Chelsea put their League Cup final defeat behind them to beat Brighton and move one point behind Women's Super League leaders Manchester United.

Blues boss Emma Hayes got the response she demanded as Chelsea moved up to second in the WSL before Sunday's home game against United.

Managerless Brighton fell behind to Guro Reiten's penalty before Jess Carter doubled the hosts' lead.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd added a third before Danielle Carter's consolation.

The Blues dominated despite making seven changes to the side who were beaten by Arsenal at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

Sweden winger Kaneryd had an early attempt cleared off the line when the game was goalless, Jelena Cankovic clipped the bar and Sam Kerr had an attempt ruled out for offside.

Brighton, who announced manager Jens Scheuer's departure on Monday by mutual consent after only two months in charge, hit the bar after half-time through Elisabeth Terland.

They remain 11th in the table, two points above bottom club Leicester City.

Chelsea's manager Emma Hayes, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a great response. I was really pleased with the team. They are a wonderful group of women. They responded in the way that we all wanted them to.

"They are upset about conceding a sloppy goal late on. I have to accept that after making defensive changes but we needed to make changes as we have a massive game at the weekend."

On the game against Manchester United on Sunday: "We know it will be a sell-out here on Sunday. It'll be a great game. We have a plan for them but I'm not going to talk about that on TV!"

England captain Leah Williamson has welcomed a substantial government package which will seek to create equal school sport opportunities for girls.

Schools in England will be required to offer equal access to sports, including football, and deliver a minimum of two hours of physical education per week.

More than £600m of funding is to be delivered over two academic years.

It comes after the 23 members of England's Euro 2022-winning squad wrote an open letter to the government.

Williamson said the Lionesses wanted "to open the doors" for young girls as part of their legacy following last summer's success, beginning with changes in school sport.

"The success of the summer has inspired so many young girls to pursue their passion for football," said Williamson, who identified team-mate Lotte Wubben-Moy as a key driving force.

"We see it as our responsibility to open the doors for them to do so and this announcement makes that possible. This is the legacy that we want to live much longer than us as a team."

Wubben-Moy said: "By making football more accessible to millions of girls across the nation, we have opened a crucial door for the growth of women's football and women's sport as a whole. I am proud to be part of something that will live on for generations to come."

We have seen better performances from Chelsea. Can we expect more from them? Yes, I think so. Brighton did well to get their goal but they never really caused Chelsea issues. The back line were rarely tested.

It was a great game to bounce back. Emma Hayes should have a few more positive things to say than she did at the weekend.

I think it's close at the bottom. I don't want to see any of them going down but, if Brighton continue in the way they are going, they are going to struggle.
