting to fill up nicely.

  11. Cobblers and Stevenage going up?published at 14:37 British Summer Time 29 April 2023

Northampton Town suffered the agony to end all agonies last year when Bristol Rovers somehow managed to score seven on the final day to tip the Cobblers back into the play-offs.

But today things are all in their own hands as they sit second in League One, five points ahead of Stockport in fourth.

Victory at home to Bradford will seal their return to League One.

And even if they slip up, they will be promoted if Stockport fail to win at champions Leyton Orient.

Third-placed Stevenage can also be promoted today if they win at home Grimsby.

They will also seal a top three spot if Stockport fail to win.

  12. Hartlepool hang by a threadpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 29 April 2023

Second League Two relegation slot to be decided

Today could be the day that Hartlepool are relegated back to the National League after two seasons.

They sit second-bottom of League Two, six points behind Crawley with just two games remaining and have an inferior goal difference of six.

They host Barrow and simply must win to stay alive.

But only if Crawley are also beaten at home by Walsall will the relegation fight go to the final day of the season.

  13. Play-off race becoming clearerpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 29 April 2023

    Two berths up for grabs

Millwall got ahead of the rest of the play-off pack with victory at Blackpool last night.

Coventry will be looking to regain fifth spot when they host Birmingham, while Sunderland entertain mid-table Watford.

A seven-match winless run has seen Blackburn slide out of contention, and Rovers aren't in action until Monday when they face Luton.

One of West Brom and Norwich is likely to see their top-six hopes ended later when they meet at 17:30 BST.

We'll revisit the Championship later, but there is plenty at stake in League One and League Two this afternoon...

    Tangerines relegated to League One

Blackpool's relegation was confirmed last night as the Tangerines suffered a 3-2 home defeat by Millwall.

The Seasiders are down with a game remaining because 22nd-placed Reading play Huddersfield, who lie 21st, on the final day of the campaign.

Wigan must beat Reading today to have a chance of staying up, but that might not be enough if Rotherham avoid defeat and Huddersfield win at Cardiff tomorrow.
