    FT: West Brom 2-1 Norwich

You know what? After a day of permutations, ups and downs changing by the minute, I think I need a rest.

Mentally taxing though this part of the season is, we wouldn't have it any other way, would we?

Cardiff take on Huddersfield tomorrow as a 10-day spell of Championship fixtures continues.

For now though, I'm off to sit in a dark room for a few hours..

    Thank you for joining us.

There were plenty of ups and downs across the English Football League today.

In the Championship Wigan's relegation to League One was confirmed as they conceded an injury time equaliser to fellow strugglers Reading.

In League One there was joy for Plymouth and Ipswich as they wrapped up the two automatic promotion places and ensured they will play Championship football next season.

There was a reprieve for Accrington and Morecambe at the bottom of League One as they both made sure they took their fight for survival to the final day, albeit Stanley are effectively down already on goal difference.

Meanwhile in League Two, Stevenage confirmed their automatic promotion after beating Grimsby but Northampton's bid to go up suffered a blow as they were defeated at home by Bradford, with Stockport beating champions Leyton Orient to take the fight for third to the final day of the season.

At the bottom, Hartlepool won but were relegated to the National League after Crawley drew with Walsall.

    FT: West Brom 2-1 Norwich

Here's how the top of the Championship looks after today's fixtures.

Sunderland's hopes of a top six spot suffered a blow as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Watford.

Meanwhile, West Brom stay within touching distance of the play-offs having beaten Norwich tonight.

The Canaries' hopes of reaching the play-offs already looked remote before kick-off this evening but their defeat means their top six aspirations are over.

They've been the better side tonight and they take all three points against a Norwich side who looked off the pace for much of the 90 minutes.

The Baggies' play-off push continues. They're now eighth and two points off the top six.

The Canaries' bid for a top six spot comes to an end as they sit in 12th.

  10. Manager mistakes cost Pools dearpublished at 19:11 British Summer Time 29 April 2023

    Hartlepool relegated from League Two

    Matt Newsum
    BBC Sport

Relegation comes just two seasons after a resurgent Hartlepool returned to the English Football League after four years away, although the cracks appeared just months after promotion was assured.

Manager Dave Challinor, the architect of their promotion campaign culminating in play-off final victory over Torquay, was lured down a division to join Stockport.

At that stage they were 10th in League Two, and although Graeme Lee took them to the fourth round of the FA Cup and led the team on an eight-game unbeaten run between January and February 2022, they finished the season without a win in nine to end up 17th.

Lee was dispensed with before the season was out - getting the next appointment right was going to be crucial for Pools and, as it turned out, they got it completely wrong.

Former Hearts and Celtic midfielder Paul Hartley came in, but his stewardship only yielded one win in the Papa Johns Trophy and he was replaced by Keith Curle by mid-September.

Curle's bottom-tier experience at Notts County, Northampton and Carlisle let to little change in fortunes and with just six wins on the board, and former York boss John Askey was brought in to replace him in late February.

While he gave Pools hope with an eight-game unbeaten run between February and April, only two of those were wins.

The first defeat of his reign at Newport was followed by a damaging loss to Salford, and a 2-0 reverse in a six-pointer with Crawley was enough to all but condemn Pools to the drop.

The turnover of players brought a lack of continuity, with 22 signings and 10 loanees added to the squad between June 2022 and February 2023.

While there were some bright sparks, such Josh Umerah's form following a move from Wealdstone, Pools lacked goals throughout the team and conceded more than anyone else at the other end.

It was a recipe for relegation, despite Askey's best efforts, and will see Pools again battling to return to the EFL next season.

Owner and chairman Raj Singh has put Pools up for sale but says he will maintain his support during the process, and also said Askey - who is set to stay - will have a bigger budget than the one Challinor had back in 2020-21.

Just three seasons ago Stevenage only avoided relegation out of the English Football League because of Bury's expulsion and financial problems at Macclesfield - giving them a reprieve despite finishing second-bottom.

The Boro found themselves in another relegation battle last season, until Steve Evans replaced Paul Tisdale in mid-March and steered them away from the drop zone.

That was just the start of the Evans revolution at the Lamex Stadium.

The former Gillingham, Mansfield and Leeds boss splits opinion but Stevenage were clearly the perfect fit for the Scot, with the Hertfordshire club spending the whole of this season in the automatic promotion race.

Boro have won more home points - 53 - than anyone else in the division, with Evans' side also the highest home scorers in the division, with 40.

They also reached the FA Cup fourth round this season, thanks to a memorable win at Premier League side Aston Villa and - despite a dicey February - Stevenage managed to get back on track and over the line.

It means the club will line up in League One for the first time in 10 seasons, with Evans deservedly being showered with plaudits.

Promotion back to the Championship ends a four-season stay in League One, having previously spent 62 consecutive years inside English football's top two tiers before their relegation under Paul Lambert in 2018-19.

The Tractor Boys missed out on play-off spots at the first three attempts, with Lambert and his successor Paul Cook unable to guide the Suffolk club into the top six.

But the appointment of McKenna in December 2021, in what is his first full-time managerial role, has proved to be one of the catalysts of their success.

Ipswich lost only four of their final 24 league games last season under former Manchester United coach McKenna, and have lost only four more of their 45 this term - the fewest number of defeats in the division.

They have also been by far the highest goalscorers in the third tier with 99.

Only Lincoln City have won at Portman Road in League One in 2022-23, and Ipswich hit top form just at the right time - a run of 13 wins from the past 14 matches before Saturday clinching a top-two berth at the end of a closely-fought and high-quality battle for automatic promotion.

    Plymouth promoted from League One

Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher celebrates promotionImage source, PA Media

A decade ago the Plymouth Argyle avoided relegation to the National League by a single point thanks to other sides’ results on the final day of the season.

Back then they were coming out of a damaging administration that almost killed the club.

Businessman James Brent brought the Pilgrims out of the mire and subsequently sold the club to lifelong fan and multi-millionaire Simon Hallett – and they have enjoyed an upward trajectory ever since.

Having brought in Ryan Lowe as manager and Steven Schumacher as his assistant, the duo led Argyle to promotion in the Covid-19 affected 2019-20 season.

They have progressed steadily ever since, with Schumacher taking over in the autumn of 2021 after Lowe left for Preston North End.

This term the Pilgrims have excelled despite having a budget much lower than many sides around them.

Schumacher’s side have used a wonderful home record to build the foundations for a title challenge that has seen them play attractive passing football with wing-backs, and often two number 10’s behind a lone striker.

With plans in place to improve the off-field infrastructure, Argyle fans will hope they can stay in a Championship that has changed a lot since the Pilgrims were last in the second tier 13 years ago.
