  3. Coach Mancini bemoans lack of Italy talent in Serie Apublished at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Italy v England (Thu, 19:45 GMT)

    Italy

Italy manager Roberto Mancini has bemoaned the shortage of players for him to select for the national side playing in Serie A.

Mancini believes a lack of children playing football in the streets is one of the reasons for the shortage of players coming through.

England boss Gareth Southgate has similarly spoken of a decreasing number of English Premier League players, but Mancini said "we are worse off than Southgate".

Three Serie A sides have reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in almost two decades but Mancini said that did not extend to improving the national team.

"I don't know why there are so few strikers, we are very limited going forwards," he said.

"We have three teams in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, but out of the three teams there are seven or eight Italians at most. This is the reality."

Mancini added: "We used to play for three or four hours on the street and then go to train, today this no longer happens. It is no coincidence that players are still discovered in those countries, such as Uruguay, Argentina or Brazil, where people still play a lot in the streets."

  4. Trio withdraw from England squadpublished at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Italy v England (Thu, 19:45 GMT)

    England

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford, Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount and Newcastle keeper Nick Pope have withdrawn from the England squad for their opening Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Rashford picked up a knock during Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham while Pope suffered an injury in Newcastle's 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest on Friday.

Mount is recovering from a pubic bone injury having not featured for Chelsea since February.

Tottenham keeper Fraser Forster, 35, has been called up to replace Pope but an England statement confirmed that "no further replacements are planned" so 23 players arrived at St. George's Park on Monday.

England travel to Italy on 23 March before hosting Ukraine at Wembley on 26 March.

  5. Who are Northern Ireland's four uncapped call-ups?published at 14:22 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

San Marino v Northern Ireland (Thu, 19:45 GMT)

    Northern Ireland

Call-ups for young, uncapped players became a feature of Ian Baraclough's Northern Ireland reign.

Most likely influenced by being robbed of key senior players such as captain Steven Davis, Stuart Dallas and Corry Evans through injury, it was a theme that was continued when Michael O'Neill announced the first squad of his second NI spell in charge last week.

The mood music from O'Neill upon his reappointment in December seemed to suggest that the experienced players who played for him previously would remain important, but four of his 26-man squad will be looking to win their first cap as the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign kicks off this week with a trip to San Marino followed by Finland's visit to Belfast.

Apart from 19-year-old Everton midfielder Isaac Price, the age profile is slightly higher than most of Baraclough's new call-ups, with Bolton defender Eoin Toal, 24, joining 27-year-old midfielders Sean Goss and Cameron McGeehan as the uncapped quartet.

So, exactly who are these four players? And what might they offer if they get a taste of international action? Click here to find out.

  6. Evans to miss Northern Ireland's opening Euro 2024 qualifierspublished at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

San Marino v Northern Ireland (Thu, 19:45 GMT)

    Northern Ireland

Jonny Evans will miss Northern Ireland's opening Euro 2024 qualifiers against San Marino and Finland.

The Leicester City defender, 35, has withdrawn from the squad with an ongoing hamstring injury.

On Thursday, Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers said the centre-back had suffered a setback on the problem that had hampered Evans since November.

Michael O'Neill's side begin their campaign in San Marino on Thursday and at home to Finland on Sunday.

After being ruled out of action since 8 November, Evans came on as a late substitute in Leicester's 3-1 defeat by Chelsea on 11 March.

He was named in O'Neill's 26-man squad for March's internationals, but the recurrence of the injury means he will be sidelined for the first two Group H qualifiers.

  7. Hennessey follows Davies in withdrawing from Wales squadpublished at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Croatia v Wales (Sat, 19:45 GMT)

    Wales

Ben Davies has withdrawn from the Wales squad for Euro 2024 qualifiers against Croatia and Latvia because of injury.

Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey has also withdrawn from the squad and returns to Nottingham Forest, while Brennan Johnson requires further assessment.

Defender Morgan Fox, goalkeeper Tom King, and forwards Liam Cullen and Mark Harris come into the squad.

Davies was named vice-captain by Robert Page when the Wales squad was announced earlier this month. Fox is uncapped having previously played for the Wales Under-21 side.

