Against Southampton in the last round was the first time the Mariners played a game with video assistant referees (VAR) and chairman Jason Stockwood joked he had initially been reluctant to pay for it.

"We had a note from the Football Association yesterday saying we needed to pay £10,000 for the VAR. I said if we're going to do that then I'd rather we put it in an envelope and give it to the referee!" he said a fortnight ago.

"I said to the lads from Southampton afterwards I don't know how they live with it week-in, week-out but when it goes your way… absolutely amazing."

Brighton will provide as tough a test as any of their higher-profile Premier League counterparts said Grimsby Town boss Paul Hurst last week.

About 5,000 fans are expected to follow the League Two side to the south coast, to take on a side 76 places above them.

Albion, in seventh, have lost just one of their past 12 games.

"They might not have the worldwide name of a Man United, Liverpool or Man City," Hurst told BBC Radio Humberside.

"But in terms of how they're playing, they're a fantastic team and when [Pep - Manchester City boss] Guardiola mentions the style of play and manager, you know it's something to behold."

Brighton are only one step away from reaching Wembley as they take on League Two Grimsby Town in their FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday, but boss Roberto De Zerbi has warned his players not to let "arrogance" get the better of them.

Speaking about the upcoming game, the Italian, who has a touchline ban today, said: "I believe in my players. They know it will be a difficult game.

"We can't think as if we are Premier League and they are fourth division or we will make a big mistake.

"Football changes but emotions stay the same. We are ready to try to arrive at Wembley.

"We have to play with tempo against Grimsby and no arrogance - but if we play with our level against Leeds, Palace... we have a good chance of winning."

The Seagulls have never won the FA Cup, with their best result being their 1983 final loss to Manchester United.

  5. Sutton's predictions: Brighton v Grimsbypublished at 14:07 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2023

    Brighton v Grimsby (14:15 GMT)

    Chris Sutton, BBC Sport Columnist

For this week's Premier League and FA Cup predictions Chris Sutton faces Black Honey guitarist Chris Ostler.

    Sutton's prediction:5-0

Grimsby have got great memories of their last trip to the south coast and their brilliant win over Southampton in round five, but I don't see another shock happening here.

Unlike Saints, Brighton are going extremely well in the league and the upcoming international break means they don't have to worry about resting players this weekend.

The Seagulls are going to win and I think we might see a few goals, but let's give full credit to Grimsby for getting this far because they have had a great run. I wrote them off before they played Luton in the fourth round, and they proved me wrong.

    Chris Ostler's prediction:3-0

Grimsby's win over Southampton was amazing - you love to see that kind of shock, unless you are on the wrong end of it. But I am a Brighton boy, born and bred, so they are my second team behind Spurs. They are having a great season. Like a lot of people, I thought their results might tail off when Graham Potter went to Chelsea, but Roberto de Zerbi has done amazing and they have gone from strength to strength.

  6. Grimsby's Hurst has 'loads' of dilemmaspublished at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2023

The Mariners reached the last eight of the world's oldest domestic football cup competition by winning at Southampton, another Premier League outfit in that part of the world - and also dumped out Plymouth, Cambridge, Burton and Luton en route.

Manager Paul Hurst's mind has also been preoccupied by maintaining their fourth-tier status, helped by a midweek win at Sutton United, while also looking toward this weekend's tie.

The 48-year-old says the video work has been "ominous to watch", given the "loads" of dilemmas that Premier League teams have struggled to cope with.

All he is focused on now is fine-tuning his team selection and making sure the side give it their all.

"We'll need luck, and I'm not ashamed to say that in the slightest," Hurst added. "We are going to need discipline and lots of energy, but ultimately we know the size of the task.

"That's going to be extremely difficult. But while it's 0-0 and there are two teams out there, you've got to give it your best shot.

"Whatever happens on Sunday, there will be no disgrace. The players should be very proud, the club and supporters; but at the same time there's that bit where you just want to do well and give a good account of yourselves. We've got nothing to lose."

Albion's long climb from near-extinction and a nomadic existence, to an outfit of genuine Premier League quality has changed expectations and given fans an opportunity to experience moments they might never have thought possible in the late nineties.

The Seagulls have not been to an FA Cup final in 40 years, and marking the anniversary of the two Manchester United matches with another appearance in the showpiece would be apt.

It is an opportunity not to be missed for boss Roberto de Zerbi, who would take the club to only their second semi-final in the cup since 1983 if they beat Grimsby.

"I want our people and fans to support our players, because Sunday is a difficult game," De Zerbi told the press.

"We cannot go there and think 'We are Brighton in the Premier League and Grimsby are in the fourth division' - because we will make a big, big mistake.

"We have to play seriously, because for us it's a big opportunity to go to Wembley and we have to think about this before the game."

Paul: Blackburn have done what Chelsea did yesterday. Made subs that weren’t really necessary, lost any rhythm they had then conceded not long after - Blackburn 2 subs at 80 mins and concede in 81st, Chelsea subs in 86+87th minute then concede in 89th.