Until FA/Refs come down hard on all players (instant yellow cards) constantly surrounding and harassing the ref we will never move forward with cleaning up the so called "beautiful game!" As an ex semi-pro, PE Teacher and ref I am appalled at the disgusting example set by players and managers who are seen by youngsters on a a weekly basis abusing refs, linesmen/women and 4th officials. Well said Chris Sutton.

  10. Why Billy Gilmour's next move is 'massive'published at 14:03 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Scotland v Cyprus (Sat, 14:00 GMT)

    Nick McPheat
    BBC Scotland

Scotland fans will watch with envy when Spanish starlets Pedri and Gavi swagger out on to the Hampden pitch next Tuesday.

The Barcelona duo are the latest products to be lifted off Spain's midfield production line, which continues to churn out world-class talent at a terrific rate.

Most nations, including Scotland, would settle for one every generation. In Billy Gilmour, there was growing belief among the Tartan Army they finally had one of their own.

That notion was cemented by a dazzling display in the Wembley rain against England at Euro 2020. Up against a much-vaunted English trio of Declan Rice, Mason Mount and Kalvin Phillips, Gilmour shone.

Almost two years on from that night - his first international start - the 21-year-old finds himself at another crossroads in his young career, just six months on from a Brighton move that was expected to open the door to much-needed regular game time.

"Everything looked right," former Chelsea and Scotland winger Pat Nevin told BBC Scotland. "It's been a real shame so far. But you have to deal with what you've got in football. If one thing isn't working, you have to move to something else.

"That's what Billy did by moving on from Chelsea. Sadly, he might have to do it again. The next big call he makes is massive."

  11. Scotland give Blackburn defender Hyam first call-uppublished at 13:59 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Scotland v Cyprus (Sat, 14:00 GMT)

    Scotland

Scotland have called up Blackburn Rovers defender Dominic Hyam for the first time as they prepare for Euro 2024 qualifiers against Spain and Cyprus.

Hyam, 27, replaces fellow centre-back Jack Hendry who has been forced to withdraw amid recent injury issues.

Celtic right-back Anthony Ralston has also been drafted into the squad.

Hyam joined Rovers, who sit fifth in the English Championship, in the summer after five years with Coventry City.

Scotland host Cyprus on Saturday and then Spain on Tuesday at Hampden as they aim to qualify for back-to-back European Championships.

  12. New-look Wales 'can make their own history' - Ramseypublished at 13:55 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Croatia v Wales (Sat, 19:45 GMT)

    Gareth Vincent
    BBC Sport Wales

New captain Aaron Ramsey says new-look Wales can "make their own history" as they begin their quest to reach Euro 2024.

A fresh qualifying campaign starts in Croatia on Saturday before Latvia visit Cardiff three days later.

The games mark the start of a new era for Wales, who have lost Joe Allen, Chris Gunter, Jonny Williams and talisman Gareth Bale to retirement since last year's World Cup.

"It's very exciting to be part of this team," said Nice midfielder Ramsey. "There's so much opportunity for us. Although we are a young squad, there's a lot of young players on a high number of caps already.

"The majority of the team has remained intact. We are missing players but there's so much excitement with some of the players that are playing at the highest level at the moment and can definitely make their own history with this team."

Croatia v Wales (Sat, 19:45 GMT)

    Wales

Life without Gareth Bale and Joe Allen begins for Wales on Saturday when they kick off their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign against Croatia.

Record goalscorer Bale has retired from football, while Allen along with Chris Gunter and Jonny Williams have all called time on their Wales careers.

Another stalwart, Ben Davies, is injured, so who would you pick to play in Split?

  14. Former international Gunter joins Wales coaching staffpublished at 13:46 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Croatia v Wales (Sat, 19:45 GMT)

    Wales

Former Wales defender Chris Gunter has joined manager Robert Page's coaching staff for the March internationals.

Gunter, 33, won 109 caps during a 15-year Wales career before announcing his retirement from international football on 9 March.

The full-back became the first male player to win a century of Wales caps for his country in March 2021.

Gunter continues to play at club level for AFC Wimbledon in League Two.

The Football Association of Wales say Gunter's role with the senior team this week is "seen as part of a transition into future coaching work".

I don't buy into blaming Levy for everything. Yes, mistakes made and lots of them, the worst one not giving Poch the funds after the CL final. But was trying to build a billion pound stadium. Fact being Mourinho's tactics were old and outdated and as for Conte, his stubbornness and lack of flexibility is him only proving that he's now getting outdated.
